4Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local Middlewich! In the tapestry of life, I've rarely woven in threads of hobbies outside my professional and family commitments. When quizzed about leisure pursuits, my response has always highlighted my dedication to the magazine—a venture that transcends mere business to embody my true passion. Delving into the lives of business owners, uncovering their inspirations and aspirations, has been my way of connecting with the world.Yet, an unexpected twist in the narrative unfolded recently, introducing me to the art of felting. The idea that I, Katy, would be intricately sculpting carded wool into animal likenesses in my forties would have once seemed laughable. But here I am, completely captivated. The evenings now nd me scouring Instagram for felting marvels, amazed by artists who can replicate our furry companions with wool, capturing their essence with astonishing accuracy. Though my initial attempts have been humble, with dogs sporting slightly whimsical proportions, my enthusiasm remains undimmed. I'm committed to rening my craft, eager for the day my creations might spark joy in someone’s online wanderings. As April unfurls, bringing with it the promise of spring's rst warm embrace, you'll nd me not amidst the blossoming outdoors but in my kitchen, bathed in the brightest light, perfecting my felting technique. This dedication to a newfound passion marks a signicant chapter in my life.To all embracing their hobbies, whether indoors or out, as the season shifts—may April be a month of joy and discovery for you. I look forward to sharing more stories, inspirations, and perhaps a few felting triumphs, come May.Katy xDays Out & Meals Out reviews 8Katy meets... 8Afternoon tea at The Rabbit Hole Tea Room. This quirky little tea room is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The Rabbit Hole Tea Room is a family run business in Stoke on Trent in Staordshire and is a little hidden gem sitting opposite Stoke Minster. From the outside, it could look like any other cafe, but as you step inside, you literally travel down the rabbit hole and into the magical world of everything Alice in Wonderland. It’s so beautiful, and everywhere you look, there are tea cups, clocks, and the little white rabbits, making it such a whimsical place to visit. My sister in law booked ours for a special birthday treat for me. So she had left the details as a surprise. I was delighted to hear that you get to make personalised selections for your afternoon tea once you are there.Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out ReviewsFirst o sandwiches, you can choose up to 4 dierent llings and what sort of bread they come on. Next you choose which of the massive sponge cakes you would like. On our day there was the choice of Victoria, Raspberry and White Chocolate, Bakewell or my choice of Chocolate Orange. Finally, you had to make the dicult choice of scone. Plain, fruit or the special of the day which was blueberry and white chocolate.I loved the fact you could make these decisions as it made even more exciting and specialDrinks - I was also very interested by their tea selection. They had all the usuals of breakfast, peppermint etc. but then they had some weird and wonderful teas.Chocolate digestive, carrot cake, vanilla rooibos. I had to go for rhubarb and custard. And oh my gosh it actually tasted like rhubarb and custard. The lovely member of sta said if i didn’t like the tea I could easily change it too but that wasn’t needed as I loved it. And now I have to nd out where I can get it for home!!My sister in law ordered a coee. Both of our drinks came in gorgeous, quirky pots. Everything was quirky in factThe Afternoon Tea - Our magnicent 3-tier-stand was delivered absolutely lled to the brim and was a real feast for the eyes. With both nger sandwiches and mini rolls, crisps, salad and chutney on the rst tier. Our choice of scones, cream, jam and a slab of our sponge cake was on the 2nd tier. Finally, on top was a selection of cute and tantalizing sweet treats. This included a heart shortbread, chocolate dipped strawberry, a Rolo mun, a very cute pot of cheesecake (which was to die for and I could have eaten a pint of the stu), and a pink lemonade in he smallest glasses ever which was an obvious nod to the famous “drink me” from Alice in Wonderland. For any Afternoon Tea fan, the Rabbit Hole is an absolute must tea room. Everything about it from the gorgeously made food, the little cute details, and the friendly sta made it such a special and memorable experience. The tea room really is unique & so much eort goes into the customers’ experience that this place deserves being so busy.• Alice in Wonderland Tea Room• Open Thur-Fri 11:30-15:30. 12Lucy, the esteemed owner of Brows and Beauty, is excited to announce the relocation of her beauty studio to Cranage Hall, nestled within its Health Club. This move has been met with enthusiasm from both the club’s sta and members. Importantly, Lucy emphasizes that while the studio enjoys a prime spot within the Health Club, her comprehensive beauty services are available to all, not just club members.Boasting an impressive 13-year tenure in the beauty industry, Lucy embarked on her career with four years of intensive training to Level 4 Beauty to secure her professional qualications. Her repertoire of services is extensive, covering everything from eyebrow shaping, waxing, and lash treatments to body massages, facials, and nail care, including the application of builder gel, acrylics, and semi-permanent makeup.Lucy’s career has seen her bring her expertise to several salons, notably a signicant period at Bannatyne’s in Crewe, before taking a pivotal role managing the spa at Peckforton Castle. Here, she signicantly elevated the spa’s oerings within just 18 months. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the spa’s closure and Lucy’s redundancy, prompting a period of reection and the birth of her own business, initially from a modest lodge in her garden. Outgrowing this space, she then moved to Vivre Aesthetics in Goostrey before nally settling at Cranage Hall, a testament to her business’s growth and her aspirations for further expansion.Lucy’s journey from a garden lodge to the prestigious Cranage Hall is a story of resilience and ambition. Her clientele, Katy meets... Brows & BeautyByKaty O’Reganmany of whom have stayed loyal throughout her career, are a testament to her skill and dedication. Lucy nds profound joy in her work, whether it’s through a relaxing massage or a transformative eyebrow tint. She is particularly passionate about semi-permanent makeup, especially its impact on individuals recovering from cancer, helping them regain condence and a sense of normalcy.Lucy’s commitment to her craft extends beyond her services; she is also a fully qualied beauty instructor, oering specialised training beauty therapy. The move to Cranage Hall not only signies a new chapter for Brows and Beauty but also enables Lucy to expand her team, welcoming Eve as the latest addition with plans for further growth on the horizon. This new phase at Cranage Hall represents not just a location change, but a continued promise of excellence and personal growth for Lucy and her loyal clientele. Brows and Beauty’s journey is far from over, with this new home marking the start of an even more ourishing era.

16‘The freshness of the spring-time was never better expressed on canvas...Mr. Oakes is all brightness and crispness.’ High praise for this luminous being. But Mr Oakes? Who’s he? Which individual paid those compliments? And is there really a local link?Answers come in the person of John Wright Oakes, whose favourable review in 1879 was bestowed by art critic James Daorne. His canvas ‘The Fallow Field’ was painted way back in 1875 - but the connection is very close to home. Summer 1820 saw the birth of this future Royal Academy artist… and it occurred in rural Sproston, just east of our town. The family of John Wright Oakes had occupied Sproston House, a farmhouse on Broad Lane, for generations. Yet this talented oshoot was destined to go much farther aeld.First studying in Liverpool he began painting in the Wirral and parts of Cheshire, then north Wales, Anglesey and Isle of Man before extending his range to the dramatic terrain of Scotland and Switzerland. Exhibiting in London by the young age of 27 he was already being well received for his landscapes… mood-lled scenes of coasts, and shermen, sailboats and sunsets. Being the 19th century, of course there were enough castles, mills and romantic ruins to please Victorian viewers! I chanced upon JWO fteen years ago and in these pages gave him some exposure, which I thought he deserved. Evidently his artworld reputation continues… Plenty know this distinguished painter.Today, auction houses are still dealing in these oils and Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleywatercolours, many fetching thousands of pounds and changing hands internationally. So, did he represent his birthplace in art? It seems not. That’s perhaps a little surprising, and, for us here, a big pity. What a real piece of cultural heritage we could have displayed. Why not check out his work online? Incidentally, in1874 – just ve years before our hero was getting that glittering praise – the trades directory for this district lists another artist. That was one Percy Barber, of Brook Lane. Despite a catchy name, his career path seems more mundane. Nevertheless his work and clients could be interesting, even, or especially, if he only painted narrowboats. Should any readers happen to know, please share. Perhaps he was someone’s ancestor? Likewise, it would be a delight if a John Wright Oakes painting is encountered anywhere. Let us know!Oakes died in London, where he’d lived since he was 39, in 1887, the day before his sixty-seventh birthday. Maybe it’s about time a more unusual and stand-out son of Middlewich was championed.

19Business Update from Southway ClinicIn March, Claire Nixon celebrated the first anniversary of ANP Aesthetics at Southway Clinic, located just off Wheelock Street in Middlewich’s centre. As a client since its opening, I’ve appreciated the assistance in maintaining a youthful look. I’m selective about who I trust for my aesthetic needs, and Claire, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, embodies both the expertise and passion for safe, high-quality aesthetic treatments. The clinic itself is modern and welcoming.Over the year, Claire has aimed to transform the clinic into a hub for various specialists. It now includes services from massage therapist Lynne Scott and KD Beauty by Kristaine Dyson, known for lash extensions and microblading. Furthermore, the clinic has expanded to host the award-winning Cheshire Glow Clinic, led by Roxie Betts, whose primary location in Bicester Oxfordshire was named “Best Laser Hair Removal Nationwide.” They specialise in permanent hair removal for all skin types, including darker tones, and offer treatments for acne, rosacea, sun damage, pigmentation, and melasma. Roxie Betts is excited about their new Southway Clinic location, emphasising the convenience and confidence that come with being hair-free—no shaving irritation, rash, or ingrown hairs, and the freedom for spontaneous plans.Claire Nixon’s vision for Southway Clinic was to offer a professional yet inviting environment for quality services. From my experience, she has not only achieved this goal but continues to enhance the clinic with top industry services. Her dedication to quality and expansion has notably placed her business on the map in Cheshire. Katy O’Regan

20 The Remembering Nell Foundation was set up in memory of my daughter Nell Jones.Nell tragically lost her life in the terrorist attack on the Manchester Arena on 22nd May 2017, she was 14 years old.Nell was a very kind and considerate young girl who hated unkindness and was a loyal and trusted friend to those who were close to her.As a daughter… she was the best and I am immensely proud to say she was mine. Almost 7 years on and the pain of losing her is still as raw as it was then.As a family we wanted to create a legacy for Nell, one in which her love and kindness would continue to help others. With that in mind we set up the Remembering Nell Foundation and with the support of so many fabulous people we have been able to full so many of Nells values. We have supported the Wingate Centre with new Gym equipment for children with special needs, Crewe Buddies with days out, again for children with special needs. We provided laptops during lockdown for children who were unable to access them for home schooling and we regularly support the Wood Street Mission in Manchester with books and Christmas presents for disadvantaged families.Remembering Nell FoundationFind out more:facebook.com/rememberingnellThese are just a few of the Charities and individuals we have been able to support through the kindness of donations and fundraising and I thank everyone for their support. On the 27th April, just a few days after what would have been Nells 21st birthday we are hosting a Ball at the De Vera Cranage Hall Estate. It will be a night of fun, friendship and fundraising, but the most important thing is to celebrate Nells life and the legacy she has left with us.We are thrilled to welcome Yvette Royal as our entertainment on the night. Singing anything from Soul, Motown and Old Skool Disco to current Club Classics, her repertoire takes in artists as diverse as Aretha Franklin,Ed Sheeran,, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston and many more, she’ll be sure to have everyone up sing and dancing! We will also be holding a Silent Auction,Rae and a chance to win a fabulous Tiany bracelet in our popular box game. If anyone would like to donate a Rae/Auction prize they would be gratefully received.Tickets are on sale at £60 and include a three course meal and drinks on arrival. 24Half a year has own by since Middlewich Hearing Centre opened its doors, and I had the delightful chance to explore what they’re all about for a day. This spot is their second home, built on the love and success of the rst in Holmes Chapel. What makes both places special is their dedication to your ears’ health, oering free ear health checks that could be just the ticket if you’re worried about your hearing or think you might have a wax build-up. They use this nifty gadget called a video otoscope for a close-up look inside your ear, projecting it onto a big screen for a clear view.Amy, one of the friendly faces there, Katy meets... Middlewich Hearing CentreByKaty O’Reganwalked me through what they do, even showing me how my ear looked from the inside out! Though I was all clear, she explained how they help with ear wax removal, a common culprit behind symptoms like ringing, discomfort, and hearing loss. She warned against the temptation to use cotton buds for cleaning – apparently, they can do more harm than good. Instead, they use something called microsuction, a gentle yet eective way to clear out wax. I even got to see it in action and the before and after was nothing short of amazing.Hearing loss isn’t something they take lightly here, knowing well how it can touch every part of your life, especially as we age. They’ve got the latest tech to gure out exactly what’s going on with your hearing in a sound proof room, testing how well you can hear dierent sounds. If it turns out hearing aids might help, you’re in good hands. Middlewich Hearing Centre prides itself on being able to choose from the best out there, ensuring they nd something that ts your life perfectly. Today’s hearing aids are pretty smart, loaded with features and customizable to your specic needs. They’ve got styles and colours that are so discreet, you’ll forget they’re even there, letting you live your life without skipping a beat.Choosing to get your hearing aids from them means you’re also signing up for top-notch care afterward, making sure you’re getting the most out of them. Middlewich Hearing Centre isn’t just about tting you with a device; they’re about giving you back the full experience of sound, enriching your life in ways you might not have imagined.

32After my somewhat uncourageous rst walk in Middlewich, I was to be accompanied by my sister, her dog, and her dog’s pram for the next. Her years of living here meant I had the perfect guide for my second walk, involving leaving the tow path at one of the many lovely brick bridges and heading into town through the labyrinth of back roads, with an exhausted dog now installed in his pram. She kindly pointed out all the local landmarks, re station, schools, supermarkets, constabulary, library whilst we turned left, right, left and went down more brick lined alleyways than I think I’ve ever done in my life. I was still Girl About To wnbyHelennone the wiser as to the layout of Middlewich though, which now seemed bigger and more complex to negotiate than ever, but I had started to understand that from the tow path I could get into town by branching o at certain strategic points. It was necessity that obliged my next walks along the canal to involve turning left, instead of, what had become, my usual right. It’s apparently a lot muddier this way too. I was amused on realising that I could actually carry my removal boxes up the canal path to the Waste and Recycling Centre and dispose of them directly, on foot, before continuing my way. A walk with a purpose, perfect. I followed the canal further to where it narrowed over an iron wrought bridge, Croxton Aqueduct, and that’s where the serious mud started. The tow path as such had disappeared and left a track which now had to be negotiated either ideally with wellington boots, with a decent grip, or for the condent and unwobbly a walk along the stone lined edge of the water. I opted for mud. It was a blustery day and I denitely I wasn’t feeling up to the risk of a cold plunge. That’s when I ventured upon ‘The Flashes’ again. I’d been here once before, but it was the rst time I’d come by myself, and I love this place. I’ve now been passed it many times and I’ve regularly seen a goose standing on the mini island in the middle. It’s a real surprise the rst time you reach it and a sort of milestone along the canal in that direction for further walks.

36Nestled in the heart of Congleton lies a treasure trove of history: Salford Mill, an enchanting listed building on Milk Street. Here, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life, I had the pleasure of meeting Janet, the vibrant owner of Jantex, a business that has been a xture in the mill since 1975.Finding Jantex is a straightforward aair: just o Rood Hill, follow Milk Street until you reach the mill, which boasts ample parking—a rarity in town. According to its Wikipedia page, Salford Mill has quite the story to tell. Originally built for silk production by Nathaniel Barton, it later transformed into a fustian mill under Edward Knapper’s ownership. Cameron’s Knitwear Ltd also called it home before relocating to GRANTOWN-ON-SPEY in 1969.But what truly piques curiosity are the mill’s connections to historical gures like suragist Elizabeth Wolstenholme. Owned by her husband, Mr. Elmys, the mill became a platform for unconventional ideas. When Charles Bradshaw and Amie Bessant, leaders Katy meets... Jantexby Katyof the British Atheist Society, were denied a space in the town hall, Mr. Elmys oered them a platform at the mill. This gesture stirred up controversy, leading to protests marked by loud voices and thrown stones—a testament to the clash of ideologies in a changing world.Jantex holds a special place in the heart of Congleton, tracing its roots back to Bernard McDonough, Janet’s father. A seasoned entrepreneur in the textile industry, Bernard had already left his mark with another shop in town, named after his wife, Dorothy. However, the allure of Salford Mill beckoned, oering a larger space to expand his business. Today, three oors of the mill are brimming with a vast array of stock, inviting customers to browse and discover treasures anew.As you step into Jantex, you’re greeted by a wide selection of ooring on the ground oor. From cozy carpets in an array of materials, styles, and colours to sleek wooden and vinyl options, there’s something to suit every taste and space. What sets Jantex apart is their in-house installation team, ensuring a smooth process from start to nish. With samples available for a hands-on experience, customers can envision how the ooring will look and feel in their homes. Jantex also oers a free measuring service and allows customers to borrow samples, making the decision-making process hassle-free.One of the standout features of Jantex is the remarkable team led by Janet. As I stepped into the building, I was warmly greeted by Dave Mould, a stalwart of the company for an impressive 35 years. Starting as a tter, Dave now oversees the retail side of the business, drawing upon decades of experience to provide invaluable advice and guidance to customers. Alongside Dave, Lee Mc Gough serves as the main surveyor and project manager, ensuring smooth operations and awless execution. Behind the scenes, Claire Taylor and Tracey Page keep things running like clockwork. Janet herself is a true embodiment of passion

for her work. Despite originally not intending to join the family business, she found herself drawn in after her father fell ill. Armed with a degree in Economics, Janet temporarily stepped in, only to discover a deep-seated love for the industry. It’s evident from speaking with her that Janet is not just dedicated to her job, but genuinely passionate about it.Describing the plethora of fabrics gracing the second oor of Salford Mill is no easy task. My husband and I recently dedicated an entire afternoon to perusing the extensive collection, searching for the ideal material to upholster a footstool. Though we only required a mere meter square, Janet graciously assisted us in combing through countless sample books, meticulously spreading them out until we discovered the perfect fabric. With her wealth of knowledge on durability, we felt condent in our selection.Excitedly, we anticipate repeating this delightful experience when selecting fabrics for our new lounge curtains. However, the intricacies of curtain-making exceed my skill set. Thankfully, Jantex oers a solution, providing expert curtain-making services along with matching tiebacks and cushions. They even supply and t poles or tacks, ensuring a seamless transformation of our space. The range of fabrics available on the second oor of Jantex is truly impressive, boasting the latest styles from renowned suppliers. Moreover, being part of a national buying group comprising over a hundred other independent retailers, Jantex can oer competitive pricing comparable to larger chains. In addition to fabrics, Jantex also oers an impressive selection of window blinds, including roller blinds, roman blinds, vertical blinds, venetian blinds, panel blinds, Perfect Fit® blinds, pleated blinds, and wooden blinds. Their in-house team can expertly measure and t these blinds to perfection. As Janet converses with customers, her warmth and kindness shine through. Amidst discussions, she shares her unexpected hobby of raising Highland Cows with her partner, a charming revelation that reects her vibrant spirit.Jantex stands as a beacon of quality, passion, and personalised service within the historic connes of Salford Mill. Janet and her team embody the spirit of dedication and excellence, ensuring that every customer’s experience is nothing short of exceptional. As we bid farewell to Janet and Jantex, we leave with a newfound appreciation for the intersection of history, craftsmanship, and community, each thread woven seamlessly within the fabric of this extraordinary establishment.

It might make some of you chuckle to know that I used to be a lollipop lady, not for a school, but for a council contracted rm doing stop and go trac control during road maintenance. Stop, go, stop, go for hours on end, in hindsight it’s a surprise really that my mental breakdown didn’t happen sooner in my working life. On my rst day I was handed a pair of steel toe capped boots, uorescent waterproof trousers, a coat and a hard hat. All at no expense to myself.PPER 1992 places a duty on every employer in Great Britain to ensure that suitable PPE is provided to ‘employees’ who may be exposed to a risk to their health or safety while at work. Now if you’d have told a contractor 40 years ago that they’d be legally responsible for providing me with boots to wear for work you can imagine what the reaction might have been. But ultimately, that initial nancial outlay has saved a huge amount of money and harm to people in the long term by preventing accidents and injuries at work. Speculate to accumulate and all that. Whilst the health and safety at work act focuses primarily on the prevention of physical injuries, there is an increasing focus on the provision of mental health in the workplace. Mental ill health costs the U.K. economy £105.2 billion each year, so you can bet there’ll be more legislation coming soon. It’s always been within our vision to provide businesses with a Glow sticks and Paying it forwardVicky,Bridging The Gap Mind Mattersproactive option for mental health support for employees, but until recently we struggled to nd a way to package it that aligned with our values. Most corporate providers will oer dierent levels of “schemes” and charge based on the number of employees. Many businesses I spoke to said that often not many employees actually engaged with the services, whether that’s due to not many people needing them (unlikely!), an issue with stigma and accessibility, or the services on oer being suboptimal I can’t say. But ultimately it means large prots for the provider, and employees left feeling unsupported by an employer who is trying to do their best. Then one day I was in a local cafe getting drink, and I saw the pay it forward board. Light bulb moment. If I’d still been wearing those hi-viz trousers I’d have easily been confused for a glow stick. The pay it forward board allows you to pay for a coee, write it on a post it note, like a voucher and stick it on the board. Then someone local who is struggling to aord can get a warm drink. The BTG pay it forward program means that a company can fund a certain amount of places on a program, if the employees need them that’s great, they’ll get proper hands on mental health care, rapidly accessible at a time and place convenient for them, they’ll develop long term coping skills plus new healthy lifestyle habits. If any funded places aren’t needed by employees we open these places to people locally who are desperate for support but cannot aord it. This way the money doesn’t line a CEO’s pocket, it’s fed back into the local community. As a business the impact of a good reputation within your local community cannot be underestimated. A good deed will come back to you 100x over. I don’t have enough words in this article to fully explore the implications of improved mental health amongst a local population but they are vast. The donations start at £62.50 per month making it aordable for any business to show they care. Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.

44In the last edition of Go Local we looked at the old signal box sign from Middlewich station which was rescued when the box closed in 1980 and subsequently made its way back to Middlewich courtesy of George Dean and his son Alan.We ended that article by pointing out that there were originally two signs, one on each end of the signal box, and wondered whatever happened to the other one.Well, that particular mystery has been solved in ne style by keen Go Local reader Audrey Taylor who was delighted to nd the missing sign at the Kidderminster Railway Museum. Audrey couldn’t resist taking a photo of ‘our sign’ making a splash of colour among the largely monochrome signs from the likes of CRAVEN ARMS, DUNSLOW, NEWARK CROSSING, MELTON EAST AND Middlewich’smemoriesByDave RobertsMELTON WEST, and the splendidly named PONTARDULAIS JUNCTION NORTH SIGNAL BOX. Audrey’s photo is reproduced here with permission. Many thanks to her for setting our minds at rest. The Kidderminster Railway Museum is well worth a visit. It was founded by members of the preserved Severn Valley Railway in 1990 and is housed in a former Great Western Railway warehouse built in 1878,Careful study of old photos shows us the Kidderminster sign is the one that was axed to the Northwich end of the signal box.So what of ‘our’ sign which we last saw in the care of a former, and now sadly deceased, member of the Rail Link Campaign?Enquiries reveal that it’s being well looked after by a railwayman with connections with the Heritage Centre at Crewe. It’s reassuring to know that it is still in safe hands. Thanks are due to Borough Councillor Garnet Marshall who has been investigating this on our behalf.Meanwhile the Sandbach-Middlewich-Northwich railway itself continues to earn its living, with freight trains passing through every day.The re-opening of the line to passengers is now in the hands of a group of interested parties including the Department of Transport, Cheshire East and Cheshire West councils and the Cheshire & Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. The case for a new passenger service on the Middlewich line was proved many years ago, but proving a case and getting people to actually push the scheme forward are two very dierent things.
