10FROM 1959 until 1983 I lived with my family at no 33 (originally no 27) King Street. The back garden of no 33 afforded us a grandstand view of Middlewich which has gone forever and is, at this distance in time, hard to believe ever existed.At the bottom of Buckley’s ﬁeld where, in the present day, a massive green water tank has been built, was Middlewich Gas Works, with an earlier massive green tank which held town gas. It was possible to tell how much gas was being used by the height of this gas-holder, which moved up and down as gas was pumped in and taken out. On Sunday afternoons, when everyone was tucking into traditional roast dinners, the tank was virtually out of sight as the demand for gas made it sink.Beyond the Gas Works was the River Croco, the Trent & Mersey Canal and then, spread out across our ﬁeld of vision like a Lowry painting, Henry Seddon’s Open Pan Salt Works in Pepper Street.Not everyone’s idea of a scenic view, of course, but I found it fascinating as the ancient business of salt making took place before my very eyes. It even got me through Art O level while I was still at school, with a pencil drawing of the works gaining me a pass. My art teacher incidentally, was Robert Westall, later to become an award-winning children’s author with such books as ‘The Machine Gunners’.Then, quite suddenly, in 1967 it was all over. The works, along with its sisters in Wych House Lane and Brooks Lane, closed and the black smoke and steam which had been part of all our lives disappeared.The derelict works lingered on for a few years, ﬁnally being demolished in the early 1970s. Last to go were the gaunt brick chimneys, which were felled by very hard work with a sledgehammer.Our photo shows the very last of them in its death throes, watched by King Street residents May Lemon and Dora Darlington.In the background is Wheelock Street. The white building middle left is The Vaults, and the huge building behind the toppling chimney is the former Barclays Bank.‘The Moorings’ now occupy the site of the works.Inset is a part of the works, seen from Webbs Lane. It is run by the lovely Cath, who sources, makes and paints cute fairy houses and accessories. Her permanent stall is in the craft room, where lots of other businesses sell their items too.What’s extra special about Cottage Crafts is that during the school holidays she runs children’s workshops. You can book your child onto these 1 hour sessions where they can make their own fairy house. Cottage crafts provide all the beautiful little pieces you will need to make your magical creation. It costs just £10 per child or there is a discount on multiple bookings. 18Love nature...CHESHIRE creatives Nigel Danson landscape photographer and Allie Pottinger watercolour artist are set to raise your spirits with their joint exhibition this September.‘The Spirit of Luskentyre’ show is a celebration of works inspired by their time on the Isle of Harris’s spectacular Luskentyre beach on the Outer Hebrides. Epic photographer and YouTube sensation Nigel, spent 30 days photographing one beach. Discover his stunning framed works of transient weather conditions from sunrise to sunset. Allie joined Nigel for a week, she is an avid plein air painter. Allie says of her experience “Every sense was involved in creating this work - the taste of the salt on the air. The feeling of wind and sun on your skin, the biting cold whilst sitting on the rocks absorbing the scene, the sound of seabirds, crash of the waves and the distant whirl of a wind turbine. 30CANAL-SIDE streets… by the railway…centre-town Middlewich. Notice the housing - terrace-style. Why so much of this? How come they’re called ‘terraced’ anyway? And, er, connections with Italy? Now, that is curious! Homes are dear to our hearts. And how we live (or lived) often intrigues us. The tale of the terrace is a backstory worth exploring - with a surprisingly noble heritage attached. Considered very ‘19th century’ it’s hard to think of another style of building that has swept the social scale as much as the terrace house has managed to do. Many of us have occupied one at some point. Yet the concept - a uniﬁed plan for constructing neat, symmetrical dwellings linked only by side walls - started to become popular way back in the 17th century. An idea brought over from Renaissance Italy, at ﬁrst these were for polite society, elegantly ranged around smart city squares and gardens. Deﬁnitely des res. Move forward to times following the Industrial Revolution. High-density residential was urgently required. Convenience was keyword for supplying workers with low-cost habitations as near as possible to mills and factories, quickly, and of course using up the least space. Simpliﬁed versions of terraces were ideal. Here this applied especially to the transport services. By this stage too the punishing Glass Tax had been repealed, with glazing available more cheaply. Light entered the terrace from tall rectangular sash windows, front and rear. Rounded doorways were (still are) a feature, sometimes with semi-circular fanlights above, another Italianate touch. Look out locally for examples of traditional variations, from plainest - to wealthier, adorned with big, glassy, bay windows. Some dwellings converted into retail. Or rows were built with corner pubs or shops, now iconic/nostalgic!The term itself… how on earth did that arise? First namesake was Adelphi Terrace in London by the Strand. Constructed by famed Scottish architect brothers John and Robert Adam around 1770, this was something special – although the new development was daringly sited on very marshy ground! (Cleverly an apt reference was built in to all this: ‘Adelphi’ is Greek for ‘brothers’.) A close-set line of 24 prestigious houses was given an adjacent, level paved area. Residents could stroll in comfort to enjoy views of the river Thames on their terraced walkway. 42The secret chef...Method:Make the marinade in a ﬂat dish of a size that will allow the duck breasts to lie ﬂat. Skin the duck breasts and score the top side where the skin was removed. Marinate overnight if possible (but at least 4 hours), turning and basting once.For the sauce add all the ingredients to a pan, bring slowly to the boil and simmer until the plums are soft. Blend with a hand blender until smooth. Taste as the sweetness will depend on how sweet the plums are to start with. Add more brown sugar if desired, but retain the tartness.Heat a non-stick ribbed frying pan and cook the duck breasts for about 5 minutes each side. Remove and cover in tin foil to rest.Serve with roast parsnips, broccoli and sautéed red cabbage. Duck with a tart plum sauceIngredients:2 duck breastsFor marinade:2 cloves of garlic, crushed1 cm root ginger, grated1 tbsp light soya sauce½ tbsp Worcester sauce1 tbsp runny honeyground black pepperFor Plum Sauce:500g red plums, stoned (do not skin)1 cup red wine3 tsp mixed spice ¼ cup brown sugar Tips:Serves 2We always freeze the root ginger. It keeps longer this way and is easier to skin and grate. The excess marinade can be added to the plum sauce if desired.
