As I write this, we’ve been enjoying some truly lovely weather, those bright, clear spring days that seem to lift everything around us. Spring sunshine has always been my favourite. There’s a freshness to it that summer can’t quite match; the days feel warm and full of energy, yet the evenings remain cool enough for a comfortable night’s sleep, no restless, overheated nights just yet. It’s a gentle, balanced warmth that feels uplifting rather than overwhelming, and it brings with it a renewed sense of motivation. There’s something about this time of year that naturally brings a feeling of joy and possibility. The longer days, lighter mornings, and the return of colour to our gardens, parks and countryside all play their part. You can feel the change in the air, and it encourages us to slow down a little and appreciate what’s around us. Inspired by this, I paid a visit to Spark Lane Nursery to see what’s beginning to bloom. It’s a place that truly comes into its own in spring, and in this edition, we’re delighted to feature the stunning plants, vibrant colours and expert knowledge that make it such a special local destination.Of course, sunshine doesn’t just brighten our surroundings, it can have a powerful eect on how we feel too. A little more light, a little more time outdoors, and suddenly things can feel more manageable. In this month’s Social Collective, we’re focusing on mental health, sharing honest conversations alongside a couple of simple, practical techniques to help ease anxiety and bring a sense of calm when it’s needed most.As always, we hope this edition leaves you feeling uplifted, inspired, and connected to the wonderful community around you.Katy xRemember to tell our amazing local businesses, you found them in Go Local.Arch Publications Charity Partner 2026 www.mycwa.org.uk | info@mycwa.org.ukBEDROOMSBeautiful bespoke high quality fitted furniture designed to suit your needs.KITCHENS• No need to empty cupboards.• Most kitchens completed in a day.• No mess, no fuss.• All doors made to measure.A FAMILY RUN FIRM WITH 25 YEARS EXPERIENCEwww.transformyourkitchen.netCALL FOR A FREE QUOTATION ONBEFORE BEFOREAFTER AFTERTRANSFORMYOUR KITCHENUP TO 50% LESS THAN A NEW FITTED KITCHEN!5 STAR RATED01625 724 055

With a new base set to open locally soon, expanding further into areas like Congleton is a natural next step as he continues to build on a reputation shaped by trust, consistency and word of mouth. Before we spoke, I did a bit of research, and one thing immediately stood out: 271 ve-star Google reviews. It’s an impressive reection of the consistency and care that seems to run through everything they do.George is easy to talk to and refreshingly straightforward. There’s no big sales pitch, just someone who genuinely takes pride in doing a job properly. His experience goes back years, starting Katy meets... GM Windows & Doorsby Katy O’Reganstraight after leaving school when he joined his dad’s window tting business. Learning the trade from the ground up, he developed not just practical skills, but a strong understanding of how to treat customers properly. In 2018, George set up on his own with a van and a handful of local jobs. Like many small businesses, it grew through word of mouth, one recommendation leading to another.Today, GM Windows & Doors oers a full range of services including windows, doors, bifold doors, lantern roofs, integral blinds, fascias and sots, allowing homeowners to update multiple elements of their property in one go, with a consistent nish throughout. Now, with a growing team around him, including apprentices he’s trained himself, the business has developed steadily without losing that personal feel.Outside of work, George has also achieved something pretty extraordinary, winning Ironman UK in 2022. It’s an incredible accomplishment, but not something he leads with. What stood out most to me was his pride in the nished result. He told me, “Updating windows and doors can completely change the look and feel of a home, improving energy eciency and adding value. When we nish a job like that, I walk away feeling really proud.”And that really stayed with me.

There’s a quiet shift that happens, the sky softens into clearer blues, the days stretch a little longer, and the warmth feels gentle rather than overwhelming. It’s the kind of warmth that lifts your mood without asking too much in return. After the stillness of winter, everything begins to feel alive again. For me, it really begins in April, when blossom rst appears on the trees. That moment always makes me pause. It’s a small but powerful signal that brighter, Spring in Bloom at Spark LaneByKaty O’Reganmore colourful days are on their way. I nd myself breathing a little deeper, looking ahead to the layers of colour that will soon ll gardens, hedgerows and open spaces as we move toward summer.I’m no horticulturist, I wouldn’t pretend to be, but I’ve always appreciated the simple beauty of plants and owers. For real expertise, I know exactly where to turn: Brian Lowe at Spark Lane Nurseries. When I visited in early April, it was something truly special. The Rhododendrons were just on the cusp of owering, the vivid pops of Anemones caught the eye, Camassia bulbs were beginning to rise with promise, and the cool, silvery tones of Eucalyptus added depth and contrast throughout.Step inside the carefully tended polytunnels and it becomes a full sensory experience, the colours, the scents, the feeling of new growth all around you. I tried to capture it in photographs, but they never quite do it justice. Some moments are meant to be experienced. My advice, take yourself to Arclid and visit Spark Lane. I’m sure by the time you read this, Brian’s famous hanging baskets will be well underway, alongside the latest seasonal fruit and vegetables, and all the advice you need to get the very best out of your garden in time for summer.

Approaching the river Wheelock from the west (now A54) the long slope was formerly recognised as Spital Hill. Burdett’s 1777 map also oers ‘Spittle’ Hill. Despite variable (sometimes unfortunate!) spellings it may suggest the presence of some form of welcome hospitality on this well-worn road. Another road, and nearby, recalls a widespread rural activity: part-burning wood to produce charcoal. Hence we have ‘Coalpit’ Lane.Adjoining the hill, next piece of sloping land was Newton Bank, rising to meet the atter stretch of Newton Heath. Remarkable now, but Newton in the 18th century was not in but only ‘near’ Middlewich! Merchants bringing goods might encounter dwellers on the edge of town eager to buy their stock…in order to sell on at a prot. Quite possibly these travellers would be equally glad to shed their loads so soon. ‘Forestalling’- opening streetfront counters to attract passing trade – was a commonplace practice. The southerly route to and from Nantwich (A530) crossed the Wheelock at ‘Wallange Bridge’. Completing the triangle which surrounded the parish churchyard was the suitably-named Lower Street, obliterated to make room for St Michael’s Way. Like many towns Middlewich has its ‘Pepper Street’, probably for spice-selling. One of the oldest current names with an obvious meaning is Leadsmithy Street. Salt pan repairs needed? A Will can protect your new partner or spouse, your children from a prior relationship and any additional children you have with your partner. You need a Will even if your children from previous relationships are now adults. You cannot rely on the intestacy rules to fairly sort out who receives a share of your estate. The intestacy rules don’t normally leave your estate in the way you would have chosen had you made a Will. Will decision-makingIt can be hard to make Will decisions when you have children from more than one relationship or when your partner’s needs compete with your adult children’s expectations. The complexity of the decision-making highlights how much you need a Will. A Will solicitor can outline your options to help you decide what to include in your Will.Statutory intestacy rulesThe intestacy rules govern who gets your assets if you die without making a Will. Let’s talk legal... Wills when you have children from a previous relationshipByEvolve Family LawThe intestacy rules:1. Ignore unmarried partners, even if you were living together for over 20 years.2. Give second spouses the same share of your estate, whether you were married for months or many years.3. Give all your children the same amount from your estate, as the intestacy rules don’t distinguish between young children and nancially independent adult children. There is no nesse to the intestacy rules. The rules won’t be adapted to your family circumstances and therefore can create injustice and hardship.Protecting your partnerAn unmarried partner won’t receive a share of your estate or be allowed to continue living in your home after you pass away. A Will can protect your partner and reduce the risk of them suing your estate for nancial provision. Suing your estate means stress and potential personal liability for costs for the administrator sorting out your nancial aairs.Leaving assets outright to a new partner or second spouse Leaving the family home to your new partner may feel like a step too far if the relationship is relatively new or if children from a prior relationship have not been able to buy a home for themselves and your grandchildren. If you leave all your estate or your house to a new partner in your Will, there is no guarantee that your partner will follow your wishes and leave the inherited property to your children. They may remarry, so their Will won’t take eect as you anticipated, make a new Will or spend all the inherited funds.Trusts and Wills Protecting a partner, second spouse, and your children can be achieved by including a life interest trust, right of occupation or a discretionary trust in your Will.A Will solicitor can advise on estate planning and how a Will trust can help you juggle the needs of a partner or second spouse and your children.

It is about understanding how they take hold, so we can challenge them properly.Young people are learning about relationships from places that bear little resemblance to anything healthy. Boys are exposed to content that frames women as something to be judged, controlled or dominated. Girls are bombarded with messages that tell them their value lies in appearance and being chosen. Both absorb ideas about power, gender and worth long before most adults have had a meaningful conversation with them. Most adults have not been equipped for those conversations. This is not a criticism, but an observation.Parents often ask how they can stop their children seeing harmful content online. The honest answer is that they can’t. We cannot build a wall high enough. What we can do is help young people think critically about what they are seeing and create relationships in which they can talk honestly about it.That starts with conversation, not control. It starts with making sure a child knows they can say “this confused me”, “this made me uncomfortable” or “I don’t know what to think”, and be met with curiosity and support rather than judgement. That is why I produced a free guide for parents and carers on talking to children and young people about healthy and unhealthy relationships. It is not a script or a lecture, but a set of honest starting points for conversations about jealousy, rejection, pornography, sexual images, control and pressure. The aim is simple: to help parents keep the conversation open.We see the same need in schools and colleges. Through Domestic Abuse Experts, the training and consultancy arm of MyCWA, we work with teachers who know something is changing, but do not always feel equipped to respond. That is why we developed Engage: RESET, a practical healthy relationships programme for schools. It supports teachers to have real conversations about consent, online pressure, harmful attitudes and relationship dynamics. This work matters. Misogynistic behaviour cannot be addressed through a one-o school assembly about respect. It requires open conversations, equipping young people to think critically about the world around them and their own behaviour, and building a culture of accountability. If we are serious about tackling it, we need to move beyond outrage and into understanding. We need to be willing to talk openly about sex, power, rejection, respect and online inuence. We need to teach emotional literacy as a core life skill. We need to support parents to stay connected to their children, even when those conversations feel awkward. And we need to be honest that prevention is not passive. It requires adults to step in early and consistently. The most important thing I have learned in this work is that harm rarely begins where we rst notice it. By the time it becomes visible, it has usually been growing quietly for some time. This is why, when it comes to misogyny, we need to start with one simple question: why?Because if we are willing to ask it, and stay long enough to hear the answer, we stand a far better chance of preventing harm before it takes root. For a copy of the parent guide, visit www.mycwa.org.uk/helpful-resources and to nd out more about Engage: RESET, visit www.DomesticAbuseExperts.org.ukThere is a lot of noise right now about misogyny, the so-called ‘manosphere’, and what young people are consuming online. Talk to almost any teacher and they will tell you the same thing: something has shifted. You can feel it in the language young people use, in the way some boys talk about girls, and in the way girls talk about themselves. This is not abstract. It’s showing up in classrooms, corridors and relationships every day. It’s tempting to look for one obvious source to blame. One inuencer. One toxic podcast. One extreme corner of the internet. But that’s not really what’s happening. What we’re seeing is much bigger than that.Young people are growing up inside a whole ecosystem of content that is often funny, polished and wrapped in the language of self-improvement. It oers certainty, status and belonging. And for some boys and young men, it oers a simple explanation for uncomfortable feelings such as rejection, insecurity or shame. It tells them their unhappiness has a cause, and that cause is women. That message is dangerous. But it is also eective, because it meets a real need. When we see misogyny, our instinct is to respond to the behaviour. We challenge the comment, punish the incident, block the account, condemn the language. Sometimes that’s necessary. But if that is all we do, we’ll keep missing the point. For over 30 years I have worked in domestic abuse, with survivors and with those who harm. One of the clearest things this work teaches you is that behaviour does not appear out of nowhere. If we want to stop harm, we have to look underneath it. We have to ask what belief sits beneath it and what need is being met.Misogyny is no dierent. It is not a starting point. It is an outcome. It is learned, reinforced and normalised. It grows in environments where control is confused with care, where rejection is framed as humiliation rather than a normal part of life, where status is tied to dominance, and where emotional literacy is missing.Misogyny: let’s start with whyBy Saskia Lightburn-Ritchie, CEO of MyCWA (Cheshire Without Abuse)

don’t feel right, because it’s often through that process that you begin to understand what does work for you. For me, my psychiatrist introduced two alternative techniques that are better suited to how my mind works, and for the rst time, they’ve actually helped. This space, The Social Collective, is about sharing that journey. Not as an expert, but as someone who has lived it. Because what works for one person won’t always work for another, and that’s okay.If nothing else, I hope this helps you feel a little less alone, and perhaps gives you something new to try, for yourself or someone you support.Technique One: The 3-3-3 Rule (or, the one that actually helped me pause)Many of us live with a constant level of anxiety, sometimes loud and overwhelming, sometimes just quietly sitting in the background. Mine often felt like my brain was running ahead of me, thinking ten steps into the future, usually about things that hadn’t even happened. One of the rst techniques that has actually helped me interrupt that pattern is something called the 3-3-3 rule. Now, I’ll be honest, when I rst heard it, I thought, this sounds far too simple to work. But that’s kind of the point. The 3-3-3 rule is a grounding technique. It helps bring you out of your head and back into the present moment by using your senses. Here’s how it works:Look around and name 3 things you can seeNot just a quick glance, actually notice them. The colour, the shape, the detail. It could be anything: a cup, a tree, your phone.Listen for 3 things you can hearThis might be obvious sounds or really subtle ones, the hum of a fridge, distant trac, someone talking nearby.Move 3 parts of your bodyRoll your shoulders, wiggle your toes, turn your head, anything gentle. And focus on how it feels when you do it.That’s it.What I’ve learned is that anxiety thrives when all your attention is locked inside your thoughts. And scientically, we only have a limited amount of attention at any one time. So when you deliberately shift that attention to your senses, your brain has less capacity to keep feeding the anxiety. It’s also doing something else important, it’s grounding you. Anxiety often pulls us into the what ifs of the future. This brings you back to what is actually happening right now. There’s also a physical element to it. When you move your body, even slightly, you begin to release some of the tension anxiety creates. And by focusing on your surroundings, you’re Over the years, my relationship with mental health has been just that, a relationship. One that has evolved, challenged me, and, at times, completely overwhelmed me. The last three years, and particularly the last six months, have been some of the hardest, but also the most eye-opening.Like so many people, my journey started young. I remember going to my GP and trying to explain how I felt, not really having the words for it. The response, at the time, was antidepressants. That was around 35 years ago, and while everything was done with the best intentions, we now understand so much more about how our brains work.Over the years, I’ve tried it all, talking therapies, breathing techniques, coping strategies, things I was told would help if I just stuck with them. And I did try. Really try. But I often found myself asking the same question: why, after all of this, was I still struggling? What I’ve come to understand more recently is something I know will resonate with many people: for a long time, I was managing symptoms, not understanding the cause. And that changes everything. One example of this for me is breathing techniques. I was told for years to focus on my breathing, to practise regularly, to keep going, but it never seemed to help. I couldn’t understand why something that worked for so many people just didn’t work for me. It left me feeling frustrated, and at times, like I was failing.More recently, through the right support, I’ve learned that not every technique works for every person, and that’s okay. It is worth trying the dierent approaches you’re oered, even if some The Social CollectiveExploring the relationships that shape local living.signalling to your nervous system that you are safe in this moment, which helps calm the stress response. For me, this technique works best when I catch things early, when I feel that familiar rise starting. It doesn’t “x” everything, but it takes the edge o and gives me a moment of control. And sometimes, that pause is exactly what you need. Technique Two: The Self-Soothe Box (your go-to when your head won’t cooperate)This one feels a bit dierent, but it’s probably one of the most practical tools I’ve come across, and it can be adapted for both adults and childrenYou might hear it called a self-soothe box, a coping box, or even a hope box. Whatever the name, the idea is simple: it’s a collection of things that help bring you back to a calmer place when everything feels too much.Because let’s be honest, when you’re overwhelmed, your brain isn’t exactly helpful. You can’t think clearly, you can’t remember what works, and even the simplest things feel hard. That’s where this comes in.A self-soothe box is something you create when you’re feeling okay, so it’s there for you when you’re not. There’s no right or wrong way to do it. It’s completely personal. But what I’ve learned is that it works best when you include things that engage your senses.Things you can seePhotos of people you love, happy memories, notes to yourself from a calmer time, or even quotes that mean something to you. These act as gentle reminders that things can feel dierent.Things you can hearA playlist that lifts your mood, calming music, or even just having headphones ready so you don’t have to go searching when you need them.Things you can smell or tasteThis surprised me, but it works. A familiar scent, like a moisturiser or perfume, can be really grounding. Sour sweets are also great for bringing you into the present moment because they force your brain to focus.Things to distract your mindColouring, puzzles, a notebook, something simple to do with your hands. When your thoughts are looping, giving your brain something else to focus on can really help break that cycle. And this brings me back to breathing. As I mentioned before, traditional breathing techniques didn’t work for me, but that doesn’t mean breathing itself isn’t important. It just means I needed a dierent way into it.So your box can include things that support breathing in a more natural way. Something as simple as a bottle of bubbles can help, because blowing out slowly encourages a steadier breath without overthinking it.That’s the key with all of this: nding what works for youThis isn’t about xing everything. It’s about giving yourself a way back when things feel overwhelming. A starting point. A moment of calm. And sometimes, that’s more than enough to change the direction of your day.The Hidden Impact of Hearing Loss on Mental HealthImagine sitting at a table with friends or family, smiling and nodding along, but only catching fragments of the conversation. You laugh when others do, hoping it ts. At rst, it may seem like a small inconvenience, something easy to brush o. But over time, moments like this begin to accumulate, quietly reshaping how a person connects with the world around them. When we think about hearing loss, we often focus on the practical frustrations: turning up the television or asking people to repeat themselves. Yet the deeper impact is often overlooked. Hearing plays a central role in how we communicate, build relationships, and feel included. When it becomes more dicult, the eects can extend far beyond the ears, inuencing condence, mood, and overall wellbeing. In the early stages, the changes can be subtle. Background noise becomes harder to lter out, conversations in busy places feel overwhelming, and social interactions can leave a person unusually tired. It is not simply a matter of missing words; it is the increased eort required to follow what is being said. The brain begins to work harder to ll in the gaps, turning everyday communication into something demanding. This eect is called Cognitive Load. As that eort grows, many people begin to withdraw, not

Social situations that were once enjoyable can start to feel exhausting. A relaxed meal out or a family gathering may become a source of stress, leading to fewer interactions and a gradual sense of disconnection. There is also a growing understanding of the link between untreated hearing loss and depression. As social connection decreases, so too can mood and motivation. Activities that once brought enjoyment may begin to feel less accessible, not because the desire has gone, but because the experience has changed. Anxiety can also develop, particularly in everyday situations where there is a fear of mishearing or responding incorrectly. One of the most overlooked aspects is the mental strain involved. Listening becomes an active process that requires sustained concentration. Many people describe feeling drained after socialising, not because of the company, but because of the eort involved in keeping up. This hidden fatigue can aect energy levels, focus, and overall quality of life. The positive news is that hearing loss is something that can be addressed, and doing so can have a meaningful impact on both communication and mental wellbeing. At The Studio Goostrey, the focus is not just on hearing more clearly, but on helping people feel more connected and condent again. Through personalised hearing assessments, tailored hearing solutions, and ongoing support, the aim is to reduce listening eort and restore ease to everyday interactions. Equally important is recognising the emotional side of hearing loss. Open conversations, practical communication strategies, and a supportive environment can all help prevent the gradual slide into isolation. Small adjustments, from choosing quieter spaces to simply facing someone when speaking, can make a signicant dierence. Hearing loss may be invisible, but its eects are not. By understanding its wider impact and seeking the right support, it is possible to reconnect with the moments that matter most. (I didn’t think they could top my last visit, but here we are.)It’s one of those meals where you must slow down in the attempt to savour every bite, swapping thoughts on avours with your dining companion, and quietly wishing you had even a fraction of the chef’s talent in your own kitchen. Each Supper Club features a thoughtfully curated four-course menu, and you can really tell how much care goes into it. Just as you’re nishing one course, already impressed, the next arrives and somehow raises the bar again. What I absolutely love about the Supper Club is that, despite its high-end feel and elegantly presented food, it never tips into being overly posh or stuy. The atmosphere stays warm, relaxed and genuinely welcoming, with lovely sta who make you Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsfeel completely at ease from the moment you walk in.It strikes that perfect balance, special enough for an occasion, but comfortable enough that you can just enjoy it without any fuss. One of my favourite parts of the evening is being able to watch the chef at work behind the counter. There’s something so satisfying about seeing it all come together. No shortcuts, just honest, skilful cooking happening right in front of you. It adds another layer to the experience, knowing just how much care and precision goes into every single dish.A great beginning - Wow! What a way to kick things o. Sticky, sweet caramelised shallots sat on a delicate, thin pastry base, topped with salty goat’s cheese that was just starting to melt. That balance of sweet and savoury was spot on. It was one of those dishes you don’t want to end. I could quite happily have eaten a whole plate of it as a main. The sh course - This was my standout favourite. I’m a big fan of a chowder, and this one was done perfectly. A creamy, rich sauce packed with diced potato and sweetcorn, topped with a beautifully pan-fried salmon llet that aked eortlessly with the touch of a fork. Comforting, indulgent, and so good it actually made me ask the owner to add it to the everyday menu. The big event - The main course did not disappoint. Cheshire lamb cooked to a perfect blush pink - juicy, tender, and incredibly easy to cut through. It was paired with a crispy slab of potato and a vibrant pea purée, and the combination of textures and avours worked so well together. I actually found myself slowing right down, trying to make it last as long as possible.Dessert came in the form of a beautifully blowtorched slice of lemon meringue. Light, zesty and just the right level of sharpness, with fresh fruit alongside to balance everything out. It was the perfect, refreshing end to what had already been a fantastic meal. The only real problem with the Supper Club? You’ll nd yourself inventing reasons to celebrate just so you can come back again next month. We’re incredibly lucky to have a gem like this so close to Middlewich. It’s an experience that feels truly special and absolutely worth every penny.Top Info:• Supper Club runs each month, visit www.facebook.com/TheVillageKitchenHC for dates & booking• Open Tue - Sat 8.30am to 4pm for breakfast & Lunch• Church Walk, Holmes Chapel CW4 7AZYou can nd more reviews at daysoutandmealsout.com, or Facebook & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

Clearer, more condent, and better equipped to continue at home.Tribe Fitness’s Ladies’ Retreat runs from 18th–22nd September 2026, with prices from £750 and payment plans available. To nd out more or book, contact Kayleigh at Tribe Fitness via their website or social media.Because if you’re thinking that sounds amazing… it probably is.
