As the days grow shorter, and evenings longer, we might find ourselves contemplating the switch of our heaters or wrapping ourselves in an extra cozy sweater. The summer, with its ever-fluctuating temperament – scorching sun one day and chilly rain the next – whizzed past us, leaving us all wondering: what surprises might winter hold this year?In this edition, we’ve curated a cornucopia of stories and features for our loyal readers. I had the pleasure of visiting St Luke’s newly refurbished store, a space where every corner tells a tale. The dedication of the team behind St Luke’s is heartwarming, and our feature on this offers an intimate glimpse. Moreover, I had a delightful conversation with Colette, the dynamic force behind the Middlewich branch of Coulby Conduct. It's not just an estate agency; it’s a cornerstone of our community. Celebrating a milestone of 25 years, Coulby Conduct embodies the spirit of Middlewich, and we delve into its journey in this edition. And for those with a penchant for natural beauty, you'll be enchanted by our feature on a blossoming new florist based at Hopley House. Their love for flowers and the art of arranging them is sure to inspire you. Now, before you immerse yourself in the pages, let me highlight an event that deserves a red circle on your calendar: The Middlewich Beer and Cider Festival 2023! Falling on the 27th and 28th of October, this isn't just any festival. It marks two decades of this much-loved tradition. Organised with passion by the Middlewich and District Round Table, this year promises a weekend brimming with festivity, entertainment, and yes, an enticing array of beers and ciders! 01477 518 252 • golocalmiddlewich.comfor advertising information www.archpublications.comKaRemember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local!Go Local Middlewich is part ofArch Publications Charity Partner 2023/24

8Business update... NMCNEUROMUSCULAR CENTRE (NMC) is a charity based in Cheshire that offers vital services and support to people and families affected by neuromuscular conditions, such as muscular dystrophy. These conditions, which are all characterized by progressive muscle wasting, have a huge impact on the lives of the people that live with them. But, at NMC, we help people focus on what they can do and what they want to achieve. We aim to help people find ways to reach their full potential and achieve optimal wellbeing. We are constantly looking for ways to provide new opportunities for people with these conditions, with a focus on employment, volunteering and personal development.Last year, we secured funding to buy a laser engraver and cutting machine. This is allowing us to grow our social enterprise; NMC Design+Print and we are very happy to have launched NMC Laser Creations! This new arm of the business focuses on the design, making and selling of laser cut and engraved products to raise funds for NMC, as well as offering bespoke signage, plaques, promotional merchandise, name badges, wedding stationery and more for both businesses, charities and individual customers. This has already allowed us to employ a new permanent member of staff and a volunteer who both have muscular dystrophy. As the business grows, we hope to create more roles and job opportunities to give more people access to work. One member of staff recently explained, ‘After leaving my old job due to my disability I was stuck at home worrying about what my future would hold. NMC Design+Print provided me with an opportunity to work with an amazing team.’It’s been an exciting time for the team, who are relishing the opportunity to be more creative and work on self-led designs and products, as well as continuing to work on customer briefs. It has provided a great opportunity to get out and about and meet people from the local community too! The team has been setting up stalls at local craft markets, across Cheshire, making sales in aid of NMC. They are always looking for new opportunities to represent the charity, support local events and show off new products.Alison Evans, NeuroMuscular Centre (NMC)If you’d like to support NMC Laser Creations, please visit the Etsy store: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/NMCDesignAndPrintOr contact Ali to discuss bespoke jobs for your organisation or personal projects and events. We can engrave wood, plastics, coated metals, glass and card! alison-evans@nmcentre.comAll profits go towards the NeuroMuscular Centre and help the charity continue to provide physiotherapy, support, advice, training and employment opportunities for people with neuromuscular conditions.

12TRAVEL: a theme for many over summer. Exploring places and meeting people are twin pleasures. Consider though, the actual place we live in. How about travelling here – way back in time – instead? Has Middlewich always been like it is now? If not, how many different versions of itself have existed? Particularly interesting is where we can see real evidence.Middlewich is one of the oldest towns in the county, with various starring roles. More recently arrived residents may be surprised to learn this… but isn’t it good for all of us to acknowledge its exceptionally long and unique past? Even just a few glimpses help remind. For example, hard to believe but Victorian Middlewich’s population was tiny – only around 1200 souls throughout the 19th century. (Nearly 15,000 now!) Yet much of the present inner town has property styles and street patterns which would have looked familiar. However, 18th century changes to the landscape, thanks to Brindley and Wedgwood, really made Middlewich what we now recognise. Cutting that first canal, the mighty Trent & Mersey, right through town in the 1770’s to create busy waterways was surely not only ground-breaking but for locals strange, unknown, and fearsome.Names (and deeds) of people living here in medieval times prove fascinating. Documents reveal in 1436 one Hugh Venables was granted, by the king Henry VI no less, a Forest of Mara oak tree to repair the Hall of Pleas… and also Middlewich’s common oven. Important! Locals depended on this to bake their daily bread. The following year he acquired another oak for that troublesome oven, plus, sadly, a new prison. Further back, 11th century Domesday records give us precise details of Norman land registers, naming individuals and locations. Our continental cousins became the Anglo-Saxons, and settling the district gave us most of our place-names, still used today. Prior to that the Roman period is, fortunately, very well presented. Look to Harbutt’s Field to re-imagine scenes of army life and that imposing fort - a distinctly and dramatically different presence for the people accustomed to living here. Those Britons were known as Cornovii. And before even that? Groupings of small ‘roundhouses’ (so called because that’s exactly what they resembled – circular huts) had already been established around the riversides of the Croco. But stop! Two thousand years or so is enough to handle! More later.Summer escapes are fun… but so is time travel close to home. Autumn time or anytime, the only movements needed are for reading Middlewich’s Heritage and taking engaging walks around town.Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritage...

16Katy meets... The Flower ShedEMBARK on a brief journey of just five minutes from Middlewich via Nantwich Road, and shortly after cruising past Wimboldsley Primary on the left, you will encounter Hopley House. This site hosts a variety of independent retail establishments, a farm shop, a café, and most recently, a charming florist known as The Flower Shed. The location is impossible to overlook as Sophie’s new venture is prominently situated just outside the main entrance of the farm shop, on the right-hand side. She showcases an array of floral arrangements available for purchase from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week. This makes it incredibly easy to brighten someone’s day, express an apology, or simply remind a loved one that they are cherished, at any time. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sophie for a conversation about her blossoming business while we enjoyed cups of tea at the Hopley House café. My own son is just a few years younger than Sophie, and I can’t help but feel a surge of pride for her. Despite her youth, she has accomplished extraordinary things since finishing school. She has not only acquired a skill but has also honed her talent in floristry, leading her to establish her own business, which continues to flourish with each passing day.Sophie’s career choice holds profound significance, as before the onslaught of COVID-19 in 2020, her world revolved around a close-knit family consisting of herself, her mother, and her grandad, Bob. Serving as a cherished father figure, Bob and Sophie shared an incredibly close bond; she often depicted him as having the vitality of a 40-year-old. However, in April 2020, their lives were dramatically altered when Bob contracted COVID-19 during a brief hospital stay for an unrelated issue. Tragically, her grandad succumbed to complications from the virus. The sudden loss left Sophie and her mother in a state of shock and profound grief, struggling to comprehend the abrupt void left by his absence. The heartbreak was compounded by the fact that only a limited number of attendees were permitted at the funeral. Despite the overwhelming sadness of the occasion, one aspect of the service provided a glimmer of solace amidst the sorrow – the flowers. Their presence had a profound impact on Sophie, offering a sliver of light in an otherwise dark time. The comfort and beauty the flowers provided in that dark time served as the catalyst for Sophie’s decision to pursue floristry as her vocation. Upon finishing school, she enrolled at Reaseheath College to attain a City and Guilds Level 2 in Floristry. Having successfully completed Level 2, she has since advanced to Level 3, which she is managing part-time while simultaneously operating her business.Dave, the proprietor of Hopley House, has been instrumental in supporting Sophie’s venture. The farm shop processes payments for her flower sales while she undertakes crucial trips to wholesalers, conducts consultations for weddings, funerals, and other events, and completes her flower deliveries. Sophie offers a same-day service on orders before 2 pm with complimentary delivery within a five-mile radius and a nominal fee for destinations beyond this range. Possessing a keen eye for colour, Sophie meticulously crafts her hand-tied bouquets, expertly merging contemporary and vintage elements to create a harmonious

She is in the process of developing her website, which will soon feature a subscription option, enabling customers to receive a regular delivery of a seasonal medley of petals right to their doorstep.Sophie’s passion is unmistakably rooted in creating floral displays for special occasions; she aims for her arrangements to impart a similar sense of solace and light to others as she found during a notably challenging time in her own life. Currently, she is open for wedding bookings and takes great pleasure in working closely with couples to design displays that resonate with their chosen colours and themes. Additionally, she recognises the profound impact flowers can have at funerals, serving as a beacon of light during the sorrowful moments when we bid farewell to our loved ones.So whether you wish to indulge yourself or a loved one, or incorporate her artistry into your special day, The Flower Shed at Hopley House is the perfect destination for all your floral needs. 22Cultivating Gratitude...WE live in a high-tech world that’s fast-paced, riddled with interruptions and demands high expectations. Every day, most of us suffer from information overload and it’s often overwhelming. Taking a moment to pause and reflect on the positives surrounding us can be a transformative act that encourages a welcome shift away from the daily grind.Gratitude journalling is a simple yet powerful practice. It offers a doorway to greater positivity and a heightened appreciation for everyday wonders. With its roots in mindfulness and self-awareness, gratitude invites us to step back from the chaos in favour of nurturing compassion. The Essence of Gratitude Journalling - At its core, gratitude journalling involves intentionally acknowledging and recording what we are grateful for. It encourages us to change our focus from what might be lacking to what we already possess, be it small moments of joy, acts of kindness from others or the simple beauty of nature. Doing this cultivates an attitude of appreciation in our thoughts, outlook on life and actions. The Benefits of Building a Positive Mindset Through GratitudeThere are many benefits of gratitude journalling, including:• Enhanced Wellbeing: Promoting increased overall wellbeing and life satisfaction by transferring our perspective towards the positive aspects of life.• Strengthened Relationships: Building deeper connections with people in our lives encourages kindness and compassion.• Resilience: Serving as a buffer against negative emotions during challenging times, helping reduce stress.• Mindfulness: Encouraging us to be present and mindful of the current moment.• Elevated Mood: Releasing endorphins and dopamine, our body’s natural feel-good vibes.A Gratitude Exercise - Find somewhere comfortable and quiet to sit with a journal or dedicated notebook and a pen. Breathe in a few deep breaths and clear your mind of the daily clutter. Without overthinking it, write down three things you are grateful for – big or small. If you’re struggling, think about three things that made you smile today. They could be personal experiences, interactions with others or a simple pleasure encountered. Take some time to reflect on how these things or incidents made you feel. Think about the steps you can take to bring more of this happiness into your life. This is an exercise you can carry out daily that will improve your overall outlook. In a world often dominated by the pursuit of bigger, better and faster, gratitude journalling is a gentle reminder to pause and recognise the abundance already in our lives. It’s a subtle yet rewarding journey that weaves self-discovery and positivity into everything we do.Next month, we’ll look at the practice of ‘morning pages’ and how to start your day with clarity and inspiration.Anna WoolliscroftYou can find me on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook: @JournallingWithAnna

26078Katy meets... St Luke’sIF you've recently taken a stroll down Wheelock Street and felt there was a new energy in the air, it's thanks to the grand reopening of the ever-beloved St Luke's Shop. After a three-year rejuvenation phase, partly hindered by the pandemic, St Luke's is back this July, and dare I say, it's more radiant than ever. The relentless dedication of the St Luke's team has transformed every nook and cranny of the store. Their expansion at the rear has metamorphosed a once-quaint charity shop into a delightful realm for the young ones, brimming with chic attire and an array of toys. More so, in this age of inclusivity, it's heartening to note the revamped interiors, ensuring accessibility for everyone.Steven Holmes, Retail Operations Manager leading St Luke’s, remarked with his trademark enthusiasm, “Our Middlewich branch is more is a hub of the community. The welcome from the community and the chance to welcome back our dedicated volunteers and customers is truly heartwarming. And remember, each purchase contributes to the Hospice – so it's not just shopping; it's making a difference!”For those with a penchant for fashion, the store is now a goldmine. It stocks a spectrum of collections ranging from the latest trends to those cherished high-end pieces. And if you're feeling adventurous, the diverse assortment in the kids' corner and the bric-a-brac section is a trove waiting to be discovered. For the uninitiated, here’s a tidbit: St Luke's in Middlewich isn't just another branch; it's where it all began 35 years ago. It once doubled as the financial nerve centre for St Luke’s. The story has since evolved. From its humble beginnings, St Luke’s now proudly stands with 9 establishments dotting South Cheshire, including a majestic furniture warehouse in Winsford. At the core of St Luke’s allure is its dedicated community of volunteers. Each one brings their unique touch, often driven by personal ties to the store's mission. Their insider secret? They get the first glimpse of all the fabulous donations!A word to the wise about donations: It's best to hand them over in person. Not only does this protect the items from unpredictable weather, but it also ensures they’re eligible for Gift Aid, further aiding St Luke's cause.During my recent visit, amidst chats with the new shop manager Carol, two delightful incidents occurred: a surprise visit from Neil Wright, St Luke’s Chief Executive, and a serendipitous find – a pristine blue dress that screamed 'special occasion'. Perfect for my next soirée, wouldn't you agree?St Luke's on Wheelock Street is more than just a store; it's a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the undying passion to make a difference. So the next time you're in the vicinity, drop in, maybe find your own blue dress, and be a part of this beautiful journey..Katy

But with the right estate agent by your side, this emotional ride can turn into a delightful adventure. For those in the know, Coulby Conduct is that dependable companion who ensures the journey is filled with clarity, ease, and unwavering support. This July, Coulby Conduct celebrated a golden 25 years in the property arena. Their spirit, passion, and consistent innovation are palpable even today, reflected in the many team members from those pioneering days who are still integral to the firm.Collette and the Team, Jan and Simon, are the linchpin of the Middlewich branch. With two decades of industry wisdom and diverse range of experiences. Craving the personal touch and flexibility of an independent firm, they have found a perfect fit at Coulby. 36Days Out, Meals Out Reviews...DURING the Summer we went into Manchester on the train to explore the new exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry. “Operation Ouch! Food, You & Poo”Operation Ouch is based on the BBC Tv Programme and starts with meeting the familiar faces of Dr Chris, Dr Xand and Dr Ronx, and they explain the mission ahead. You are to be shrunk down and put inside one of the doctors to explore their digestive system.I was blown away with how fantastic Operation Ouch was. They have put together a really in depth exploration of the digestive system, but done in such a simple and clear way that its very accessible to children. The information boards are short, sweet and easy to read. They don’t go into loads of detail but has clear facts and big writing. They won’t overwhelm young children by having too much to read. There are more videos of the doctors throughout the exhibit, doing experiments and going into more detail about each stage of the digestive system. The videos are fun and entertaining to watch and much more fun than just reading the information. There are plenty of hands on activities which enhanced our visit. It got us talking about health and our bodies. I loved it when my girls asked me more questions about the subject as we walked around. This always shows they are interested and taking things in.Each section of the digestive system has its own room. This is great as you can wander around each area finding out about just one part of the body at a time before moving along. Sections start in the mouth, moving to the stomach and small intestine. Until you get to the normally untalked about part of how your poo is made. This gives children and adults an opportunity to talk about a hidden subject. Be warned, there is a lot of poo info in the last room! There are lots of games and different tasks to do. Questions that challenge you to think about what you already know and to test you on new information learnt. My girls and myself enjoyed Operation Ouch, they like anything which is hands-on and it’s always good when it’s a subject that they can relate to. We spent just under 2 hours in the exhibit, we then went to have our packed lunch in the picnic room. You could easily spend the rest of your day looking around the rest of the museum as there were plenty of other activities and exhibits. When you book your tickets for Operation Ouch you must book your free tickets for the museum too..Jenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews Pre Book online along with your free Mosi tickets. 46I thought it might be appropriate to use this month’s ‘Middlewich Memories’ to pay tribute to a young lady who was our Heritage Officer for close on sixteen years and, in that time, transformed the way Middlewich looks at its heritage. The initiatives created by our new Heritage Officer did so much to tell the story of our town, not only to its residents, but also to the wider world.Kerry Kirwan was appointed at the start of October 2007 at a time when Middlewich had, at best, a hazy idea of its own history. We knew that the settlement which later became Middlewich pre-dated the Roman invasion and that the Romans were interested in the area because of its salt-making history. Every school pupil knows that the Romans prized salt and used it as currency, hence the word ‘salary’. The Heritage Society, of which I was a founder member back in 1985, did a lot to foster interest in our history and it was undoubtedly the work of the society which led the council to appoint Kerry as full-time Heritage Officer, working alongside the late town clerk, Jonathan Williams, and events manager Dave Thompson.I worked with Kerry on two of her projects; ‘Tales of Wych & Water’ and ‘The War At Home’. My role was to edit together snippets of interviews which Kerry and her teams of volunteers collected around the town, telling the stories of Middlewich’s salt industry and canals and the role local people played in maintaining everyday life during World War II. Songs written by Dave Thompson and Andy Roscoe were then interleaved with these reminiscencesfrom local people. One of the interviewees was ‘Auntie’ Maureen Shaw of Wardle Lock Cottage.Kerry’s work in Middlewich eventually led to the formation of the Heritage Trust which, in turn, led to her crowning achievement in the town, the restoration and preservation of the Murgatroyd’s Brine Pumps in Brooks Lane, allowing our town to boast a unique piece of salt-making heritage to complement the Lion Salt Works at Wincham. The restoration of the ICI War Memorial, also in Brooks Lane, was another of Kerry’s projects which I had the honour, as Community Mayor, of declaring open.Kerry’s contribution to Middlewich was immense and she’ll be very much missed, not least by the Heritage Trust which, under the able stewardship of Mike Walton, continues the work started by Kerry.Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories
