In this issue, we are proud to introduce our new Charity of the Year for 2026: Cheshire Without Abuse (MyCWA), an organisation that has been a lifeline for people across Cheshire for nearly ve decades. In a powerful letter within these pages, MyCWA’s CEO reects on walking into refuge as a young mum with two frightened children and nothing but a carrier bag, exhausted, unsure what would come next. What she found was not judgement or bureaucracy, but compassion. A cup of tea. A listening ear. Someone saying, “You’re safe now.” That simple, human response remains at the heart of Cheshire Without Abuse’s work today.Every day, their team supports adults and children experiencing domestic abuse, often behind closed doors, often hidden in plain sight. With 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men aected in their lifetimes, this is not someone else’s issue. It touches our schools, workplaces and neighbourhoods. Through refuge spaces, a 24/7 helpline, children’s services and recovery programmes, Cheshire Without Abuse continues to provide life-saving support, powered by community generosity.Alongside this important partnership, our Social Collective feature explores another theme central to wellbeing: resilience. From early years education to lifelong learning and creative practice, research shows that education and cognitive stimulation help build the strength, both mental and emotional, that carries us through life. Learning, connection and community are not luxuries; they are protective forces.Across these pages, you’ll nd stories of courage, creativity and care. Whether it’s supporting someone in crisis, staying mentally active as we age, or coming together through shared experience, the message is clear: strong communities are built when we show up for one another. We’re proud to begin this journey with Cheshire Without Abuse, and we’re glad you’re here.Remember to tell our amazing local businesses, you found them in Go Local.Arch Publications Charity Partner 2026 www.mycwa.org.uk | info@mycwa.org.uk

my life to a checklist or a risk score. They saw me as a person at one of the hardest moments of my life. That experience stayed with me. More than 30 years later, it is still the reason I do this work.Every day at MyCWA, our team is on the frontline of domestic abuse. They answer calls from people who are unsure whether what they’re experiencing is abuse, but who know they can’t cope alone any longer. They support people who arrive at our doors in crisis, sometimes with children in tow, often with nothing more than the clothes they’re wearing and a phone in their pocket. They go above and beyond to gently build trust with children who’ve experienced abuse and had theirs shattered. For 14 years, I’ve been CEO of MyCWA and for the past 48 years, this organisation has been Cheshire’s lifeline for people experiencing domestic abuse. We began as Crewe Women’s Aid in 1977 – a small team of volunteers helping people ee harm, often to sofas or spare rooms. Today, guided by what survivors tell us they need, we oer clean and welcoming refuge spaces across Cheshire, a range of children’s support services, group recovery programmes, and behaviour change work for those who harm and want to change. But here’s what matters most: we’re still making tea. We’re still listening. We’re still treating people like people, not cases. The hardest truth about domestic abuse is this: it’s likely happening to someone you know. It may be the parent at the school gates who seems ne. The colleague who avoids talk of home. The neighbour you chat to over the fence. Many people experiencing abuse are still going to work, caring for their children, and smiling politely - while quietly surviving behind closed doors.Children see it all, even when adults try desperately to shield them. The hypervigilance. The walking on eggshells. The sudden silences when a key turns in the lock. That’s why our children’s services focus on safety, emotional recovery, and giving young people space to be heard in their own right. Here’s what keeps me awake at night: the demand for our services grows and grows, and most of our work with survivors relies on donations from the community, and grants from trusts and foundations. This includes our 24/7 helpline – with our team answering calls at all hours, often in the early hours when someone quietly calls while the rest of the house is sleeping. The children’s worker who helps a seven-year-old understand that the abuse wasn’t their fault. Our food, clothes and baby banks run by an incredible team of dedicated volunteers. It all runs on community generosity. On people like you.“At my darkest times, I thought death would be better than this. When I walked into refuge, I felt like it was my light at the end of the tunnel.”Those are the words of a woman in Cheshire who came to MyCWA for help. 12Commonplace, yet useful. Can be a good guide to date ranges for built structures - especially if old, worn and crumbly. What are they? Brick walls! Nothing to hit your head against… Conversely, solid brickwork can often be an open door to discovery.Sandstone, warm reddish-pink, is a Cheshire specialty. See the parish church. Despite this standout feature, brick is more abundant for building. So how do plain bricks manage to tell us anything about heritage? Layers (properly called courses) are regularly varied, creating patterns and therefore distinct styles. Strolling around Middlewich produces some fairly easy-to-identify examples.Take the whitened wall on Flea Lane, Bridge 28 over the Shropshire Union Canal. Here is ‘English Bond’, a course of stretchers (long sides) alternates with a course of headers (short or end part of brick showing), a pattern in use since the 15th century. Popular in the 1700’s, and for many years after, was the later introduction of decorative ‘Flemish Bond’. Alternating headers and stretchers are placed in each course. Although when splotchy and varicoloured, wall patterns can sometimes take a while to pick out! The Fire Station car park on its western (far) boundary is worth examining, as are many elevations on Wheelock Street.A third pattern, all over ‘old’ Middlewich is Garden Wall Bond. A block of three courses of stretchers is laid between courses of headers, clearly seen on Civic Way’s Victoria Building and roadside walls on King Edward Street at the High School.Fashions provide clues which help date Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleyhistoric buildings. Just as with clothing or architecture they reveal tastes of builders or owners. Those ‘show-o’ chimneys of twisted brick? Hallmark of wealthy Tudors, although not a feature of present-day Middlewich. Locally, admire instead the practically-minded curving canal arches. Sturdy bridges of English Bond built late 18th century on the Trent & Mersey and early 19th on the ‘New Cut’ are still today giving strength and durability.Eventually there had to be… a Brick Tax. Result: after 1784 brick sizes got bigger. The 1850’s saw a change from handmade products to mechanically-produced ones. Both sorts are useful for dating. Bear in mind that not all historical wallwork can be seen - external claddings often conceal original, earlier internal brick. The usual modern choice is plain Stretcher Bond, but even so may incorporate previous styles or a design. After a while, it is hard to resist noticing patterns! But if any samples are seen of thin, at orangey-red clay bricks, given appropriate context, well these are much, much older – Roman.

16Some novels grip you with plot twists; others win you over with heart. Fractured Healer, the ction debut from Congleton physiotherapist and author Dr. Chris Norris, somehow manages both—while also slipping in moments of warmth and humour that catch you pleasantly o guard. Released in July 2025, this contemporary drama blends medical insight, emotional depth, and a surprising amount of lightness, making it one of the most engaging debuts of the year.Congleton Author Dr. Chris Norris on Fractured HealerDebut novel that will make you laugh, cry, and feel everything in betweenAt the centre of the story is Liz, a high-ying surgeon whose polished exterior hides a trauma she’s carried since a university party two decades earlier. When people from her past reappear—including her rst love—Liz is forced to confront the guilt and grief she has spent years outrunning. Norris moves seamlessly between past and present, letting readers experience the bright, chaotic energy of Liz’s student days alongside the quieter, more introspective world of her forties. What makes the novel so refreshing is its tonal balance. Yes, Fractured Healer tackles heavy themes—trauma, redemption, the long shadow of a single mistake—but it also knows when to breathe. There are moments of sharp, relatable humour, the kind that comes from characters who are self-aware enough to laugh at life’s absurdities. Liz’s inner monologue, in particular, oers ashes of wit that make her feel wonderfully human. One chapter might leave you misty-eyed; the next might have you smiling at a perfectly timed line or an awkward reunion that feels painfully familiar.Norris’s 40-year physiotherapy career subtly shapes the novel’s emotional architecture. The story becomes an allegory for rehabilitation—not the glossy, inspirational kind, but the real version, full of setbacks, small victories, and the courage to try again. Readers have praised Liz as a awed but deeply relatable protagonist, someone whose struggle with self-esteem feels authentic rather than melodramatic.Critics have also highlighted the book’s exploration of moral grey areas. Instead of delivering a straightforward crime narrative, Norris examines the long-term psychological impact of a single event on everyone involved. Victim and oender are treated with nuance, making the story richer and more thought-provoking than a typical thriller.Early reviews describe the novel as “gripping,” “heartwarming,” and “emotionally resonant,” with many noting its ability to balance weighty themes with hope—and even humour. It’s the kind of book that sneaks up on you: one moment you’re laughing at a wry observation, the next you’re unexpectedly moved. For fans of Amanda Prowse, Jojo Moyes, or any reader who loves character-driven ction with emotional stakes, Fractured Healer is a standout choice. It’s a story about second chances, middle-age introspection, and the messy, beautiful process of putting yourself back together.

20Middlewich Sole Sisters began in January 2025 because I wanted to create something warm, welcoming, and supportive for women in our town. As a hybrid worker, I can spend long stretches at home on back-to-back online meetings, and it became clear how easy it is to feel isolated, disconnected, and low in energy. I knew there had to be other ladies feeling the same way, women who wanted company, condence, fresh air, and a reason to step outside again. The group was created for every woman who needs a boost: those who feel lonely working from home, those who want to rebuild condence, those looking to reduce stress, anxiety, or depression, and those who simply want to feel better in Middlewich Sole Sisters ladies walking groupMeet every Tuesday & Thursday from 7pm at The Bullringthemselves. It’s also for ladies who are new to the area, want to lose weight, want to explore our beautiful town, or want a gentle, friendly way to improve their health.Walking is one of the simplest and most powerful things we can do for our bodies and minds. It reduces the risk of coronary heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and high blood pressure. It improves memory, concentration, and learning ability, and it even helps protect against dementia and Alzheimer’s. But beyond the science, walking together creates connection, laughter, and a sense of belonging, and that’s what Sole Sisters is all about. We welcome all ages and all abilities. We walk twice a week from The Bullring in Middlewich at 7pm every Tuesday and Thursday, always at a pace that suits everyone. No one is left behind, and no one walks alone. There’s a lovely social side too. We enjoy meals out, fun activities, and little adventures together. We’ve just celebrated our rst birthday with a meal and a murder mystery evening, and we also fundraise when the need arises. What started as a simple idea has grown into a caring, supportive community of women who lift each other up, share life’s ups and downs, and enjoy every step along the way.Middlewich Sole Sisters is more than a walking group, it’s friendship, wellbeing, and togetherness wrapped into one warm, welcoming space.

28Why Lifelong Learning Is One of the Best Things You Can Do for Your BrainAs we get older, physical health often becomes a priority, staying active, eating well and attending regular check-ups. Yet cognitive health deserves equal attention. The brain, like the body, responds to challenge and training. For many years, scientists believed the brain became largely “xed” after early adulthood. We now know that neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form new neural connections and reorganise itself, continues throughout life. Each time we learn something new, whether it’s a language, a musical instrument, a craft or new technology, we strengthen communication between brain cells and build new neural pathways. This improves processing eciency and supports memory and attention systems.Regular mental challenge supports concentration, working memory and faster information processing, contributing to cognitive reserve. While this doesn’t prevent ageing, it can help the brain function more eectively for longer. An often-overlooked aspect of cognitive tness is hearing, particularly the ability to process speech in noisy environments. Understanding conversation in restaurants or busy gatherings requires coordination between auditory processing, attention, memory and language systems. When hearing becomes more dicult, the brain must work harder, which can lead to fatigue and social withdrawal, reducing both cognitive and social stimulation.Encouragingly, auditory skills can be trained. Listening in noise, distinguishing speech sounds and tracking conversation are skills that improve with structured, guided practice, strengthening how the brain processes sound, not just how the ears detect it.At The Studio Goostrey, a structured programme is now available to support cognitive and auditory tness together. The programme engages participants in learning activities designed to challenge memory, attention and processing speed, alongside targeted listening exercises that train the brain to better separate speech from background noise. The result is improved listening condence, stronger social engagement and communication that feels less eortful. The programme is ideal for adults who feel they have to concentrate harder to follow conversations, avoid noisy environments because listening feels tiring, want to stay mentally sharp as they get older, or simply enjoy structured, brain-healthy challenges. No specialist knowledge is required, just a willingness to practise and stay engaged. For more information, pop into The Studio Goostrey or call 01477 779071..Research suggests that almost half of dementia cases worldwide could be prevented or delayed. Even more compelling is the nding that if everyone had access to good quality education in early life, there would be ve fewer cases of dementia for every 100 people who develop it today. While we cannot change the education we received as children, we can better understand how learning, at every stage of life, shapes the resilience of our brains.Education helps build what scientists call cognitive reserve: the brain’s ability to adapt and compensate if damage occurs later in life. When we learn, brain cells form new connections, creating networks that support memory, attention and problem-solving. The more we stimulate those networks, in childhood and beyond, the stronger and more adaptable they become. In this Social Collective feature, we explore three powerful contributors to lifelong brain health: lifelong learning in adulthood, the restorative impact of creative practice, and the crucial foundations laid in early years education. The Social CollectiveExploring the relationships that shape local living. Why Painting & Sketching Is Good for Your Well-BeingIn a fast-paced world lled with constant notications and pressures, creative practice oers a powerful way to reset. Painting and sketching are not reserved for professional artists, they are accessible tools for supporting mental clarity, emotional expression and cognitive vitality. When you paint or draw, your focus shifts naturally to the present moment. Choosing mark-making tools, exploring tone and form, and developing ideas on paper creates a state of immersion similar to mindfulness. This focused attention calms the mind and lowers stress levels. Even a short creative session can leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed.Creating art also boosts condence. Completing a piece, however simple, provides a sense of achievement. Over time, seeing improvement and developing a personal style nurtures self-esteem and encourages a healthy focus on progress rather than perfection.Art provides a valuable non-verbal outlet for emotion. For those who struggle to articulate feelings in words, creative work oers a safe and expressive alternative. This emotional release can promote greater self-awareness and balance. From a cognitive perspective, painting and sketching stimulate imagination and problem-solving skills, keeping the brain active and engaged. For older adults, creative practice can help maintain mental sharpness. For younger participants, it encourages creative thinking and emotional intelligence. Studies suggest that engaging in creative activities may help reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.Equally important is the social element. Whether practised alone or in a group, art fosters connection and belonging. Joining a class or sketch club builds friendships and shared experiences, important protective factors in overall wellbeing and cognitive health.Cheshire-based professional artists Allie Pottinger and Al Staord, who are based at their studios in Swettenham Heath, Congleton, are launching a monthly sketch club to encourage people of all abilities to experience these benets. Their rst gathering will take place at Clonterbrook on Wednesday March 11th from 10am to 12pm at their studios, and participants are invited to join free of charge. For further details, contact Alison at alison@alliepottinger.com or alison@alisonstaord.com. Why Early Years Education Is the Key to Children’s Future SuccessWhile lifelong learning strengthens the brain, the foundations of cognitive reserve are laid in early childhood. At birth, a baby’s brain is around a quarter of its adult size. By age three, it reaches approximately 80% of its adult size, and by ve, around 90%. During this period, neural connections form rapidly, shaped by experiences, relationships and environment. Positive early learning experiences strengthen these connections, building the circuits that support thinking, memory and problem-solving for life. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework supports development across seven key areas: Personal, Social and Emotional Development; Physical Development; Communication and Language; Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding the World; and Expressive Arts and Design.

36A very brief (but true) historyPadel began in 1962 in Acapulco, Mexico, when Enrique Corcuera adapted a court at his home by adding walls and a net. It later took o in Spain in the 1970s, spread quickly through Europe and South America, and grew into the modern sport we see today: fast, social, tactical, and wildly addictive. How you play (without feeling like you need a coaching badge)The rules are reassuringly familiar if you’ve ever watched tennis, but the experience is completely its own.You play two vs two, and the court is smaller than a tennis court, so you’re never miles away from the action. Serving is underarm (a blessing for shoulders everywhere), and the scoring runs like tennis: 15, 30, 40, game. The twist is the walls: after the ball bounces on your side, it can hit the glass behind you and you can still return it. At rst this feels like sorcery; later it feels like a superpower. And this is why padel is such a hit: rallies last longer, points become little tactical puzzles, and even beginners can have those “did we just do that?!” moments within a session or two. You don’t have to master everything on day one. You just have to show up and have a go.Why everyone’s obsessed (and why you might be next)Padel is easy to start, but it stays interesting as you improve. You can have fun right away, even if your technique is wobbly and your footwork is more “excited girae” than “elite athlete.” Because it’s doubles, it’s also incredibly social. Every game involves four people, which means conversation, teamwork, and the occasional dramatic apology when you both go for the same ball. It’s also kind to the body compared to some sports: you move, bend, react, and work up a sweat, but you’re not pounding along for miles or throwing yourself around like a stunt double. That makes it ideal for teenagers, parents, grandparents, and everyone in between. And yes, it’s addictive. The sort of sport where you nish one game and immediately start planning the next. Suddenly you’re in a group chat. Suddenly you own a racket. Suddenly Comedian and avid player Jason Manford, Andy Murray, David Beckham, and nearly every Housewife from Beverly Hills to New York have all been swept up in padel fever. And now Holmes Chapel is joining that glossy, sporty club with our own freshly built padel courts at Everybody Health and Leisure (Holmes Chapel Community Centre). Now, I haven’t been sleeping under a rock for my 48 years on earth… but I had only heard of padel in recent years. I know. You may have just dropped your cup of tea over my ignorance, but honestly is my best policy (and besides, I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought “padel” was a typo).Like all modern trends, padel crept into my life via Instagram. One minute you’re watching someone make a traybake in three steps, and the next you’re seeing athletic people in sunglasses pinging a ball o glass walls like they’re starring in a sports advert. Then I spotted something much closer to home: the new courts being carefully planned, measured, and built at the Community Centre. And when the courts were nally in place, those tidy, enclosed 10 x 20 metre rectangles, it became clear this wasn’t a passing fad. It was a proper “we’re doing this now” moment for Holmes Chapel. So, what actually is padel?Think of it as tennis and squash having a friendly, sociable baby. It’s usually played in doubles on a smaller court, with walls and glass that are very much part of the game. The best bit? You don’t need to be super sporty to enjoy it. Padel is genuinely brilliant for young and old, for complete beginners and condent players, and for anyone who likes the idea of exercise that doesn’t feel like punishment.Game, Set… Padel!ByEverybody Health & Leisureyou’re watching padel highlights at 10pm “just to learn tactics” (sure). The practical bit (Holmes Chapel edition)If you fancy giving it a go, booking is simple, courts can be booked through the Playtomic app, and Everybody members can access a discount on court bookings. If you’re new to the sport, don’t worry. On-site sta can explain the basics, and you can also nd Intro to Padel and social sessions through the Playtomic academy. More advanced coaching options will be available later this year too, for anyone who gets properly hooked.Even better, you don’t need to turn up fully kitted out like a professional athlete. Rackets are available to borrow from reception, and balls are available to purchase on site.Everybody Padel’s mission (and it matters)The whole point here is simple: padel is for everyone. All ages, all abilities, all backgrounds, whether you’re a complete beginner, a returning player, or someone who just wants a new way to move, laugh, and meet people locally. The aim is accessibility, community, and fun rst.So yes, Holmes Chapel, we’ve arrived. Not just with shiny new courts, but with a sport that genuinely welcomes everyone. If you see me down there looking delighted and slightly confused, do wave. I’ll be the one celebrating a shot I denitely didn’t mean to play. For more information, visit everybody.org.uk - To book, visit playtomic.com

38What is an Amicable Divorce? An amicable divorce is not easy. Any separation or divorce is painful and may involve the stress of a house move, a remortgage or calling on your parents for emotional or nancial support. The benets of getting divorced amicablyWhilst an amicable divorce isn’t without stress or pain, it does mean that you don’t end up in court ghting over who gets to stay in the family home or arguing over whether the children should be returned to you on Sunday evening or if your ex-partner should be able to take them to school each Monday. Not making a court application for a judge to decide how your assets are divided or how your children’s time should be split between you and your ex-partner can save you thousands in legal fees. Just as importantly, communicating about parenting arrangements or working together to get the family home sold makes your separation a bit easier. If you have your day in court, tell your former partner what you really think of them and your relationship, and have the judge impose a decision, animosity and legal costs increase.Let’s talk legal... Amicable Divorce ByEvolve Family LawHow a family lawyer can help you get divorced amicablyA family law solicitor can help you both get an amicable divorce by:• Filing a joint no-fault divorce application on your behalf.• Helping you both negotiate an agreed nancial settlement and asking the judge to approve your nancial consent order.• Supporting you in working out the parenting arrangements for your children and recording them in a parenting plan.Evolve Family Law provides a One Lawyer Divorce Service. This service allows a husband and wife to use the same specialist family lawyer to obtain their no-fault divorce, to convert their separation agreement or mediated nancial agreement into a binding nancial court order, or to obtain legal advice on how child support and parenting arrangements work.If the One Lawyer Divorce Service is the right t for you, then our family law experts provide cost-eective and bespoke legal advice for you as a couple. The service enables you to work together to reach a nancial settlement or parenting plan, or to le for your no-fault divorce. Our One Lawyer Divorce Service isn’t suitable for everyone. This does not necessarily mean you will have to go to court and ask a family law judge to decide how your assets are split or how much time your children should spend with you.At Evolve Family Law, our team of family law solicitors work hard to try and ensure that you can nd an alternative dispute resolution option that enables you and your spouse to divorce as civilly as possible and without relying on the court to make decisions for you. The right alternative dispute resolution for you may be family mediation, collaborative law or arbitration. We will spend the time getting to understand your priorities and needs to ensure that your separation stays as civil as possible.

Many thanks to Paul Harrison who got in touch to tell us that the youthful couple pictured at the Rockies last month was himself and his then girlfriend, now wife. Sadly I didn’t realise until it was too late that Paul hadn’t actually told us his wife’s name. So, for now, let’s say hello Mrs Harrison!Stands the church clock at ten to three…And is there honey still for tea…?- Rupert BrookeWell Middlewich’s church clock is certainly standing still, but not at ten to three. It’s stubbornly informimg us that it’s 12 o’clock at all hours of the day and nightAs ne an example of something completely taken for granted until it’s no longer there. Or at least, not telling the right time.I thought that while we’re waiting for MiddlewichmemoriesByDave Robertsnormal service to be resumed, we might take a look at the church clock and its predecessor, the Jubilee Clock. The present clock came from Pring’s Wire Works in Elworth, and was placed in the tower in the early 1970s to replace the previous mechanical clock which had been there since 1897 and had been installed to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria. The Jubilee clock was cosmetically restored by High School pupils and put on display in the church for a few years. It’s now at the premises of its original manufacturer in Whitchurch.Freddie Ruscoe, who lived in King Street, climbed the tower every week to wind the clock, which boasted Westminster chimes. In the clock’s nal years those chimes became steadily more erratic , missing notes and occasionally not bothering to chime at all..The clock has always been lit by means of the public electricity supply for Middlewich’s street lights.Hence, up until the early 70s it had a sodium vapour street lamp inside it, giving it a yellow glow like all the other lights in the town centre. The electricity supply in the area has long been unreliable , causing diculties for the Christmas tree and decorations each year.In 2025 MTC went over to a dierent supplier for the tree and Christmas lights and it looks like whoever disconnected the lights inadvertently disconnected the clock too. It’s greatly missed and we look forward to this cherished local icon once again telling us the correct time, and gently and discreetly strikng the hours and half hours.
