4Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local Middlewich!Welcome to the September edition of Go Local Middlewich!I hope you had a wonderful summer, lled with good times spent with your neighbours, friends, and family. As the weeks have passed, I’ve found myself reecting on how quickly time seems to be ying by since the days of COVID—though maybe that's just a sign of getting older! My son is about to start his nal year of high school, and I’m feeling a whirlwind of emotions. As a parent, there’s always the worry about exams and the future. This moment feels like such a signicant milestone—up until now, his path has been somewhat predetermined, but now he’s at the crossroads of choosing whether to dive into a career or continue his studies. Above all, I just want him to nd happiness and success, whatever that may look like for him. Success isn’t about becoming a millionaire; it’s about nding joy in what you do. I always remind him that life doesn’t have to be meticulously planned out right now. There’s plenty of room to adapt, change direction, or even retrain as life unfolds.I speak from experience—my career path has been anything but linear. I started out in health and social care, spent nearly two decades as a radio presenter, served as a police ocer, set up a printing business, and now, I’m running Go Local! And believe it or not, I’m training for something new again—but I’ll share more about that in the future! In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this edition, lled with local businesses, services, and articles that I think you’ll nd interesting. Until next time! Making the most of Summer Holidays... 8Walking for Happiness and Charity 12Days Out & Meals Out reviews... Solomon's Temple 16Middlewich Town Council news 20Katy meets... 8Admittedly, I don’t have children. So, some could say that I’m not the best qualied to talk about them, especially when it comes to summer holidays. I do have a dog though, who I absolutely adore. However, he is very partial to interrupting me just as I’m about to head onto a teams call and his mad 20 minutes barking at himself in the mirror is a particular highlight at 10.30 every morning. The point is – we all have distractions. We all have people and things in our lives that sometimes make that full day’s work a hard thing and that’s especially true in the summer. Juggling work with a little person whose whole purpose for six weeks is not to work means it is a game of compromise.Establishing some kind of structured day which starts and ends the same way is a start. Let your children know how it usually works when you work from home – when breaks usually happen and how long for and when lunch usually is. That can establish some boundaries in terms of when you’ll typically be available. Of course, whilst this establishes some structure, it doesn’t ll a child’s day. You’ll no doubt know a child likes to be entertained. Every child is dierent but planning activities or trying to have times in a day set aside for playing together can also help add a little more structure. Before long, you’ll hopefully notice that those boundaries have helped form some sort of Making the most of Summer Holidays…ByRich Wilcockroutine that makes sense to you and your children.Working from home also means that distractions are not far away. I found myself the other watching the Olympic archery competition for a solid twenty minutes. But those distractions are even worse in the summer holidays. However, dressing for work in the morning gives a clear visual indication that it is a day for work and can help signify it isn’t a day for multiple distractions.Technology can be a lifesaver when working from home with children around. Of course, during my summer holidays some years ago, the TV or the Playstation was the usual technological distraction. But we live in a much more varied world nowadays and online learning platforms, educational apps, and a multitude of streaming services are available. With all this choice, it can be easy to just let it be and let technology rule your child’s day. So, it can be important to ensure that usual rules apply with it (whatever it is in your household). This in itself helps keep that routine in place and makes it easier when they do go back to school. There are other ways of ensuring summer holidays are not an absolute nightmare for all involved. If your work allows it (and most do nowadays) look at having exitime and working unconventional hours if needs be.Remember, things won’t always go according to plan. There will be days when work takes precedence, and others when family time is paramount. Be exible and adaptable, and don’t be afraid to ask for help when needed. Some of my fondest memories of childhood are from my summer holidays and I’m sure if you cast your mind back, they will be for you as well. Working from home during the summer holidays can be challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to create lasting memories with your family while still maintaining your career. By setting boundaries, involving your kids, and leveraging technology you can navigate this busy time with relative ease.

12For three decades Hil, founder of trundl, the unique UK walking for charity app, has lived in the Cheshire region and enjoyed many hours exploring its natural beauty. However, in her late forties, circumstances changed dramatically. Not only did she require urgent surgery on a compressed spinal cord, in 2021 she learned that her painful legs were a sign of undiagnosed hip-dysplasia. Finding herself thus unable to walk long distances quite literally changed Hil’s life. Always one to look for the positive, Hil’s slower walks around Holmes Chapel brought a new perspective on the physical and mental health benets that short walks can bring. This triggered the thought: What if an everyday walk could make a social dierence and what Walking for Happiness and CharityByHilary Mines, Founder of Trundlgreater impact could we all achieve together? In 2022, this idea came to life in the walking for charity app, trundl. But it stands on the shoulders of a lot of planning, as Hil shared with us:“I’ve long been passionate about a business idea that, in an aordable way, could motivate people to be active outdoors for their own health, while at the same time supporting UK charities. With a membership of just £3.99 per month, by pressing “Go trundling” on the app, everyday walks, dog-walks and hikes add up on the app’s community total, with no need to donate or raise funds yourself. When the set distance targets are met, we donate 30% of total monthly income to a rotation of charities we walk for. Invited brand partners match donations and extend oers to members. Our core charities are: National Parks; Dogs-for-Autism; Ramblers; Move Against Cancer; The Tree Council; Cheshire and Sussex Wildlife Trusts and Trussell TrustIt’s a win-win for all. Members gain a strong sense of physical and social good from tracking activity and personal charity impact. And through the CO2 Saver feature they can see the carbon they’re saving when they walk rather than drive. In return, charities are supported and brand partners bring oers and sponsorship. Importantly, there’s no advertising or data sharing. Ultimately, trundl’s all about the power of one person multiplied thousands of times to make a huge dierence to people’s lives and the natural spaces we love. We just need to spread the word and that’s why we’re so grateful that Go Local Middlewich have invited us to talk here”With The Peak District, numerous beauty spots and lovely villages and towns on our doorstep, this area is undoubtedly a hiker’s paradise. But it also oers many options to those who want shorter, more accessible walks. ‘’The one-to-two-mile walks, while gentler on my poorly hips, still bring amazing mental and physical benets. Particularly when I know each walk turns into a donation’’ nishes Hil ‘

At the summit of Grin Low Hill, in the Victorian spa town of Buxton stands Solomon’s Temple. It is just a 20 minute walk from Poole’s Cavern in Buxton Country Park and has impressive views of the town below and the rolling Derbyshire countryside. A great family friendly walk which is easy to follow and has fun sculptures to ne and a tower to climb. After a tour of Poole’s Cavern we grabbed our picnic from the car and set o for a lovely walk into Buxton Country Park. We picked up a free trail map from the visitors centre which shows three woodland trail footpaths leading to the summit of Grin Low and Solomon’s Temple viewpoint. We followed the yellow Geology Trail with fossil sculpture way markers. If you want more of a walk then follow the longer blue quarry view trail. Starting from the car park keep the visitor centre on your right continue along the tarmac path, up to a carved wooden picture and take the steps to the right. At the top of the steps turn left signed Solomon’s Temple. Continue along this path ignoring the paths that go o to the left. Along this path you will meet Charlie the Limeburner, a wooden sculpture. At the end of the path go through the gate in the wall and head towards the temple which you can clearly see in the distance. It’s a bit of an uneven climb to the temple with uneven ground and Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsno clear path but just keep walking up hill till you reach Solomon’s Temple, you can’t get lost. At Solomon’s Temple: You can climb up the tower but the steps are quite small, steep and worn so please take care. Once at the top you can enjoy some spectacular views across the High Peak.On a clear day you can see for 24 km (15 miles). On the horizon, look out for Mam Tor at Castleton, and Kinder Scout, which at 636m (2,088ft) - which is the highest point in Derbyshire and the Peak District.Walking to a certain point, like this walk, is great for children as they can see where they are walking to for a lot of the walk and they get that sense of achievement when they reach the temple. Its fun to climb up the steps to the top and look down across the hill. We chose to eat our picnic sat on some of the big rocks just by the temple. It was a lovely spot to sit, eat and rest after our climb.History of Solomon’s Temple: The tower itself was built in 1896 to replace an earlier structure constructed by Solomon Mycock a local farmer and landowner. Although not in the true spirit of a folly, that is having no practical purpose whatsoever, Solomon’s Temple actually occupies a site of ancient signicance. It rises from the centre of an ancient burial mound, and during the tower’s construction an archaeological dig here revealed several Bronze Age skeletons from the ‘Beaker’ period, along with later Roman items.• 3 Routes to Solomon’s Temple, 2.5km Circular walk • Suitable for all ages as not a long walk• Easy to follow route• Woodland Sculpture Trail• Car park at Poole’s Caverns £2 for 3 hours, £3 all day. • Cafe at Visitor Centre, Picnic Area & Toilets• Go Ape • Green Ln, Buxton SK17 9DH • Find out more at: poolescavern.co.ukYou can nd more reviews at daysoutandmealsout.com, Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate has risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may take up to 2 years. It’s Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. By putting o arranging our aairs we run the risk of running out of time, or in the event of illness, seeing our options dramatically reduced. Why Sanctuary Tax & Trust Services? With over 20 years of experience in Estate and Inheritance planning we have helped families in the area protect their assets and plan their inheritance in the most cost-eective way. While the individual family’s circumstance may vary, the one constant is that each family aims to provide the maximum amount of inheritance possible without the stress of complex legal jargon.

20Middlewich Town Council newsWhat is Section 106 Cllr Garnet Marshall explains, it is a Section of the revised Town and Country Planning Act 1990. It enables Local Authorities in England to enter into legally binding agreements with Developers for nancial contributions towards Health Services, Education, Road and Travel infrastructure, public amenities and bio-diversity gain projects. Put simply, the Act States Section 106 contributions from Developers are to make Unacceptable Developments Acceptable. They are to mitigate the inconvenience that the new development will bring to the Town in general and a neighbourhood in particular. They can take many months, sometimes years to negotiate and once signed must only be used for the intended plan they cannot be transferred but the developer can pull them back if they are not used within a specied time. An example of the wording in a Sectiom106 agreement is set out below.‘£14,019 Amenity Greenspace contribution - comprising £2384 for footpath works around existing amenity greenspace at Harbutts eld and/or for upgrading existing amenity greenspace at Fountain elds, Middlewich plus £11635 towards the future maintenance of the enhanced area’s’There will be a direct corelation between the size and scale of development and the amount monetary value set aside for each item. There will be ‘trigger’ points for the release of such funds. (For instance, in the case of new housing developments there could a clause to state the funds will be released upon the sale of the 40th Property for example)In most cases funds are transferred in once the Borough Council have given consent for the development to take place. They are held on account and are not taken to be Council Reserves. Interest is added periodically. There is another source of funding that can be negotiated instead of S106. It’s called the Community Infrastructure Levy, (CIL) it’s a at rate charge which is not specic to any of the above and allows Town Councils far more exibility to spend it as it sees t. It can be 15% higher that S106 but in order to qualify for CIL the Town Must have a fully ratied Neighbourhood Plan which Middlewich doesn’t have.Over the past twelve months a root and branch investigation has been undertaken by the CEC Audit and Governance committee on the workings of Section 106. A report which is and will remain condential recommended certain changes to how it should operate. Many of these are no in place including a Software system which will make it far easier for members to access the information about their own wards.Section 106 allocations unspent for Middlewich amount to around £772,342.69. Some of these are residual amounts left over after projects that have been completed. Others are much larger amounts set aside many years ago and for reasons that are not known no draw down applications exist. It could be that some were put forward, maybe have been referred for not tting the strict usage criteria and then over the passage of time and maybe due to a change of council were not followed up. There is no implied criticism here of sta or councillors past or present. But the new software will allow easier access and therefor less risk of this happening again. I often get asked when will we see the 106 monies, we are due and will we have a say in how they are spent? I hope the above update and explanation answers these questions. But in a nutshell, we will never see the money in our town council bank account and to a greater extent how it is spent has already been laid out in the Section 106 agreement document. To end on a positive note the town council have agreed to refurbish the CIVIC HALL using Section 106 funds amounting to £225.750.00 that were set aside in 2003 for and I quote from the agreement;‘The provision of new community facilities in Middlewich or by extending and/or improving existing community facilities in Middlewich in either case to alleviate the additional pressure that will be placed on existing community facilities in Middlewich as a result of the proposed development’.The development was what has become known as the ‘Cow Estate’ o Centurion Way. Planning Reference 33929/3 Oct-02. Going forward the Finance Committee will be given a detailed report of the out-standing funds and details of what they can and cannot be used for. Then a report will be brought to full council in September. For more information contact Cllr Garnet Marshall – GarnetMarshall@cheshireeast.gov.ukContacting Middlewich Town CouncilTown Hall, Victoria Building, Lewin Street, Middlewich CW10 9AS01606 833434middlewich.org.ukadmin@middlewich.org.uk

24as we were. They genuinely wanted what was best for him, and their compassion and professionalism never wavered. When the heartbreaking day came to say goodbye to Jake, the team’s support and impeccable care made an incredibly dicult time just a little more bearable. We took comfort in knowing that, throughout the entire journey, Jake’s needs were always the top priority for James and the team, and they did everything possible to make his nal days as peaceful as they could be.Goostrey Lane Vets has certainly grown since those early days. I had the opportunity to interview James when the practice rst opened, and I recall him sharing his vision of expanding the team by bringing in new vets to work alongside him. That vision has become a reality, with Zeke joining last year while completing his qualications, and more recently, the addition of Vet Emily. James and Emily’s journey together goes back 20 years when they were both studying to become vets at the University of Liverpool. Their shared passion for veterinary medicine even extended beyond the classroom, as they were atmates during their time at university. Now, after two decades of friendship and professional growth, they nd themselves working side by side once again, bringing their combined expertise and camaraderie to the clients of Goostrey Lane Vets. It’s not just a cliché to say that your pet is at the heart of everything Goostrey Lane Vets does—I can vouch for that When Goostrey Lane Vets opened two and a half years ago, we decided to move our pups there, and more recently, we found ourselves spending a signicant amount of time at the clinic. Our dog Jake was diagnosed with cancer, and as the devastating news began to sink in, we were grateful to have Vet James by our side, crafting a plan with Jake’s well-being at the forefront. James used every bit of his expertise to combat the aggressive disease that was threatening to take our beloved dog from us.During the six-month battle, James and the entire team at Goostrey Lane Vets were as dedicated to Jake’s care Katy meets... Goostrey Lane Vetsby Katy O’Reganfrom personal experience. Being an independent practice, they aren’t bound by rigid processes or pressured by a head oce to push unnecessary services or insurances. This independence allows them to take a more holistic approach to pet care, focusing solely on what’s best for their patients without any outside inuence. This commitment to genuine care is a big part of why they’ve seen such growth, but James is keenly aware of the need to maintain a balance. He’s committed to providing appointments that are thorough and unrushed, ensuring that each visit gets the attention it deserves. To achieve this, James carefully manages the number of clients they take on, striving to keep the balance just right between the number of vets and the needs of their clients. This thoughtful approach ensures that the quality of care remains high, even as the practice continues to grow.A new benet for clients at Goostrey Lane Vets is the introduction of Vidivet, a service that is typically paid for but is now oered free of charge to registered clients. Vidivet provides peace of mind by oering 24/7 access to professional advice, taking away the worries that often arise when something seems o with our pets outside of regular hours. Whether by call, text, or video chat, you can reach out to Vidivet for guidance on any concerns you might have. If you’re unsure whether a trip to the out-of-hours vet is necessary, Vidivet can help triage the situation, ensuring you get qualied advice when you need it most.As Goostrey Lane Vets enters an exciting new phase, with Emily joining the team and the addition of Vidivet to their services, I asked James what the future holds. He shared his ambition to establish an out-of-hours service right within their building. With ample space for expansion, James sees the benet of oering this service on-site, whether it’s something he manages himself or brings in an independent vet to oversee. He believes it would be an invaluable resource for all of his clients to have this service available in the same location. No matter what direction James takes Goostrey Lane Vets in over the next few years, he’s thankful to have his dedicated team by his side. With John, his right-hand man, Katie, the practice manager, and nurses Megan, Mya, and Evie, along with fellow vets Emily and Zeke, the practice is well-positioned for continued success. And as their journey progresses, I look forward to returning to share their successes and continue to follow their growth.

28Like all old towns Middlewich has certain areas which, to sensitive people, can have a disturbing and restless atmosphere about them.A recent discussion on Facebook brought up the subject of Hannah’s Walk which runs from St Ann’s Road to a point on the Shropshire Union Canal’s Middlewich Branch close to the aqueduct in Nantwich Road, scene of the canal breach in March 2018. The story of Hannah is really more of a vague folk tale, its details lost in the mists of time. The story I grew up with was that Hannah was a servant girl at the nearby Newton Hall who fell into the clutches of one of the younger sons of the landed gentry who lived there. Poor Hannah was ‘wronged’ by this cold, callous man MiddlewichmemoriesByDave Robertsand, feeling herself in disgrace, ed from the scene of her ‘downfall’ along the public footpath which now bears her name, threw herself into the canal and drowned.Legend has it that Hannah’s soul has, since that day, never been at peace and she regularly repeats her last desperate walk down the footpath in ghostly form.I’ve never seen the ghost of the unfortunate Hannah but during this Facebook discussion I did say that there was an uncanny atmosphere in Hannah’s Walk, particularly at the canal end, and one lady remarked that her dog always behaved in a strange way at that end of the footpath. Animals, of course, are closer to the spirit world than we are, and I wonder if that lady’s dog knows more about the wretched Hannah and her earthbound troubles and travails than any of us.Not far away along Nantwich Road is Mill Lane, which leads down to the River Wheelock and the weir which once powered Stanthorne Mill. You get an uneasy feeling standing on the bridge across the weir. As children we were told about a motorcyclist losing his life in the weir when his brakes failed as he came down the steep slope of Mill Lane. In 2013 when I published an article in the Middlewich Diary about the weir, Geo Edwards, who had been researching the accident, told us that the motorcyclistwas William Rigby, who lived at the Mill. The accident happened in 1910 and William’s body was found in the weir by his brother. To this day that little bridge and its surroundings have an air of melancholy about them.

I am hoping to cover dierent types of walks from easy strolls to more adventurous hikes, so there is something for everyone. In each article I am hoping to give you some information regarding parking, toilets and cafes. As someone who nearly always wants to spend a penny before I set o, I realised for many readers this will be a positive contribution! However, please don’t hold me responsible for locked toilets or closed cafes as we trundl together through the coming months!Biddulph Grange Country Park, Grange Road, Biddulph ST8 7TZParking / Toilets /Café Biddulph Grange is signposted from the A527 Stoke-on-Trent to Congleton Road, 1 mile north of Biddulph. There is parking for 40 cars. Why not come by bike?It is close to the Biddulph Valley Way cycle route from Congleton or Tunstall. Turn for the Country Park at Baileys Bank or Marsh Green Road. The park is on a hillside and although there is wheelchair access in certain parts of the park, it would be worth checking rst before setting o. The Staordshire Wildlife Trust website for Biddulph Grange gives you all the info you need to plan your trip.I have passed the sign for Biddulph Grange Country Park many times and it was only last year that I went to visit with my family. I would highly recommend a visit regardless of your age. Managed by Staordshire Wildlife Trust, country park has a rich history intertwined with the famous Biddulph Walks...Biddulph Grange Country ParkByHilary Mines, Founder of TrundlGrange Garden which is just next door. Designed by Victorian industrialists James Bateman and Robert Heath, the garden is a National Trust property. You could easily combine the gardens and the park into a full day out but the adjoining country park, referred to in this article, is free and oers lots of options for exploring on its own. The park can cater for all tness levels. There are atter more accessible routes, but equally you can climb up and give your lungs and heart a good workout taking the trails through the woods and up to the top with lovely views out across the countryside. Wear comfy walking shoes or boots and you won’t go wrong. The café is large with plenty of seating and there are areas where you can picnic too. All in all, this is a lovely place to visit whether for a quick 20 minute stroll if you are more local, or a full day out exploring the park and surrounding area. There are some lovely surprises when you start to explore the trails but I won’t spoil those, I’ll leave you to explore those yourselves.Happy trundling everyone.

40Here’s a period snapshot of our town… it seems to come from a dierent world. Well, at nearly 90 years ago it was. June 1935: on the market was a rather substantial property with some Classical features. Roman? No. Greek-inspired? Most denitely. Let’s take a closer peek…Middlewich then was promoted as being ‘in the heart of Cheshire’s hunting country’. Oh, and also on oer was ‘good shooting’. Dubious delights now but this country estate was rst created just over two hundred years ago, in a very rural setting outside town to the southwest. Nowadays it’s rmly part of the urban fabric. The family residence was erected likely around the 1830’s, but regularly modernised. Known variously as the Manor House, and also Manor Hall, Newton (because it was in that township, and technically not in Middlewich) it’s also been Newton Manor, or simply The Manor. Curious to see inside? Accommodation arrangements sound lavish, with no fewer than nine principal bedrooms, four bathrooms and, for that all-important entertaining or relaxing, three reception rooms. Of course, to help things run smoothly were rooms (of an unstated Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleynumber) for servants. Equally stylish was the exterior. Large-windowed parlours looked over extensive grounds. Both horses and vehicles used the semi-circular drive, requiring stabling and garaging advertised as ‘splendid’. Beyond that were ‘well-kept lawns and picturesque gardens’.So what is the Greek connection, and why? The south elevation showcases a curved portico of four white uted Ionic columns, correctly topped with distinctive twin coils. Other ornamentation was that very much on-trend design element called ‘Greek Key’ - a band of repeating linked-squares. Since the mid-18th century and well into the nineteenth, exciting new fashions were inuencing architecture. Yet these were very backward-looking… Recent discoveries from antiquity combined with an increase in cultural tourism had stimulated interest in the classical world. Contemporary taste was for all things Greek. The resulting neoclassical style - ‘Greek Revival’ – was applied to everything from great public institutions to private dwellings for the rich.Today’s surroundings and street plan, e.g. Old Gate Close, still carry interesting echoes of this former grand country house. The oak-lined avenue for carriages? Now Greendale Drive and Kerridge Close. On Nantwich Road is the former lodge. Continuing now as an elderly care facility, this piece of landscape preserves a really special aspect of our town’s heritage. One last thing to mention…at the time of the advert in the summer of 1935 the property was available to let. Annual rent? £350 per annum. It really was a dierent world!
