8If you want to try something new and love music why not have a go at hand bell ringing? You do not have to be a musician or to have any musical knowledge to experience the thrill of making music with hand bells since the music is marked up to make it easy to follow. However, it helps if you can count to four, six, and occasionally even up to nine! Sometimes this proves more challenging than you might expect and practices are always punctuated by peals of laughter! We all know about tower bells, tolling out across the countryside. Not so many of us are acquainted with their smaller, older cousins, the hand bells. In fact hand bells have been around for a very long time and certainly existed during the Roman Empire. However, St. Michael and All Angels Ringing TeamJoin us on Tuesday evenings in Middlewichit was not until they had moved into the church that they became associated with music making, perhaps as a simple accompaniment to chants or for practising change ringing. By the 19th century tune ringing was well established and that is what we do.The ability to play tunes is the main advantage of hand bell ringing since it is well nigh impossible with the big bells. Paradoxically, the St. Michael and All Angels Ringing Team (SMAART) was formed as a result of a demonstration in 1999 by George Bailey, a tower bell ringer and the choir master at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Middlewich, to the local Mothers’ Union. This provoked interest amongst the members, resulting in a team being formed. SMAART has developed steadily and, over the past 25 years, has given performances in all sorts of venues. In that time we have built up an extensive repertoire of music - classical, folk, musicals, hymns, carols, etc. As well as the hand bells we also use hand chimes and belleplates, which are much lighter instruments. We are seeking to welcome new members to our friendly and enthusiastic team to share our love of hand bell ringing. Although it is always a pleasure to make music there are other benets to activities such as this. It is very much a team activity since we all rely on each other. It is excellent for developing hand, ear and eye co-ordination and it provides an inclusive social experience suitable for all ages. So why not have a go? We practise on Tuesday evenings in Middlewich. If you are interested in nding out more about us or joining us please contact David Hawkes on 01606 832148 or Chris Overton on 07722 195807.

12New year, new directions? Walking, cycling, driving – whatever mode, when out and about within Middlewich, it’s likely you’re re-tracing some old, old paths. Seldom though, is that idea given much thought. Over centuries people before us helped carve out these useful byways. Often, we really do follow in their footsteps. How can we tell?Teasing out any such remnants in Middlewich can be quite intriguing.Usually it is helpful to regress the street plan to its more essential core. Medieval lanes typically radiate from the church – here, St Michael’s - and the King’s high way – here, Hightown and Leadsmithy, Wheelock and Kinderton Streets. From this hub these ‘spokes’ fanned out through productive rural land. Passages repeatedly made across outer areas became eld paths. Later, when agricultural land was released for building, such well-trodden tracks became submerged under housing and gardens. Hannah’s Walk (Wood Alley) originally led out as far as the Nantwich Road. It wasn’t too long ago that this tree-lined section retained its sunken ‘holloway’ appearance, truly reecting its role as a beaten path.Cutting the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union in the early 19th century severed this route so useful to merchants, townspeople and farm labourers. Nowadays its ghost lies under unsuspecting residential spread. Flea Lane fared better by provision of canal bridge number 28, maintaining the connection. Eventually too, its ultimate destination, the Manor House and grounds, was thwarted by the development of street patterns starting at Westbury Close. Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth SmalleyNow densely built up, St Ann’s Road possibly started life as a ‘green lane’ - a back way curving behind the early commercial zone. White Horse Alley, narrow and cobbled, still gives a avour of an old-fashioned thoroughfare. Once it linked the bustling brine pits and trade activities of Lewin Street to outlying elds and beyond.Further back still are Roman roads. Legendary! A relic track can be discerned each side of the wooden bridge over the river Wheelock at Sutton, these days creating an attractive country walk or ride. Yet… nothing is ever really ‘new’. Some of Middlewich’s seminal Roman roads were themselves based on earlier Iron Age tracks. Preserving lines of movement goes back a long way! In lots of cases however, it pays to be quick to capture any evidence. With near-constant construction or ‘improvements’ original, tell-tale features become disguised or obliterated. With it goes the record of tracks across the landscape made by countless, unknown footfalls. What does remain is therefore all the more fascinating…. Something maybe to muse on when out and about!

18swapped bottles, traded recipes, and shared feedback over WhatsApp. “We’d all turn up with a few bottles of whatever we’d brewed that week,” Andy laughs. “Then we’d go home, try each other’s beers, and come back next time with notes. It was a proper little community, half hobby, half social life.”Then fate stepped in. A friend mentioned that a local pub in Alsager, was closing down. Out the back sat a small but complete brewing setup, fermenters, pumps, the lot. Andy went along to take a look, thinking he might be able to buy a few bits for his home setup. Instead, he got an oer he couldn’t refuse.“I asked the landlord what he wanted for it,” he says. “He just looked at me and said, ‘If you can get it out by Sunday, it’s yours.’ I couldn’t believe it. It felt like the universe telling me to get on with it.”Cue a borrowed truck, a few good mates, a bemused wife, and one very happy landlord watching his brewery disappear out the door. “It was chaos,” Andy admits. “We didn’t really have a plan. Suddenly, I had a full commercial brewing kit and nowhere to put it.”For a while, the equipment lived in storage, tucked away in a friend’s shipping container while Andy worked out what to If you’d told Andy a few years ago he’d swap circuit boards and business ights for malt and mash tuns, he’d have laughed you out of the pub. Yet that’s exactly how life turned out, and it couldn’t feel more at home in Cheshire. After twelve years in the electronics industry, Andy’s work life was a carousel of airports and hotel rooms. Munich one week, Massachusetts the next. He’d become uent in ight schedules and carry-on packing, but life was starting to feel like one long business trip. Then, like it did for so many of us, the pandemic stopped everything.“I went from being away half the year to being home all the time,” Andy says. “At rst, it was a shock to the system. Then I started to realise how much I’d missed just… being home.”Like a lot of people suddenly grounded by lockdown, Andy began to rediscover old hobbies and interests. In his case, that meant dusting o a basic home-brewing kit that had been gathering dust in the garage. With time on his hands and curiosity to spare, he decided to have another go at brewing a proper pint. The kitchen lled with the warm, bready smell of malt and hops, a scent that quickly became addictive. What started as a kitchen experiment soon turned into something much bigger. “I think it was that feeling of making something real again,” he explains. “After years of working in tech, where everything’s abstract and digital, brewing felt tangible. You can see it, smell it, taste it. There’s something really satisfying about that.”Soon, he was part of a small but growing network of local home brewers in South Cheshire. They met up in pub car parks, Brewing the Dream: The Rise of Four Priests, Part 1by Katy O’Regando next. “I’d go down there and just stare at it sometimes,” he laughs. “It was this big, shiny promise of what might come next, if I was brave enough to give it a go.”Eventually, he found a small industrial unit in Middlewich, nothing fancy, just enough space to build something of his own. And that’s exactly what he did. With the help of friends, family, and a few very generous locals, Andy spent months transforming the bare unit into a working brewery. Every weekend was a new project, sealing the oors, tting the drains, rewiring the electrics, painting, testing, and cleaning until it was ready to brew.Out of all that graft, Four Priests Brewery was born. The name came from local history, a nod to a centuries-old legend tied to the area, and it felt right: traditional, local, and rooted in place. From day one, Andy decided to lm the journey. Not for marketing, just as a way to share progress with the little home-brew network that had cheered him on. Those early YouTube videos were nothing fancy, just a bloke in overalls talking about pumps and pressure valves, but they struck a chord. People loved the honesty, the DIY spirit, and the lack of pretence.“I didn’t set out to be on camera,” Andy says. “It was more like a diary at rst, but then people started asking questions, oering advice, and following along. It became this lovely community of people rooting for you from behind a screen.”As the brewery took shape, the rst test batches of beer rolled out, traditional, cask-conditioned ales that spoke to Cheshire’s pub culture. Andy wasn’t chasing trends or craft-beer hype; he wanted to brew the kind of pints people actually drink, the golden bitters, session ales and amber beers that have stood the test of time.“I’ve always loved proper pubs,” he says. “The ones where you walk in, the re’s on, and everyone knows each other. That’s the kind of beer I wanted to make, something that belongs in that setting.”Soon, local landlords were taking notice. Pubs like The Beer Emporium in Sandbach and The King’s Lock in Middlewich started stocking his beers, and word spread quickly. Four Priests had become a xture on the local scene, not because of ashy marketing or gimmicks, but because it was good, honest beer made by someone who genuinely cared about it.But for Andy, the real reward wasn’t the recognition, it was the sense of belonging that had come from it all. “After so many years working away, I nally felt part of something local again,” he says. “People would pop by to see what I was brewing, oer a hand, drop o something useful. It was real community spirit.”That’s what Four Priests was built on from the very start, serendipity, hard graft, and a sprinkling of Cheshire magic. And that’s just the rst pour of the story. In Part Two, we’ll pick up where things take an unexpected turn, with TV cameras arriving at the brewery, a heartfelt tribute beer brewed in memory of a friend, and the revival of one of Sandbach’s best-loved venues.

28As the New Year arrives, a moment often associated with renewal and fresh starts, the team at Fires of Holmes Chapel is celebrating an exciting new chapter in its long-standing story. After almost two decades serving the community, the well-respected family business formerly known as Stove Yard Cheshire has unveiled a refreshed identity and a new name that better reects its evolution, values and growing expertise. The name Fires of Holmes Chapel was chosen with intention. While the business has become known for its technical understanding of wood-burning and multi-fuel stoves, its oering has always reached beyond this. For many years, the team has also specialised in gas res, replaces and outdoor heating and cooking solutions, with electric res introduced more recently to broaden the choice available to customers. The word “res” recognises this wider range, a celebration of all the ways people bring warmth, atmosphere and comfort into their homes and gardens. From their established showroom in Holmes Chapel, the team continues to provide high-quality appliances supported by honest, expert-led guidance. The refreshed brand reinforces what customers have appreciated from the beginning: craftsmanship, compliance, technical expertise and an approachable, local service. Fires of Holmes Chapel remains committed to oering expert consultation over salesmanship, ensuring safety, suitability and clarity guide every recommendation.Importantly, the business works only with manufacturers who meet and Katy meets... Fires of Holmes Chapel, a new chapter in 2026ByKaty O’Reganoften exceed environmental legislation. This commitment ensures that customers benet from cleaner, more ecient technologies that align with modern standards and future regulations, an increasingly important consideration for responsible home heating. The business began in 2005, somewhat unexpectedly, when a spare stove purchased for a house renovation was advertised in a local paper and demand surged overnight. By 2008, a small hands-on showroom opened its doors, giving customers the chance to explore products in person. This tactile, supportive approach remains central to the customer experience today.Over the years, the company became an appointed dealer for leading brands including Esse, Dunsley, Charnwood, Stovax, Hwam and Wiking. Their technical reputation also grew, becoming early HETAS Approved Retailers and contributing to national standards through HETAS committees and the Stove Industry Alliance. In 2024, when long-standing sales manager Russell Clarke became sole owner, the showroom oering expanded further to include electric res, media walls and an extended selection of surrounds.Today, as Fires of Holmes Chapel, the vision is clearer than ever: Safety-rst guidance, expert consultation, local care and a curated product range built on craftsmanship and environmental responsibility. To support this, the website, resofholmeschapel.co.uk, now includes an easy online consultation booking system, allowing customers to schedule tailored advice at a time that suits them.A New Year, a rened identity, and a fresh chapter for a trusted local business.

Over the last 12 months alone, I’ve looked into nearly 1,000 ears, and one of the questions I get asked most often is: what exactly is ear wax? What is Ear Wax?Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a completely normal and healthy substance produced by your body. It’s made up of oily secretions from glands in the ear canal, mixed with dead skin cells and tiny bits of debris such as dust or dirt. Far from being “dirty,” ear wax is your body’s way of keeping your ears clean and protected. It has some clever built-in benets too: it lubricates the ear canal, stops foreign particles from reaching your eardrum, and even has antibacterial and antifungal properties. In most cases, ear wax slowly works its way out of the ear naturally.A small amount is good for you, but problems can arise when wax builds up. This can cause discomfort, a blocked feeling, or even reduced hearing. Why Does Ear Wax Build Up?Some people never experience troublesome wax, while others nd it a recurring issue. Common reasons include:• Narrow or hairy ear canals – which make it harder for wax to exit naturally.• Age – wax often becomes drier and moves more slowly as we get older.• Skin conditions – such as eczema, which can increase akes and secretions.• Devices – frequent use of hearing aids, earbuds or earplugs can trap wax.Everything You Need to Know About Ear WaxBy Cheshire Ears• Environment – dusty or dirty workplaces can add extra debris.• Genetics – some people simply produce more wax than others.• Objects in the ear – cotton buds or similar tools push wax deeper, often worsening the problem.• It’s also worth noting that you might get a build-up in just one ear, while the other remains clear, there’s rarely one single cause. How Can I Reduce Wax Build-Up?Another question I often get asked is: how can I reduce wax build-up? Fortunately, there are some simple, safe steps you can take:• Avoid cotton buds or DIY tools – they push wax further in. Instead, wipe only the outer ear with a damp cloth.• Limit in-ear headphones – take breaks, clean them often, and switch to over-ear styles when possible.• Keep ears dry – gently dry after swimming or showering.• Use olive oil drops occasionally – once a month can soften wax naturally (but avoid daily use).• Have regular ear checks – every 6–12 months if you’re prone to build-up.• Skip ear candles – they are ineective and can be unsafe.• Know your ears – some people will always produce more wax due to genetics or canal shape. At Cheshire Ears, we specialise in safe, professional ear wax removal using microsuction and irrigation. If you’re struggling with wax build-up, we’d be happy to help you get back to clear and comfortable hearing. After all, I look forward to your ears possibly being part of my next 1,000 ears!32

36Many of us are asked to deal with a nancial issue for a relative or partner without the paperwork or authority to speak with the bank or nancial institution and have them take the necessary steps. The relative may need a bill paid or the account details changed, and you feel as if you are going round in circles with the bureaucracy of a bank, building society, or pension provider.Whether it is just one bill or a phone call to a bank, it may be time to talk about your loved one giving you the legal authority to help you sort out their nancial aairs when either asked to do so or permanently when they no longer have the capacity to do so.A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) for nancial aairs is a legal document that enables a trusted person (called an attorney) to manage the nancial aairs of someone who has authorised them to do so.An LPA is exible. It can be used when a relative has lost the capacity to make their own nancial decisions or manage their money, or when they are unable to do so due to hospitalisation or frailty.Let’s talk legal... Lasting Power of AttorneyByEvolve Family LawLPA law means there are safeguards for the LPA writer:1. The attorney must act in the interests of their relative, not their own.2. If the relative has capacity or some capacity, the attorney must consult the relative about when they will step in to help and the decisions they make.3. The LPA writer can appoint more than one attorney and say that the attorneys should make joint decisions. It can be hard to mention an LPA to a relative because you don’t want your family member to think that you view them as incapable of managing their money. However, every adult should have an LPA, whatever their age. That’s because none of us can predict when we might need a loved one to step in and help us manage our money, temporarily or permanently. The reality is that most of us don’t sign an LPA when we are in our 20s or 30s because we don’t think we will be the unlucky one who has a skiing or road accident. Years pass, and then mention of an LPA becomes a sensitive topic. What happens if you try to muddle through and help a relative without an LPA? If you are being asked for occasional help with sorting out online banking or phone calls, you may be able to manage. However, if your relative loses their capacity to make all their own nancial decisions, they will be unable to sign an LPA. Your only remedy to get their bills paid is to apply to the court for a Deputyship Order. That takes time (during which you may not be able to access your relative’s money to pay care home or other bills) and is much more expensive than registering an LPA. At Evolve Family Law, we recommend that you get your relative to speak to a solicitor about what an LPA involves and how it can be made to work for them. The lawyer acts for your relative (not you as their intended attorney), ensuring their interests are protected whilst explaining the drawbacks of not having an LPA or an up-to-date Will.

40Local author and former actress Helen Kent has transformed a treasured childhood memory into a heartwarming new children’s book, Girae Bear. This beautifully illustrated story, aimed at children aged 2-6, explores kindness, friendship, and the joy of embracing one’s unique qualities - all through the playful misadventures of Girae Bear as he navigates the world around him.It all began in Helen’s childhood, listening to her grandad tell her and her sister bedtime stories about the endearingly, clumsy Girae Bear. Each week he would come up with another hilarious story of how Girae Bear got himself in a muddle with the world around him and would have his granddaughters laughing so much, it’s a wonder they ever got o to sleep! In his memory, Helen hopes to bring his Girae Bear: A Childhood Memory Brought To LifeWritten by Helen Kent, illustrated by Shelley Eynonmagical stories - lled with the same fun and laughter she once enjoyed - to many other children around the world.Helen feels it is important that children everywhere have access to Girae Bear, even if they can’t aord to buy the book. That is why she created a YouTube channel alongside it, featuring Girae Bear & Fiona the Fairy getting up to all sorts of silly adventures - playing games, being in nature and generally bringing joy and happiness to children whilst upholding important values. At the heart of Helen’s work is a message about self-acceptance and compassion. Girae Bear doesn’t quite t in, yet he is loved and valued just as he is. Through him, Helen hopes children — and adults — are reminded that dierence is something to be celebrated, that mistakes are part of learning, and that kindness should always come rst.Ultimately, Helen hopes Girae Bear oers children a place of laughter, safety, and belonging - a reminder that the world can be joyful, welcoming and full of wonder. How incredible would it be if the next generation of children grew up to value themselves, feel worthy, be grateful and experience the world as a place to be enjoyed not feared?Find out more at www.giraebear.co.uk where you can purchase the book in time for Christmas, and join in the fun on Girae Bear’s YouTube channel www.youtube.com/@GiraeBear
