Generations of residents have passed through its doors – whether to support veterans, play sport, enjoy an evening of music or bingo, or simply spend time with friends. It is one of those places that forms part of the fabric of Middlewich, often working quietly in the background but playing a huge role in bringing people together.Today, however, the Legion needs our help.Rising costs and essential repairs mean that the club now urgently needs to raise £20,000 to keep its doors open. Without that support, we risk losing a place that has served the town faithfully for nearly a century. It would be a huge loss – not only for veterans, but for sports teams, local groups and residents who rely on it as a welcoming space to meet and socialise. The Legion is home to snooker teams, pool teams, Crown Green bowls, and a much-loved concert room that hosts regular entertainment and bingo nights. More importantly, it is a place where people feel part of something – a community hub that has stood through generations of change. This month we’re helping to shine a light on the campaign to keep it going. If you are able to support the fundraising eort, even in a small way, it could make a real dierence in helping the Legion reach its 100th year and beyond.Places like this are part of what makes Middlewich special. Let’s stand together as a community and make sure this one doesn’t disappear.I hope you enjoy the rest of this month’s magazine, and as always, thank you for supporting our wonderful local community.Katy xRemember to tell our amazing local businesses, you found them in Go Local.Arch Publications Charity Partner 2026 www.mycwa.org.uk | info@mycwa.org.uk

Friends of Fountain Fields is a volunteer-led community group bringing free family events to Fountain Fields Park in Middlewich. Our aim is simple: to create opportunities for families to come together outdoors to play, learn, and connect. The group began with a shared belief that local parks can be more than just green space. With a little imagination and community eort, they can become places where children explore ideas, families meet new friends, and the town comes together. That spirit is at the heart of our rst event of the year, Stories the Earth Told, taking place on 22nd March. Families will be able to explore natural wonders and legends from around the world through seven themed activity tables representing dierent continents. Children can move between storytelling, creative activities, and hands-on discovery designed to spark curiosity about the planet we share. The fun continues with our Easter Egg Hunt on 4th April, where children will solve clues and crack codes to earn their chocolate prize. Alongside the hunt, families can also enjoy creative activities such as chromatography art.Throughout the rest of the year, Friends of Fountain Fields will host a variety of seasonal events designed to bring families together. These include a spring nature day with seed ball making and sunower planting, the return of our popular Middlewich Games, and the much-loved Roar in the Park dinosaur day, which Friends of Fountain FieldsFree Family Events Bringing Middlewich Togetherproved a huge hit with families last year.Later in the year, families can also look forward to celebrating Roald Dahl Day, along with our traditional Halloween and Christmas parties, which have become joyful xtures in the community calendar. For one Friends of Fountain Fields volunteer, the group has been about more than just events.“After moving to Middlewich during lockdown and having a baby, I felt isolated as I knew no one. That changed when I joined Friends of Fountain Fields. I’ve found friendships, community, and the joy of seeing families come together and children make happy memories. It truly shows the heart of our town.”Friends of Fountain Fields is entirely run by volunteers, and as our programme grows we are always looking for more people to get involved. Whether you can help set up a table, run a craft activity, share ideas, or simply lend a hand on the day, every contribution helps make these free community events possible. If you would like to attend an event, volunteer, or stay updated with what’s coming up, you can nd Friends of Fountain Fields on Facebook.Together, we’re helping Fountain Fields become a place where community, creativity, and happy memories grow.

The hope we expressed last month’ that the Middlewich church clock would soon be telling us the right time seems to be somewhat forlorn. The situation regarding the power supply for the clock and its light appears to be far more complicated than at rst thought. As a result Middlewich Mean Time remains at 12 o’clock for the foreseeable future. So let’s head back once more to Cledford where, a couple of months ago ,we were looking at that fondly remembered feature of the industrial landscape The Rockies.Paul Harrison and his wife, who we can happily now record is called Sheila, still have fond memories of The Rockies and - unexpectedly and rather amazingly - managed to preserve a couple of MiddlewichmemoriesByDave Robertsfragments of them, one of which is inset in our photo. The photo itself was taken on the 7th July 1965 by local railway expert Alan Wilkinson. The train shown is taking fuel oil from Stanlow to power the modern oil-red pottery kilns of Stoke-On-Trent.Engine no 92165 is approaching Cledford Lane and its train is at the location where, until 1942, Cledford Halt used to stand. This was a simple wooden 60ft long platform and it’s an interesting thought that at one time it was possible to travel from Cledford to Middlewich by train!Just in front of the locomotive can be seen the brine line, a pipeline installed by Murgatroyds Salt & Chemical Works in the 1950s to carry brine from their salt works in Brooks Lane up to their newly built chemical works on Booth Lane. The pumping station which sent the brine up to the works has now been preserved by Middlewich Heritage Trust and is open to the public on selected days during the Summer months. The Rockies themselves were a few yards in front of the train on the other side of Cledford Lane, among the crumbling ruins of former saltt and chemical works. It should be remembered that the old open pan salt works were almost temporary buildings, hastily and cheaply built because the very salt that they produced was so corrosive that it would eat away at the structures whiuch produced it. Cheap brick and corrugated iron were the order of the day.Beyond the railway line, between Middlewich and Holmes Chapel , long before the acres of industrial units we know today, was mostly nothing but lush green Cheshire farmland.

16In Your 20s and 30s: Building Healthy HabitsFor many people in their twenties and thirties, life can feel busy. Work, commuting, raising children and social commitments can make exercise feel like another task on an already long list. However, these years are important for establishing habits that can support long-term health.Physical activity helps improve circulation, increases oxygen ow to the brain and supports the development of new neural connections. These processes help build what researchers sometimes describe as “brain resilience”, meaning the brain is better able to cope with age-related changes later in life. The good news is that this does not mean spending hours in the gym. Everyday activities all contribute, including:• Walking or cycling to work• Playing sport or attending a tness class• Swimming or dancing• Walking the dog• Weekend walks or bike ridesEven small amounts of regular movement can help establish healthy routines that last throughout life. In Your 40s and 50s: A Key Time for PreventionMidlife is increasingly recognised by researchers as one of the most important periods for reducing dementia risk. Many of the health conditions linked to dementia, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease, often develop during these years. Physical activity helps manage these conditions and supports the health of the blood vessels that supply the brain.Studies suggest that people who maintain an active lifestyle during midlife may signicantly reduce their likelihood of developing dementia later on.Regular activity also supports mental wellbeing. Exercise can reduce stress, improve sleep and boost mood, all of which contribute to healthy brain function. The NHS recommends aiming for around 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week. This could include activities such as:• Brisk walking• Cycling• GardeningWhen we think about staying active, most of us think about heart health, maintaining a healthy weight, or simply feeling tter. But research increasingly shows that physical activity is also one of the most important things we can do to support our brain health.Dementia aects nearly one million people in the UK, and the number is expected to rise as the population ages. While age and genetics play a role, scientists now know that lifestyle factors, including physical activity, can signicantly inuence risk.Encouragingly, this means many of the things that support our physical health can also benet our brains. Regular movement helps improve blood ow to the brain, supports the growth of new brain cells and helps reduce health conditions linked to dementia.A long-term study published in the journal Brain Communications followed people across several decades of adulthood. Researchers found that those who remained physically active during adulthood had healthier brain structures later in life, particularly in areas associated with memory. The key message from the research is simple: staying active throughout life matters, and it is never too early or too late to start. The Social CollectiveExploring the relationships that shape local living.• Fitness classes• SwimmingIn practice, many people reach this target simply by making small changes to daily routines, walking more, taking the stairs, or joining local activities. In Your 60s and Beyond: Staying Active for Brain HealthMany people assume that if they were not particularly active earlier in life, it may be too late to make a dierence. Fortunately, research suggests the opposite.Physical activity later in life can still improve memory, thinking skills and overall brain health. Staying active also helps maintain balance, strength and mobility, supporting independence as we age.Activities that are popular and accessible for many older adults include:• Walking groups• Swimming or aqua classes• Gentle yoga or tai chi• Community exercise sessions• GardeningSocial activity also plays an important role. Joining a group activity not only encourages regular movement but also provides opportunities for social connection, which is another important factor in supporting cognitive health. The Role of Local CommunitiesCreating opportunities for people to stay active is not just about individual motivation, communities also play an important role.Local walking routes, parks, leisure centres, sports clubs and community classes all help make physical activity accessible.Across Cheshire and the wider UK, many organisations run initiatives designed to help people stay active, particularly those who may feel isolated or unsure where to begin. Walking groups, community tness sessions and social sports clubs are increasingly popular ways to combine exercise with social connection. These types of activities help remove barriers to participation and encourage people of all ages to stay active. The benets go beyond physical health. Community activity strengthens social connections, improves wellbeing and helps people feel more connected to the places where they live. The Connection Between Physical Exercise and Hearing HealthYou might wonder, what does exercise have to do with your hearing? It turns out, a lot. Cardiovascular health is intricately linked to the health of your hearing. The inner ear relies on a rich blood supply to keep its delicate hair cells functioning properly. Conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, which aect circulation, can impair the function of these hair cells over time, potentially leading to hearing loss.Fortunately, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and lifestyle choices such as not smoking can signicantly improve circulation, beneting both your heart and your hearing. Maintaining cardiovascular health plays a crucial role in preserving the delicate structures of the inner ear, helping to safeguard your hearing abilities for years to come.Untreated hearing loss is not only linked to communication diculties, but it is also associated with reduced physical functioning and an increased risk of falls, particularly among older adults. If you’re experiencing issues with balance or spatial awareness, it could be a sign that your auditory health is being aected. In such cases, it may be a good idea to consult your GP or undergo an auditory health check to determine whether there are any concerns with your hearing.Once you address hearing or balance issues, you may feel more condent in your ability to engage in physical activity. This, in turn, could create a positive feedback loop, improving both your physical and auditory health.Engaging in regular aerobic exercise, such as walking, cycling, or swimming, can have signicant benets for both your heart and hearing. Even a brisk walk in the morning or evening can enhance circulation, which positively aects

18overall health and well-being. In addition to boosting heart health, exercise can help support the optimal functioning of your auditory system, reducing the risk of hearing-related issues. For those dealing with tinnitus, regular physical activity can provide substantial relief. Exercise enhances blood circulation, which may help improve ear function and reduce the symptoms of tinnitus. Moreover, physical activity helps to reduce stress and anxiety—two factors known to worsen tinnitus. Activities like walking, swimming, and yoga are not only benecial for your cardiovascular health but also promote relaxation, improve sleep, and regulate mood, all of which contribute to making tinnitus less noticeable over time.Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which improve mood and build resilience, making it easier to cope with persistent ringing or buzzing in the ears. By maintaining an active lifestyle, individuals with tinnitus can better manage their symptoms and enhance their overall quality of life. The auditory system plays a fundamental role in connecting us to the world around us. It allows us to hear, communicate, and experience emotions tied to sound. Beyond hearing, the vestibular portion of the ear is crucial for maintaining balance and spatial awareness. While we often think of the ears as merely instruments for hearing, they serve a much broader purpose, signicantly impacting our physical health. At The Studio, we are committed to supporting ear health and overall well-being. We understand that physical activity has numerous benets not only for general health but also for auditory health. By incorporating regular exercise into your routine, you may discover an unexpected benet: the preservation and improvement of your hearing health. For more information, pop into The Studio Goostrey or call 01477 779071.Every Step CountsWhile there is currently no guaranteed way to prevent dementia, research consistently shows that regular physical activity is one of the most eective ways to support brain health.Importantly, the benets build over time. Even small increases in activity can make a dierence.Whether it is a short walk each day, joining a local class, or simply moving more during the week, every bit of movement contributes to a healthier body and mind. The message from researchers is clear: when it comes to protecting our brains, staying active is one of the best investments we can make, at any age.SourcesBrain Communications – Longitudinal study on physical activity and brain health across adulthood - academic.oup.com/braincomms/article/7/1/fcae431/7933115Alzheimer’s Society – Physical activity and dementia risk - www.alzheimers.org.ukAlzheimer’s Research UK – Dementia risk factors and lifestyle - www.alzheimersresearchuk.orgNHS – Physical activity guidelines for adults - www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/

the same thing: someone noticing mattered more than they realised. At MyCWA, we have been supporting people across Cheshire impacted by domestic abuse since 1977 – making us one of the UK’s longest-established domestic abuse charities. And from decades on the frontline of domestic abuse, we know abuse take many dierent forms - from coercive control and emotional abuse to physical violence and nancial control – and, for most survivors, ongoing harassment long after a relationship has ended. Many of the people who contact us have lived with the abuse for years before reaching out for help. One of the reasons is that domestic abuse thrives in isolation. People experiencing it often feel ashamed, confused, or worried they won’t be believed. They may have been told repeatedly that the situation is their fault. They may fear what will happen if they try to leave. That is why communities matter so much. You do not have to be a professional to make a dierence. You simply have to care enough to notice. If someone in your life seems dierent and you have a quiet sense that something might not be right, the most important thing you can do is gently open the door to a conversation. That might be as simple as saying: “I’ve noticed you seem a bit worried lately. If you ever want to talk, I’m here.”You do not need to have the perfect words. In fact, simple, non-judgemental conversations are often the most powerful. What matters most is listening. People experiencing abuse often worry they will be blamed for staying, or told what they should have done dierently. Questions like “Why don’t you just leave?” can unintentionally shut conversations down.Instead, try focusing on support rather than solutions. You might say: “You don’t deserve to be treated like that.” “It’s not Domestic abuse rarely announces itself loudly. It is not always bruises, shouting, or police cars outside a house. More often, it is quiet. It hides in everyday life: at the school gates, in workplaces, in WhatsApp groups, behind perfectly normal conversations.Someone might stop coming out as often. They might seem anxious about replying to messages. They might apologise constantly. They might cancel plans at the last minute, or appear unusually guarded when their phone rings.Sometimes people notice these small changes and feel uneasy. But then a second thought follows: What if I’m wrong? What if I make things worse? So nothing is said. And yet, again and again, people who have experienced domestic abuse tell us If You’re Worried About Someone, Start HereBy Saskia Lightburn-Ritchie, CEO of MyCWA (Cheshire Without Abuse)your fault.” “You’re not alone – I’m here.” For many survivors, hearing those words can be a turning point. It is also important to remember that leaving an abusive relationship is not always simple or safe. People may be concerned about housing, nances, children, or the risk of the abuse escalating if they try to leave. One of the most common threats used by perpetrators is chillingly eective: “Report me and they’ll take the kids away.”That is where independent specialist services like ours come in.Domestic abuse is far more common than most people realise. Across the UK, around one in three women and one in ve men will experience it during their lifetime. That means every community is aected. But communities can also be part of the solution. And what many people don’t realise is that services like MyCWA exist because communities choose to support them. While we work closely with local partners, a signicant portion of our frontline support – including our 24/7 helpline, children’s services and community recovery programmes – rely completely on charitable funding and the generosity of individuals. The demand for help continues to grow each year. Our team responds to calls from people in crisis at all hours of the day and night, often when someone is quietly reaching out while the rest of the house is asleep. If you are able to support that work, even a small monthly donation can help keep those services available for the people who need them most. You might also consider choosing MyCWA as your workplace charity, or organising a small fundraising event with colleagues.Just a few pounds a month helps ensure that when someone nally nds the courage to ask for help, there is someone there to answer.Visit www.mycwa.org.uk to learn more about our services, access support, or nd out how you can help sustain this work. Because no one should have to face domestic abuse alone.Arch Publications Charity Partner 2026 www.mycwa.org.uk | info@mycwa.org.uk

48The pleasurable task of nding and booking a holiday can be a major stressor when you are a separated or divorced parent. The pleasure of looking forward to a half-term or summer break with your children can evaporate if your ex-partner won’t communicate with you or is uncooperative. Problems can mount if your new partner has children from a previous relationship, and you and your partner are juggling holidaying as a blended family with two ex-partners who don’t seem to understand the complexities of taking children on holiday as divorced parents.Holiday ordersYou may need a holiday order if:1. You want to take your children overseas on holiday, and you don’t have a child arrangement order that names you as the parent your children live with.2. You have a child arrangement order, but you want to take the children abroad for over four weeks.3. You want to holiday in the UK with your children, but your ex won’t agree to overnight contact or a week’s holiday, Let’s talk legal... Taking children on holiday when you are a divorced parentByEvolve Family Lawsaying that you can only take the children away for a long weekend.4. Your ex-partner won’t agree to swap their contact dates, preventing you from taking the children on holiday on the dates your new partner and their children are available to go on holiday.5. Your ex won’t agree to your taking the children abroad unless you agree not to take your new partner with you.Legal advice on the law and holidaying with your children after a separationIf you are intending to book a holiday and you are not sure legally where you stand, or you have booked and your ex is now saying the children cannot go on the planned trip, the family law solicitors at Evolve Family Law can outline how the law applies in your circumstances. They will explain whether you need your ex-partner’s agreement for the holiday and how to get a holiday order if you need either your ex-partner’s consent or a court order.Getting early holiday legal advice from a family lawyer may seem like overkill, but legal advice gives you peace of mind knowing that you are within your rights to take your children on holiday and will explain the paperwork you should take on holiday as a separated parent to minimise the risk of problems at the airport or ferry terminal. If you book a holiday and hope for the best, your ex may be able to stop your children from boarding the plane if you don’t have your ex-partner’s written permission or a holiday order. The stress of hoping for the best when you know your ex-partner and what they are capable of just isn’t worth it.The family law solicitors can write to your former partner to get their agreement to a specic holiday or future holidays, or secure a child arrangement order or holiday order that enables you to go away without the extra stressor of having to negotiate being able to take a hard-earned break with your children.

52Ever noticed pavements or roads sprouting bright squiggles, lines and lettering? Meaningful codes to some, but temporary. Described as ‘eeting maps’ they chart the hidden lie of the land, directly under our tread. How? By using varying colours for each of the utilities, they indicate locations, directions, and depths of a complex array of pipes and cables - yet still mysterious to most of us! Historical legacy though? No. However, also within urban landscapes are symbols carved into stone. Somewhat more permanent, might they be an interesting part of our heritage?Yes, and it’s all down to the famed Ordnance Survey (OS). Early map-making activities left visible markers all over the place – rewarding to spot if you know what to recognise. During the 19th and 20th centuries around half a million linear symbols were made. Most numerous? Hand-sized ‘cutmarks’- an inscribed up-arrow surmounted by a horizontal stroke, the ‘levelling line’. For convenience many were incised into semi-permanent vertical surfaces such as church walls or stone bridges. Middlewich ‘conceals’ a few in plain sight. Why did this happen? OS mapping took o at the close of the 18th century. Distances and heights above sea level had to be measured so the land could be better understood… and prepared for defensive purposes. Intrepid surveying teams did amazing pioneering work, applying precise benchmarks to built structures wherever needed. They created a valuable national network of datum points. A standard for comparison was essential, of course, Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleyso everything was calculated from… a Cornish harbour wall at Newlyn. But with the advent of GPS (global positioning systems), maintenance inevitably ceased. Not surprisingly, because of losses through demolitions and road-widening, these quaint records are fast diminishing. Several hundred thousand do survive, however, and Middlewich retains a tiny share. One adorns the base of St Michael’s Church tower. Another faces Nantwich Road at the canal bridge. In the less usual horizontal position, one lies on the top steps of Stanthorne Lock (hiding on my last visit). Other types of benchmark were rectangular numbered plates - ush brackets - set at and low into sides of buildings. Middlewich has this variety too, a type dating most likely from the 1920’s. An example quietly resides in Lewin Street. OS is constantly measuring and recording the physical landscape - an ever-changing thing. Technology now though involves orbiting satellites and laser beams rather than etching measured marks into rocks. (Yet those colourful and signicant squiggles on footpaths seem set to stay.) As always, it’s fun to identify mementoes from a dierent age.
