4Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local Middlewich!March holds a cherished place in my heart, evoking the enchanting landscapes and vibrant culture of Wales. While St. David's Day marks a notable occasion, there's a plethora of reasons to adore this time of year. With each passing day, the countryside transforms into a canvas of vibrant hues as elds burst into life with golden daodils, their cheerful blooms soaking up the increasingly frequent sunshine. As temperatures rise, the call of the coast becomes irresistible, drawing us towards captivating destinations like Llandudno. There's something magical about strolling along the seaside, breathing in the fresh sea air and basking in the warmth of the sun. Yet, amidst these spontaneous adventures, March also signals the time for meticulously planning visits to my in-laws' charming campsite in Pembrokeshire.Nestled just beyond Haverfordwest, along the picturesque route to Broad Haven, their campsite oers a tranquil retreat amidst rolling elds. A mere twenty-minute walk from South Cockett Caravan and Camping leads to the pristine shores of Broad Haven Beach—a hidden gem that ranks among the most breathtaking in the UK. For avid campers like myself, it's a destination that promises relaxation and rejuvenation. And should you choose to stay, a warm welcome awaits from Val and Jim, who will gladly assist in securing your pitch. In essence, March epitomiases the essence of Wales—captivating scenery, heartfelt hospitality, and a profound sense of tranquility that lingers long after you've bid farewell to its shores. As we embrace the wonders of March, I hope this month brings you abundant joy and memorable experiences, whether you're exploring the countryside, reconnecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying the beauty of the season.Katy xBridging The Gap, Mind Matters... 2023 was a whirlwind for BTG. This little charity, founded in Congleton, Cheshire went nationwide with a bang. I feel like I blinked and it happened. When BTG was founded we worked with one counsellor who did a single day per week. I did all the PT sessions out of the CrossFit gym, we paid the counsellor and I did the PT sessions for free because we had no funding. There were times I questioned if I was crazy for doing it. But I realised though that I had to make it work. Because these programs worked. They were saving peoples lives. It felt criminal not to share this with the world, and that’s how we took the next big step. We started working with SWANS CIC who had capacity to support more clients, I began travelling to other gyms locally and found JWC in Sandbach. There I met Heather who now plays a crucial role in the running of BTG. The chicken, the egg & the charity! Vicky,Bridging The Gap Mind MattersBut then it happened, people were hearing about this charity that gave free mental health programs, this charity that would actually take you by the hand and help you. Not fob you o with a leaet or a waitlist. A charity that helped you learn how to live a healthy, happy life. And they came, but the money didn’t. This is always the diculty with running a service like this, it’s the chicken and the egg, what comes rst, we need people to know we exist so we can be considered for fundraisers, donations, grants, sponsorship and any kind of support to keep the programs available, but the more people that know about us, the more people that come. It really is a never ending cycle. With 1 in 10 charities going bankrupt and disappearing, we’ve had to work harder than ever to keep going. It’s been tough, but we’re making it work, with some incredible donations and sponsorships from local business’s and organisations we’ve managed to provide support to over 200 people. There’s too many to list here in my 400 word count but I can say truly, we appreciate every single penny that’s donated at btg-mindmatters.org/corporate-sponsorship.You can’t put a price on someone’s life, but £750 is enough to give us a chance to save one.Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.Do you or someone you know need support with their mental health?

14Middlewich was a jigsaw of 100 pieces in my mind before coming to live here. During my last 30 years of living in France I had come to Middlewich to visit my family maybe once every two years, on average. I had been there enough though to appreciate the all the changes that had been made. The shops that had disappeared and others that had appeared. The new builds, housing estates that had been created, Pubs that had changed hands/names and beauty salons that had popped up in the high street where once there had been bakers and other local shops. I had also regularly walked lots of short sections of the canal. Sections of it, starting out from my parent’s house. I had almost always been accompanied and had ‘followed the leader’ appreciating the walk for its prettiness and originality compared to where I was living at the time, but not for what it fully represented for someone who lived here. Now, three months after moving in, I recognise other visitors to the area doing Girl About To wnbyHelenwhat I had done. Christmas being a time when families congregate, the canal walk was a perfect spot for observing those who were visiting Middlewich and enjoying a guided tour of the canal tow path with their family, in preparation of a guilt free mince pie attack at 5pm. It reminded me of my previous walks here, never knowing where the passages to the right or left of the canal lead o to, no feeling of familiarity with the sights, sounds and smells or a feeling of belonging.Walking in an area that is new to me has always been essential. It’s series of dierent steps (no pun intended) that take me from the initial exploring and losing myself stage, all the way to knowing the best walk to do on the day, according to the weather conditions and the number of kms I feel I could cover. In between the two they’ll always be numerous other local walking experiences of course and each will have equal importance in their own way. It’s just my personal process of integration I guess and without it I can’t feel at home.My rst outing along the canal had me struck by the unfamiliar and acrid smell of something unrecognizable but that turned out to be coal burning in the stoves of the narrow boats moored up on the canal side. Not feeling condent enough to step o the beaten track this time though I kept myself to a chilly 30 minutes fast walk along the canal in one direction then 30 minutes back. It was a start.

18Our photograph shows Middlewich station as it was in 1963, three years after our passenger service ended. Inset is one of the nameboards from the signal box, photographed shortly after it returned to its home town in the early 1990s.When the Middlewich Rail Link Campaign began in 1992 amboyant Middlewich resident George Dean took an immediate interest and supported the campaign in every way he could. One day he mentioned to me that he happened to know that his son Alan, who was now resident in Uttoxeter, was in possession of one of the old nameboards from the signalbox at Middlewich, which had been decommissioned in 1980.Wouldn’t it be a great idea, suggested George, if this nameboard could be returned to Middlewich to act as a kind of ‘mascot’ for the campaign?Middlewich’smemoriesByDave RobertsI agreed that it would, indeed, be a great idea and put the idea at the back of my mind until, a few weeks later George announced that the sign had been returned to Middlewich and was ready for collection.I well remember manhandling the thing through the streets of Middlewich. It’s of massive, solid, Victorian built-to-last wooden construction with heavy cast-iron letteringThis was the method used by the London & North Western Railway to make such signs. They made vast numbers of cast iron letters and to make a sign you simply selected the appropriate ones and screwed them on the board. Interestingly the company also used this method to make street signs. There are several in Crewe, and one next to Sandbach Station saying STATION VIEW.The only place I could think of to store the sign was in the cellar of the pub which was the campaign’s HQ at the time, the Boar’s Head in Kinderton Street, and this is where it ended up.Since those heady days the signboard has found a caring home, and has been on permanent loan to a member of the Rail Link Campaign committee, now sadly deceased.Incidentally there is now a modern colour light signal on the very spot where the old signal box used to be, which is, somehow, quite tting. One mystery remains: There were originally two signs - one on the Sandbach side of the box, and one on the Northwich side. It’s highly unlikely that only one sign was rescued back in 1980.So where did the other sign end up?

20During our recent move to a new house, we came across a treasure trove of memories that had been quietly accumulating within our old home for the past eight years. These memories were carefully packed away in cardboard boxes and stored in the attic. Over the years, as our son grew older, so did our collection of keepsakes. The attic, once an empty space, had become a storage area for our family’s history. It held a diverse assortment of mementos that represented pivotal moments in our lives. The attic was a silent witness to the passage of time, preserving toys gifted by relatives who were no longer with us, well-loved teddy bears waiting to be passed on to future generations, and artwork created by our son during his primary school years. Among the boxes, a stack of Truprint envelopes held a treasure trove of old photographs from the pre-digital era. One day, my husband and I decided to dive into this sea of nostalgia and rediscover our past through these snapshots. As we opened each envelope, we were transported back in time. The photographs brought back memories of Finding Storage SpacebyKatyfamily gatherings, vacations, and milestones. Some images made us laugh at the fashion trends of the past, while others brought tears to our eyes as we remembered the moments captured in those glossy prints. However, when we ventured into the attic to assess the extent of our belongings, we were met with a daunting sight. What we had initially thought were just a few boxes turned out to be a substantial collection of memories. Faced with the prospect of moving these cherished items to our new home, we began considering the option of renting a storage unit. Renting a storage unit made practical sense for preserving our household memories. Our lives had accumulated sentimental possessions that deserved safekeeping but were challenging to accommodate within our new living space. This decision was driven by several factors. Decluttering, renting a storage unit allowed us to declutter our new living space while ensuring that our meaningful possessions remained secure and accessible.Space Management, storage units oered a solution for maximising our living space while ensuring our memories remained intact. Seamless Move, whether relocating or downsizing, a storage unit facilitated the transition of our belongings. In conclusion, renting a storage unit was a practical and eective solution for preserving our household memories. It allowed us to declutter our living space while ensuring the safekeeping of sentimental belongings. These possessions held the stories of our lives and remained accessible for future generations to cherish. As we settled into our new home, we did so with the peace of mind that our memories were protected, ensuring that the legacy of our family continued.

30The Cafe at Higher Farm on Byley Road, Middlewich. Where you can enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast, while watching horses riding, with a views of the wide open Cheshire countryside.Like most, our Saturday mornings are busy with kids clubs. One is at footy and one is at ballet, so once we were all back home and changed we were all desperate for a yummy lunch. We popped over to The Cafe at Higher Farm after seeing it in @golocalmiddlewich and we are pleased we did. Lunch was so good and so reasonably priced.Even though it was 1pm, I had to have one of their all day cooked breakfasts. I chose the small size, which is still massive by the way. And at just £7.50 its a great price, too.Bacon, sausage, egg, beans, hash brown, mushrooms, plum tomato, baked beans, toast and got to love the black pudding! Yes all that for £7.50 and I couldn’t fault it one bit.Enough about my breakfast. What did the other members of my family order?Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out ReviewsMy husband got the broccoli, stilton & spinach soup with a bread roll. This was presented really nicely, and you could tell it was homemade and just £5.My little girl ordered beans on toast o the children’s menu. The children’s portion is 1 slice of toast for £2.50 which was perfect for her. The adult portion is 2 slices and £3.50 so if your child is a little hungrier this would be a good option. My daughter always likes it when this is an option on a menu.My eldest daughter, who has a good appetite, ordered the pulled pork panini. They had run out of panini bread, so they oered to do it as a toastie, which worked just as well. It was loaded full with pulled pork, bbq sauce, and nacho cheese. She added fries for an extra £2 making her meal £8. It really did look good with plenty of lling. It’s a nice little cafe sat within an award winning horse riding school. There are televisions on the wall showing the indoor horse arena, so if you have a child having lessons ,you can sit in the cafe and watch. We found it interesting to watch and there was more to look at outside too.Two walls of the cafe are completely glass so, it provides great views of the farm land surrounding the riding school. Down the hill you, can see the outside arena with even more lessons happening. I love nding new cafes like this. Supporting independent businesses is so important, especially when they are this good, and the sta were all so friendly. They have a good choice on the menu including some gorgeous looking burgers, jacket potatoes and wraps. I will denitely be back as I’ve been told their Sweet Chilli Chicken Wrap is highly recommended.• Open 7 days a week, 9am - 5pm• Eat in or take away• All day breakfasts• Lunch• Children’s menu• Great views• Watch horse riding lessons• Byley Lane, Middlewich. 34I’m a rm believer in the power of teamwork, even with competitors. In fact, I’ve forged some great friendships within my industry over the years. It might sound surprising, but supporting another business, even if we’re both eyeing the same clients, can be more rewarding than risky. Here’s why:Spurring Industry Growth: Think of it as planting seeds in a garden—you help your competitors grow, and in turn, your entire industry ourishes. By teaming up, we draw more attention and customers, making the marketplace livelier and more appealing for everyone involved.Shared Prosperity: Picture a potluck dinner—everyone brings something dierent to the table, and together, we all feast. As our industry expands, there’s more space for each of us to shine. This often opens doors for collaboration and cross-promotion, boosting success for all parties.Fueling Excellence: Competition isn’t just about winning; it’s about pushing each other to be the best we can be. The power of teamwork in businessBy keeping an eye on our rivals, we’re motivated to reach new heights. Plus, working alongside them gives us valuable insights into our strengths and weaknesses, spurring continuous growth and improvement.A Safety Net in Stormy Seas: Imagine being stranded in the middle of the ocean—it’s comforting to know there’s a life raft nearby. Similarly, in tough times, competitors can oer support instead of adding to the pressure. Building and maintaining good relationships ensures we have a safety net to fall back on when we need help or understanding. At the core, supporting your competitors isn’t about sacricing your own success—it’s about building a community where everyone thrives. Simple acts of kindness, like sharing their updates on social media or reaching out for a chat, can lay the groundwork for a mutually benecial relationship. After all, in the grand scheme of things, our competitors aren’t just rivals—they’re potential allies in our journey towards industry growth and excellence. So let’s embrace collaboration, celebrate each other’s victories, and pave the way for a brighter future together!

38078Whether recently arrived in the community or long-time residents, ours is truly a townscape to surprise... and not always so humble! Photographs are regularly shared online of ‘old-world’ Middlewich. A lot of us are fascinated, me included. Is this because some scenes look familiar – and some decidedly don’t? Probably. Our locality has an astonishing and long history. This series lets us time-hop. Here’s an urban medley, with pre-camera views too. For something unexpectedly elaborate take Lewin Street’s Victoria Building, whose datestone reads 1897. Images were proudly captured, as it started life as the “Victoria Technical Schools and Free Library”. Above the main door are false balcony, and intriguing moulded friezes. Adorning the rooine are further fancy features… gable, balustrade rail, lantern, even a cupola. Thanks to the newly modern miracle of street lighting the original open front space displayed an elegant gas lamp. Middlewich’s HeritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth SmalleyAnother grand building? Yes, o Greendale Drive, now a care home. Flaunting white uted Ionic columns and curved entrance portico, the double-storey ‘Manor House’ presided, nearly two hundred years ago, over a country estate. A then highly-fashionable ‘Greek key’ design graced outer walls whilst inside, luxuries included a sweeping staircase to upper oors. Large-windowed parlours overlooked picturesque grounds. A semi-circular drive allowed for carriages to ferry around family and guests. The wooded exterior with pond, pasture and parkland was perfect for a genteel residence. Parkland? Denitely a long tradition in the local landscape. An obvious change though is loss of much of the former nurseries, orchard, market gardens, park and woodland both outside and within Middlewich. For centuries the built bits of this tiny town were mainly strung along the ribbons of Kinderton, Lewin, Queen, and Wheelock Streets - Hightown to Newton Bank. On the rural western edge, St Anne’s Road crossed Newton Heath ’mini-district’ with its handful of dwellings. Now containing a veterinary surgery, here in the 17th century was ample space for a grammar school. And - on the same heath a bowling green might seem unlikely - but one did exist! Houses arranged in a curve backed on to this spacious green, eventually absorbed into dense housing plots west of Darlington Street.Denitely a prestige possession (well before photography!) - medieval Middlewich’s walled hunting park. Set in Kinderton/Sproston this deer reserve lay south-east of the moated manor-house – aristocratic seat of Barons of Kinderton from the early 1200’s. Even into the early 19th century there was a “magnicent thicket of oak trees left and right along Holmes Chapel Road”. Surprises on our doorstep? I think so.

46If you are a parent or grandparent involved in a child arrangement order application there is a legal requirement to keep the court proceedings condential. At Evolve Family Law our solicitors understand that in an age of sharing how we feel, parents may feel there is nothing more natural to post on social media about the court proceedings concerning their child. It might be to vent frustration at the contents of their ex-partner’s court statement or to express disbelief at what was said at an interim hearing of a child arrangement or specic issue order application.Problems with children law proceedings and condentiality are not limited to social media posts. If you have received a report from a CAFCASS ocer tasked with making a recommendation on the future living arrangements for your Let’s talk legal...ByEvolve Family Lawchild, and you don’t agree with the report, it is tempting to go through the report with a family member or a friend over a coee or beer. You may not intend the conversation to go any further but invariably something is said and it eventually gets back to your ex-partner.You may think ‘so what’ as what you said was true but it is the sharing of court papers, such as statements or reports, or revealing what was said in children law proceedings that could get you into trouble. That’s because court rules forbid any party in children law proceedings from disclosing information about the court case unless authorised to do so by the family law judge. The idea behind the rule is to protect your child from gossip and to keep what should be private to you and your family condential. As family law solicitors we recognise that it can be stressful to be involved in children law proceedings and you may feel the need to sound o. Often the consequences of revealing statements led in court proceedings are unintended but it can change the approach of the court to a child arrangement order application. For example, a judge might question your approach to parenting more closely if they think you have outed court rules on condentiality and cannot see the harm this may do to your child.Keeping condence is hard work but as family law solicitors it is something that is ingrained in us. If you can’t trust your family lawyer to keep things condential then who can you trust? What we say is that if you are involved in a children law application, or you are a grandparent or friend being used as a sounding board, it is crucial to keep the secret, whether or not you agree with the court condentiality rules and the reasons behind them.
