Last year, when we were approached by the new independent organisers of the FAB Festival, we enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to support them. Our commitment to our local community is of utmost importance, and we wholeheartedly shared their passion for this Middlewich event. Since November of last year, we have dedicated our time and resources, providing a platform to promote the festival throughout Middlewich. It is with a heavy heart I have to say we are no longer involved in the production and delivery of the Festival Guide. Personally, I am deeply saddened by this outcome, as I was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to design the guide and distribute it with Go Local. Now, turning our attention to June, it holds a special place in my heart as it marks my birthday. It is a wonderful time to celebrate, as we often have the chance to gather friends and enjoy a sunny day in the garden with a BBQ. Alternatively, we can visit one of the many charming pubs in Middlewich, sit in their inviting beer gardens, and simply relax. Whatever your plans are this month, my wish is for the sun to be shining brightly upon you, allowing you to spend quality time with the people you cherish.Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local!Go Local Middlewich is part of

10speaks of this accomplishment with immense pride, and rightfully so. In fact, the very first apprentice has ascended to Build Director within the firm.Adrian also holds a strong commitment to supporting the local community and charities. The Lench family, unfortunately, experienced the loss of a team member to prostate cancer recently, and they have plans to organise fundraising events in memory of their colleague. Additionally, they have been longstanding supporters of the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young and proudly sponsor local young sports teams and individuals.Once TTL Building and Maintenance kickstart the construction of your new extension or development, they have a team of over 300 trusted contractors and skilled in-house staff, including bricklayers, joiners, plumbers, electricians, and more. This means they have all bases covered in a single journey, from preparing the ground to adding those perfect finishing touches. With their expertise spanning a wide range of projects, including new builds, extensions, barn conversions, and turnkey endeavors, they bring a wealth of experience to the table. Moreover, A Lench Building Contractors boasts an in-house buyer, enabling them to procure materials and secure the best prices available. Throughout the entire project, Chris diligently oversees project management and keeps a watchful eye on costs, ensuring it stays within budget and on schedule. This seamless communication between Chris and the builder is a significant advantage, as it eliminates any obstacles and ensures a smooth workflow. On a personal level, from my initial impression of both Chris and Adrian, it is evident that they are two exceptionally hardworking and compassionate individuals. Their dedication shines through when they discuss their involvement in the community and their commitment to nurturing apprentices. Adrian takes great pride in giving me a tour of their office, introducing me to the entire staff. He proudly showcases their collection of building awards and heartfelt thank-you certificates from charities they have supported, while he admits that recognition is not their motivation for supporting charities, their primary goal is to provide as much help as they can. As a family-oriented man, Adrian strongly believes in the importance of training and developing his team. They regularly organise team-building days to foster strong relationships within the business, and from the moment new staff members join, he encourages empowerment and growth.Having met Chris and Adrian, I now have a comprehensive understanding of the collaborative structure of A Lench Building Contractors, with their partnership with Wild Goose Architecture and TTL Building Contractors and Maintenance. This partnership allows them to harness the expertise and resources of a larger company while maintaining a personalised approach and genuine understanding of the significance your home holds for you. With their combined strength, they are equipped to provide exceptional service. Once your dream home is completed, it becomes a canvas for countless new life stories, creating cherished memories for years to come. KatyKaty meets... Along with them, they work in tandem with TTL Building and Maintenance LTD and Wild Goose Architecture, who specialise in crafting breath taking residential properties. The journey of improving your home has two main parts, and the beauty of working with TTL and Wild Goose is that they collaborate throughout the entire process. It typically starts with Chris Rye from Wild Goose Architecture, an Architectural Designer with over 30 years of experience working with well-respected firms across Cheshire and Staffordshire. He begins by discovering your dreams and aspirations for your home during a face-to-face consultation. Then, he puts together some initial ideas, timelines, and, most importantly, works within your budget. Once you’re satisfied and have appointed him, he digs deeper with site surveys and creates a virtual 3D model to help you envision what your new home will look like. Chris ensures that the client’s budget and expectations are always at the top of his mind, and having Adrian Lench from TTL nearby is a massive bonus, as he can provide cost estimates for everything from groundworks to a complete bespoke fit out where required.Next, Chris will assess whether the proposed build requires planning permission or falls within permitted development guidelines. If planning permission is necessary, he will handle all the required documentation and prepare detailed drawings. He will then submit them and diligently follow through until approval is successfully obtained.Once everything is set to go, all the building works are entrusted to TTL. 14NO doubt about it, as a town Middlewich is impressively ancient. That gives us almost too much to explore. But here’s a little piece of lost landscape of ‘only’ a mere 150 years ago. Where? It’s in the very middle of Middlewich. Old maps reveal the historic core once sported a facility we wouldn’t expect to find in that spot today. We’re talking… bowling greens.Tucked in between Wheelock Street on its northern side and Nantwich Road was a centre-town green, west of Darlington Street. Hard to imagine now. Nevertheless, here in Newton late 19th century locals could enjoy their game of bowls, then very popular. In towns everywhere they’re still a frequent sight, even if some do seem more hidden away. But behind those familiar and immaculate emerald lawns is a surprise of a story. These sporting spaces have endured a long, bumpy ride! How did they come to feature in so many townscapes? Well, bowls (in any of its evolving forms) must easily be one of the earliest forms of recreation in existence…Amazing to realise, the oldest known green still in use is in Southampton, dating way back to 1299. The medieval game was highly favoured. Large houses and castles established bowling greens or alleys – flat, oblong-shaped pieces of ground, preferably turfed, and surrounded by a raised earthen ledge. For those less affluent, it was the public inns and taverns that often provided an outdoor space to play, albeit on makeshift, uneven ground. Whilst Henry VIII was a keen practitioner, he was military-minded, and didn’t want his populace enjoying bowls when they should be usefully practising archery instead! Several monarchs before him managed to ban the sport.Rolling on, the early 19th century presented two important milestones, technically and legally. The first was the invention in 1830 of, yes, the lawnmower - easing the way toward those neat smooth greens. The second, in 1845, was the repeal of drastic and out-dated laws limiting participation in the game. No longer the preserve of the well-to-do, lawn bowls - whether arising from palace or pub - again opened to all enthusiasts. Even today distinction is still made between the codes of ‘flat green’ and the variety with raised surface known as ‘crown green’.Right here, Middlewich didn’t lose that old bowling green entirely. Still evident by the Second World War, this irregular-shaped plot long retained its unbuilt character. A green was also sited later near tennis courts on Queen Street. Adjacent to the British Legion is where action happens now. Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritage...

18Middlewich High School... AS we settle into the Summer Term at Middlewich High School, we are taking the opportunity to reflect on our values of: Aspire, Believe and Belong. Our students continue to demonstrate their commitment to our values, and to Achieving Excellence throughout a broad range of activities. Year 7 students have taken part in a joint Community Litter Pick with our partner primary schools, taking care and responsibility for our environment whilst being excellent role models, showing what it means to be a global citizen. Staff and students at MHS have embraced the opportunity to get involved in Coronation-themed activities, such as further community service as part of ‘The Big Help Out’, an Inter-House Art competition and a Coronation-themed ‘Big Lunch.’ This term has also seen the start of the GCSE examination season, and our Year 11 students are already rising to the challenge with focused determination, hope and aspiration for what is to come. We continue to wish them every success as they demonstrate what it truly means to Achieve Excellence. Another exciting aspect of the Summer Term is the opportunity to welcome Year 6 students, who begin the transition process from primary school to MHS. We are delighted that those students will be joining us and we can’t wait to get to know them as we look forward to more exciting ‘Middlewich Moments’ ahead.Middlewich High School

22multiple generations of the same family!Overtime, some of Samantha’s elderly clients struggled to get to the clinic, and the home visiting service grew naturally as a result of that. Now, she delivers home visits for both new and old clients and offers these to less mobile patients. Samantha realises that this service is invaluable to some people, as to many it is just as much of a social interaction as it is an appointment.I asked if the covid pandemic had impacted her business, to which she told me that it had. Although business was only restricted for the first few weeks of lockdown, she found that adjusting to the new rules and regulations was challenging. Throughout that time, she tells me that people were grateful to access podiatry services, and many were even more grateful to have that human contact during such an unprecedented time! During lockdown, she also volunteered as a vaccinator in the Victoria Centre in Middlewich as a way of giving back to and supporting the NHS.When asked what the future holds for her business, Samantha says that she wants to focus on maintaining her success whilst also balancing life outside of work- some of her favourite hobbies being keeping fit and healthy, outdoor swimming, and partaking in musical theatre. Considering the ever-evolving nature of podiatry, Samantha says she’s going to keep up to date with new treatments and maintain a high standard of care. So, whatever issue you may have with your feet, it’s good to know that you’re in safe hands of a passionate professional, and not only will you receive helpful treatment, but you’ll also be met with a smile too. Lois HattonBehind the business with Lois... SAMANTHA Hatton is the face behind Samantha J Hatton Professional Footcare where she offers podiatry services in her clinic room based in Cheshire Lasers on Wheelock Street in Middlewich. As well as this, she also provides a home visiting service for people struggling to get out and about. At first glance, being a podiatrist might not seem like the most thrilling job but, when speaking to Samantha, I found that there was so much more to it than I first thought. From working as an NHS diabetes specialist podiatrist to running her own private practice, I found out why Samantha chose to become a podiatrist and what drives her to be so passionate about her job. After wanting to have a career in healthcare since she was very young, Samantha tells me that it was her A Level chemistry teacher who handed her a podiatry prospectus and, after reading, she knew that it was the career she wanted to pursue. I asked her what made her so drawn to podiatry; she told me that she loved the idea of working in different environments, treating a wide range of people, and providing comfort to patients to help them stay mobile. So, after leaving Sir John Deanes Sixth Form College, Samantha left her hometown of Middlewich to study podiatry at the London Foot Hospital and School of Podiatric Medicine. There, she spent 3 years studying podiatry theory whilst also getting lots of hands-on experience at the neighbouring hospitals. Once her time at university had come to an end, Samantha returned to the northwest to begin her job as an NHS Podiatrist in Warrington- she stayed with the NHS for 27 years! Throughout that time, she trained and studied to become a Diabetes Specialist Podiatrist; this involved further study into diabetic footcare and she worked in Warrington hospital. In addition to this, she mentored students who were hoping to follow in her footsteps (no pun intended!) as well as delivered lectures to university students. So, how did Samantha go from working full-time for the NHS to running her own private practice in Middlewich? Well, after having a daughter, she decided to set up a business much closer to home. So, renting a room at Cheshire Lasers for 1 day a week, Samantha J Hatton Professional Footcare was created! As her private practice gained more and more business, she was faced with the decision of either leaving her NHS position to work for herself full-time, or to employ an associate. This decision came at a time when she was feeling very rushed within her NHS role and was frustrated that she couldn’t give the personal service to her clients that she wanted to. As a result of this, she left the NHS to focus on her own business and to work in Middlewich full-time.Samantha tells me that she’s never regretted this move, and that it worked well because as her daughter became more independent, she was able to let her business grow naturally. She also says that working locally has allowed her to embrace the social side to her job and get to know her patients better than before. She now sees people from all over Middlewich and it’s neighbouring towns, saying that the most satisfying aspect of her work is that people walk out of her clinic much more comfortable and happier than when they entered. She tells me that people come to her embarrassed, unhappy, in pain, and it’s fulfilling to see those same patients leave satisfied and relieved. It’s clear that as Samantha’s business has grown, so has her connection to the local community- with it not being uncommon for her to treat

The team at Sanctuary Tax & Trust explain how many families nd themselves victims of avoidable losses and why simply writing a will does not guarantee our family will inherit as we wish. For the vast majority of people, we spend all our lives working to build up wealth, through property, savings and pensions we look at providing nancial security for our families and when our nal day arrives, we hope these assets will pass to the people we care about the most, partners, children, relatives and friends. Traditionally, people have chosen wills to document their wishes and while writing a will is important, it does not provide any protection for the assets within it.Considerations when planning InheritanceCare Fees – As we live longer the likelihood of needing care becomes greater and under the government’s changes to the social care act should the need for care arise, we could see our asset taken down to just £14,250. The new assessment process will see everybody with property and savings over a combined value of £23,250 being required to pay for their care.Relationship Failure – When passing assets purely through a will we see many leaving their assets to their children but not giving consideration to what would happen if one of their children was to divorce. This can lead to a child seeing half of their inheritance in the hands of an ex-partner and in the event of early bereavement this can lead to grandchildren being disinherited.Inheritance Tax – The current IHT framework can be complex and unknowingly people can leave their children and even grandchildren with an Inheritance tax issue.Probate – The cost of probate as risen dramatically over the last few years, and it can be a lengthy and drawn-out process. On average, with a valid Will, probate will typically take 6 – 12 months to complete, without a Will it may can take up to 2 years. Its Never the Wrong Time To Do The Right Thing – While people appreciate that inheritance planning is important many will delay seeking the correct advice. 30Let’s talk legal...EVOLVE Family Law is delighted to announce that experienced family law solicitor Eluned Roberts has joined their team of specialist family and private client lawyers. Eluned is a trained collaborative lawyer who is also able to offer a new service at Evolve, an amicable divorce service for couples looking for a one-lawyer divorce. Evolve founder, Louise Halford says ‘Whilst a one-lawyer divorce isn’t the right approach for every separating couple, there are many times when a separating couple can reach an amicable agreement. With the right legal support, they may be suitable to instruct a single lawyer to help them secure a no-fault divorce, financial court order, or child arrangement order. If this can be done, it can save the couple significant legal costs, and reduce stress and delay. Eluned is specially trained in this approach and it is endorsed by Resolution, the national organisation for family lawyers.‘Evolve Family Law are proud to be leading the way in promoting an amicable divorce service through one lawyer divorce. We have always seen ourselves as a law firm with a difference and one that is committed to doing what is best for the client. For some, that is an amicable divorce. The streamlined service offered by Eluned will make getting divorced and sorting out a divorce financial settlement or parenting plan much easier and cheaper for some couples.‘If you have questions about how the one lawyer divorce service works then Eluned Roberts at our Holmes Chapel office can answer your queries and help you decide if resolving your separation amicably is a feasible option for you. Even if our one-lawyer divorce service isn’t the best option for you, Eluned can talk you through the alternatives including mediation, collaborative law, arbitration, or traditional court proceedings’.Eluned Roberts says ‘ I am delighted to have joined Evolve Family Law. I am very impressed by founders Robin Charrot and Louise Halford’s commitment to resolving family law disputes as amicably and as constructively as possible. From hilarious conversations between comedians to true crime stories and even self-help advice, there are podcasts available on just about every subject under the sun. Including, of course, business! Although there are countless shows which focus on business advice, top tips and discussions about the perks and pitfalls of running a company, there’s another side of the coin when it comes to business podcasting opportunities. If you want to help amplify your own brand’s voice, launching a podcast is one of the most engaging ways to be heard in 2023.So, what could a podcast do for your business? It’s an ideal chance to help bring your products and services to life by offering additional valuable content and information to your customers – and future customers! Plus, by (quite literally!) putting your own voice out there, a podcast could help your audience feel connected to the people behind the branding. We think it’s useful to look at a podcast as an additional branch of your online presence, and there are a million ways you can approach creating your show depending on exactly what you’d like to achieve.Let’s take a business like an independent gym, for example. There may be a personal trainer at the gym who has a natural flair for public speaking, a skill which can be easily adapted to hosting a podcast. A PT will know that one of the first steps to getting someone to sign up for training sessions is by sparking that initial motivation – a series of quick-fire, 15 minute podcast episodes focussing on inspiring fitness newbies to give the gym a go could be a great place to start. These episodes can be shared with prospective clients, promoted across social media and used to provide extra motivation to existing gym members. If the episodes are well received, there are endless options for get creative and taking the podcast to the next level – the audio world is your oyster. There are interesting elements of every business, and you never know who might be fascinated to look behind the scenes to get a deeper understanding of what you have to offer. It just takes a dash of personality, a sprinkle of technical know-how and a helping of interesting ideas to make podcasting an exciting new part of your business’ brand strategy! If you’re looking to start your podcasting journey this year but have no idea where or how to begin, we’re on hand to help. 38Days Out, Meals Out Reviews...I travelled to Altrincham for a very special lunch with my daughter. To a very rare 100% gluten free deli and cafe. It was amazing and so worth the 20min drive. As we checked over the cakes on the counter before taking a seat, I showed her the chalk board sign “Everything is Gluten Free”. Her eyes lit up as she took it in. My daughter loved the fact she could order anything on the menu and anything off the counter. It gave her the freedom that being gluten free steals on a daily basis. The menu is great and you can buy things to take home too as it’s also a deli. Breakfast is served all day and includes really interesting items like eggy bread and pancakes. There is a pastry section with a cheese and onion pie or one of their daily special pastries served with chips and baked beans/salad. A whole selection of sandwich fillings which can be in bread, a bagel, toast or as a salad. The Children’s menu is actually amazing too. Giving both hot and cold options. The prices for all items are very reasonable especially the fact that it’s all Gluten free which is always priced higher than “muggle food” which is what some Gluten Free people call normal food for fun.My daughter struggled to choose as there was so much she fancied. Finally she went for Hot Chick Bagel which was overspilling with fresh chicken smothered in a lemon drop chilli mayo. I ordered potato cake stack with ham, cheese and jalapeño. We shared the meals so we could both try each other’s. My daughter really enjoyed the bagel but especially liked the potato cake, so much so, she said she wants to order that next time we visit. For dessert we went to have a look at the cakes again. My daughter chose a slice of chocolate biscuit cake which was a rich mouse with chunks of biscuit in. The owner was really friendly and chatty. Our whole visit was really enjoyable and we would love to visit again soon. If you cant get to Altrincham they offer delivery to Manchester and Cheshire. 46WHEN Mr Richard Devaney, Founder and Life President of the Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival enthusiastically set about promoting the embryonic event in the early 1990s he was, like all of us, keen to make sure as many local venues as possible took part.Sadly, though, Richard could never be considered a great loss to the Diplomatic Service. In the case of the King’s Lock something went slightly awry and after a ‘goodwill’ visit from Mr Devaney, Maureen, the redoubtable landlady of the pub, made it clear that the Festival was persona non grata as far as she was concerned. She placed an embargo on members of the Festival committee visiting the pub under any circumstances. In effect she ‘barred’ the entire Festival and everyone and anything to do with it. The pub was a ‘Festival-free zone’.At that time Arthur Wood of Radio Stoke was touring the area on a narrowboat, broadcasting as he went. It was unfortunate indeed that when he made landfall in Middlewich, he should have chosen to moor near to the Kings Lock and invite local people to come along and talk to the radio listeners of North Staffordshire and South Cheshire.Actually, Arthur’s canal tour was a bit of a con. Although he talked about ‘having a good night on the boat last night, and a hearty breakfast cooked in the galley’, both he and his team were driving home each night, leaving the boat in the hands of its owner. All part of the magic of local radio, of course.Richard, of course, was there like a shot, notwithstanding Maureen’s edict, singing the praises of Middlewich’s new Festival and urging people to support.it and have a great time.Arthur, who was a friend of mine and included some of my poems and other writings in his ‘Homeground’ programme, asked after me and Richard phoned me, saying, ‘get down here quick and tell your mate about the Festival’.And so I did. Richard and I sat outside the very pub we had been banished from extolling the virtues of the Folk & Boat Festival and all the time casting nervous glances at the pub to see if Maureen, who must have been listening, might suddenly appear brandishing a shotgun or something.Fortunately Maureen knew which side her bread was buttered and cordial relations were soon resumed following our broadcast from behind enemy lines.Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories
