I wonder if the scorching temperatures will persist as we enter July. It's peculiar because I typically enjoy the heat, especially when on holiday in hot countries. However, I find myself constantly trying to stay cool these days. My heart goes out to our two dogs, Jake and Teddy, who struggle in this heat due to their furry coats. We've provided them with a doggy paddling pool to cool off, but all they've done so far is drink the water!July marks the beginning of the school summer holidays, and I have an exciting adventure planned with my son. We're embarking on a journey through Vietnam, staying in hostels, taking overnight trains, and spending a few nights on a junk boat. I'm filled with anticipation since, in my younger days, I never had the opportunity to travel extensively, only reaching as far as Fuerteventura! While I'm away, my husband will remain at home, taking care of our business, Go Local, as well as our beloved dogs. Each holds equal importance in our lives. This year, we've decided to introduce an additional magazine edition in September. Some of our advertisers shared that when we don't publish a magazine, they experience a quieter month. Therefore, we made the decision to include an 11th edition to meet their needs.I hope you have a wonderful July and I will speak to you very soon.Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local!Go Local Middlewich is part of

8AT Spark Lane Nurser ies, the vibrant flowers burst into life, inviting me to create a captivating hanging basket. Seeking Brian Lowe’s botanical wisdom, I discovered an exquisite mix of flowers that would infuse my space with enchanting colours and radiance.Brian’s top choice was the Surfinia flower, renowned for its captivating beauty. With its trailing growth and abundant blooms, it created a mesmerizing display of elegance. Surfinias came in a variety of shades, from bold reds and purples to soft pinks and whites, adding charm and allure to any garden or outdoor area. Their delicate yet striking appearance made them the preferred option for those seeking the undeniable beauty of nature.Next, Lobelia White Star, also known as Lobelia erinus ‘White Star,’ added its unique charm to the basket. Its star-shaped white flowers stood out against lush green foliage, evoking purity and grace. This compact, trailing plant gracefully cascaded over pot edges, bringing sophistication and beauty to garden beds, borders, or containers. To infuse a touch of sunshine, Brian included Bidens yellow daisy, scientifically known as Bidens ferulifolia. This charming flowering plant boasted bright yellow, daisy-like blooms that danced amidst delicate, fern-like foliage. Its abundant and eye-catching flowers brought cheerful colour to gardens, borders, and containers. With its ability to withstand heat and drought, Bidens yellow daisy proved to be a resilient and low-maintenance choice, enhancing outdoor spaces with its radiant beauty throughout an extended blooming period.Under Brian Lowe’s botanical expertise, the harmonious blend of Surfinias, Lobelia White Star, and Bidens yellow daisy transformed my hanging basket into a captivating masterpiece, radiating the natural beauty that brightened my home.KatySpark Lane Nurseries...

12IN the mid-sixties, when we were both still at school, Andrew Craig and I were invited to join Middlewich’s amateur dramatic group, the St Michael’s Players, which held its meetings and staged performances at the ICI Club in Brooks Lane. The club building still exists as home to the Middlewich Community Church. The Players were formed at Christmas 1943 in order to produce a nativity play at St Michael’s. Several more nativity and other short plays followed until, in 1950, the group formerly became The St Michael’s Players, performing plays at the old Middlewich Town Hall, situated where the Amphitheatre, perhaps fittingly, now stands. When Andrew and I came on the scene in around 1966, some of the founder members were still around, notably Don Rushton and Honora Jackson. Also forever to be associated with the group and still around in the 1960s was Olwen Cash, daughter of Fred Cash of Ashfield Garage.Andrew was given a part in The Amorous Prawn, an amateur dramatic society favourite, which had been made into a film starring Ian Carmichael, Joan Greenwood and Cecil Parker in 1962.My interest lay more in lighting and sound effects and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the creaky and fearsomely sparking dimmer switches and the record players and tape recorders which in those pre-digital days were the only way of producing sound effects. One of the effects needed for the Amorous Prawn was the sound of a shotgun, and we produced this by the simple expedient of obtaining a shotgun and firing it at an old oil drum behind the club. A special licence had to be obtained from the local police to do this. God alone knows what the residents of Brooks Lane thought. When it came to producing the sound of a loud explosion, also necessary for the plot, we were less adventurous and used the well-known expedient of getting someone to make an explosive sound into the mike (with his mouth, naturally) and amplifying it to ear-splitting proportions.I worked backstage with Don Rushton, an inveterate pipe-smoker, and to this day, the smell of Clan tobacco brings back those heady, adventurous days. Our photo, from 1956. only ten years before, shows the St Michael’s Players performing ‘The Price of Fame’. The Lady on the left is my Auntie Winnie (Oakes) and seated at the table is Colin King, the society’s treasurer.Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories

16Days Out, Meals Out Reviews...A Smallwood family has opened a farm shop in memory of their loving son who sadly died following a road accident in Rushton Spencer.Alec’s parents Gill and Paul are hoping they can help local businesses by stocking locally produced food as well as their own jersey milk & freshly made cakes. The farm shop has only been open since March 2023. We went for a visit to see how they were getting on. I met Gill who was working in the little shop while watching the King’s Coronation. It was lovely to meet Gill & to hear all about what they are aiming to achieve.Alec was passionate about his animals and farming in general. From a very early age, he could be found busy in the fields tending his sheep, sowing grass for the next year. In more recent years, he had bred his own foals and reared countless sheep. The shop is a way they can help support the charity “Farms for City Children” which embodies Alec’s beliefs. The charity give children in urban areas an unforgettable week living and working on a farm. Helping them reconnect to the countryside & nature & learn about food sources. There is a table of items for sale dedicated to the Farms for City Children charity. All sales from this stock go 100% to this wonderful charity. All in Alec’s memory. The farm is a real family affair with everyone pitching in from milking the cows, baking the cakes to manning the shop and everything in between. The shop stocks their own jersey milk, cheese, bread, cereals, jams and baking ingredients. But the main attraction is the chilled display fridge full of freshly made sandwiches and a selection of take home pies. The cakes which are made by Jenny, Alec’s older sister, on the top shelf were seriously impressive. My little girl chose a massive slice of the Kinder Hippo chocolate cake, we got a slice of biscoff caramel shortbread too and a biscuit in the shape of a horse for a friend. They sell soft serve ice cream & slushies too.The farm shop is next door to Smallwood school so is perfect for an after school treat. It’s also easy to find when driving and would be a great place to stop on a bike ride.Alec’s Farm Shop is on School Lane, Smallwood, Sandbach CW11 2URJenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews You can find more reviews on my Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’

32ENJOYING al fresco coffee somewhere over summer? Highly likely. Public places serving refreshment might not seem like anyone’s town heritage. Yet they conceal quite a story. So then, what’s historical about café culture? And how and when did Middlewich join?Cafés are nothing new. Go back almost four hundred years, to the mid-17th century, when travellers visiting exotic Turkey and beyond brought back some unusual new drinks. Non-alcoholic, these perky beverages instead were caffeinated. Cue the introduction of… the Coffee House. This cleverly novel setting tempted tipplers out of the taverns, and many husbands out of the home. Why? Because the stimulating but bitter black drink, served up in a dish, was initially promoted as a health remedy. The line-up on offer included teas (although far less popular), drinking chocolate, and sherbets. That first happened not in rural Cheshire but in Oxford, catching on in other cities, London especially. For a penny entrance charge gentlemen and their pipes could take up a place on benches around large tables set out with the latest pamphlets and periodicals. The huge appeal was chance to discuss news, politics, gossip - often dreaming up business ideas and even new enterprises, some eventually becoming famous. Important social spaces! Early cafés were obviously a smoky, creative hotbed. Downsides however – sounding familiar - were the perceived threat to authority by spreading ‘false news’. In 1676 King Charles II wanted the ‘evil and dangerous’ dens banned outright. Neither were they were female-friendly, stirring the Women’s Petition Against Coffee movement in 1674.Tea-drinking overtook coffee consumption in Georgian and Victorian periods. Riding the trend here in 1850 were several tea dealers: at High Town were James Dean and George Gresty; on Kinderton Street was Joseph Royle, whilst the Stanier Brothers were on Wheelock Street. (All loose leaf: no tea bags for another hundred years!)Tea shops themselves though as a place, particularly for ladies to relax inside away from their homes and chat over a pot with friends, didn’t exist anywhere until very late in the 19th century. Middlewich indeed had refreshment rooms in 1892. Notably, one was operated by a Mrs Ellen Clarke at Number 28, Hightown. Perhaps hers was one of the first to welcome women customers? Running a similar establishment on Wheelock Street at the time was Abraham Sant. Are any of these people your ancestors?Despite occasional opposition the tradition continues, extended outdoors if possible. Differences over time intrigue, yet it’s lingering similarities which amaze. Something to contemplate next time you sit down with a cuppa.Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritage...

36We employ a diverse range of therapeutic techniques here at Higher Farm, with a primary focus on Equine Assisted Psychotherapy. For individuals who find it challenging to engage with traditional therapists and professionals, equine therapy presents a fantastic alternative that offers numerous additional benefits.During the initial session, it is advantageous to maintain an unstructured approach and observe how the horses interact with the young person when they are free to roam. Horses possess a natural ability to respond to emotions and are highly sensitive to the emotional states projected by humans. This provides a unique opportunity for me to analyse the body language of both the young person and the horse, establishing a foundation from which to determine the most suitable techniques for the individual. Additionally, the young person is encouraged to reflect on how their emotional state affects the body language of the horse. Once the initial session concludes, we can delve into facilitated therapeutic conversations, wherein young people learn to identify and manage their emotions, as well as develop coping mechanisms with the assistance of the horse.Throughout the sessions, we explore how horses and humans respond to each other’s body language, and how this reciprocal responsiveness is observed by young people and therapy staff. Furthermore, we address concepts of ‘responsibility’ and ‘accountability’ within the sessions, encompassing the responsibilities assumed by horses, young people, staff, volunteers, teachers, and other involved professionals or individuals in caring for themselves and each other. This grounded theory of horse-human interactions describes a transformative journey where young people co-regulate and attune themselves with horses within an environment—the stables—that they perceive as a social sanctuary. Consequently, a deeper connection is established not only with the horses but also with their own bodily experiences and with other people. These connections provide a safe space for young people to explore alternative ways of responding to adversity, leading to a transformation of unhelpful behavioural and relational patterns.By engaging with horses, young people develop essential skills in emotion regulation, perspective-taking, and communication that can be applied to their relationships with others. Through narratives that emphasise agency and prosocial qualities rather than deficits, derived from their interactions with horses, young people cultivate a sense of self-worth that enables positive changes in various aspects of their lives. In addition to the therapeutic benefits, young people also acquire vital life skills essential for future employment, including effective communication, confidence, leadership, and resilience.Phoebe Harper, Higher FarmEquine Assisted Therapy

48AI, friend or foe?OVER the last few editions of Go Local Middlewich, we’ve been employing AI tools to create text for the introductions, aid with ideas, and offer an alternative perspective. It is the hot topic of the moment and there are many questions around it’s uses. You might wonder why we have sought AI’s assistance or ask are we simply following the trend. The truth is, we are striving to comprehend AI and how this rapidly advancing set of tools benefits businesses. We’ve all read books, seen TV shows, and movies where AI destroys humanity, but unless we take the time to understand its use, is it fair to simply say we shouldn’t use it?I often talk about calculators when asked about AI. We can all do maths, yet we reach for one (physically or as an app on our phones) when we need to add anything up. Is AI any different from that?In some respects, yes, AI is a tremendously powerful calculator that not only provides the answer but can also spot errors, show you the workings out, and even write you a song about it. But in other ways, no, I see AI as a tool. We’re already using AI in our everyday lives, perhaps without even realising it. If you have a smartphone and take pictures, AI will be helping you capture better photos. If you use the internet to search, AI will be interpreting your searches, and if you interact with businesses online, you’ll initially be talking to a robot. While we don’t know where AI is going to take us, what we’ve discovered on this journey is that AI can help us. We have moments when we’re stuck for ideas, need some other input, or simply need to reach for the metaphorical “calculator.” For our business, we’ll continue to use and see AI as part of our business team.If you find yourself wondering if you can use AI, I encourage you to conduct thorough research. Learn from those who are already utilising it, read about it online, listen to podcasts, and watch YouTube videos. After all, that’s what AI is doing!
