4Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local Middlewich!Over the recent two months, my life has witnessed a whirlwind of change, making it quite a challenge to keep pace. One of the most monumental shifts was our relocation to a new home, an endeavour that was as demanding as it was transformative. Often cited as one of life's most stressful experiences, my encounter with moving has resoundingly armed this belief. This event triggered an extensive de-cluttering phase, for which I owe gratitude to the local Facebook giveaway groups and St. Luke's on Wheelock Street for their willingness to accept children's toys. The astonishing quantity of items we had gathered over the years was a revelation. The process involved countless trips to the waste disposal site, renting a skip, and despite this, we still managed to ll the loft of our new home. Although we are progressively settling in, the process is ongoing and evolving.Another signicant development was receiving a diagnosis of ADHD in December. At the age of 46, realising that I have Attention Decit Hyperactivity Disorder, which often presents dierently in women, was enlightening. Looking back on a lifetime of feeling persistently overwhelmed, this diagnosis brings a sense of understanding that I previously lacked. Although I wish this realization had come earlier, to foster a better comprehension of myself, the insight I now possess is liberating. My journey of learning about ADHD is in its infancy, and with every piece of information I uncover, I nd more aspects that resonate with my experiences. This diagnosis has opened a new chapter in my life, lled with self-awareness and potential. As I navigate this path of discovery and adaptation, my outlook towards the future is brimming with positivity and a new-found appreciation of my unique strengths and capabilities.I took forward to the discoveries the next few months bring and I hope you have a year of new beginnings too.Katy xMiddlewich's heritage 8Take a fresh look at your business in 2024 14Let's talk legal... 8Hoping for New Year luck and prosperity? Of course! Wishes for wealth commonly happen at the turn of the calendar, and rituals to attract abundance are many and varied. Money, not surprisingly, features a lot. Piling coins into a bowl, or maybe including something red are just two examples. But how does this relate to local heritage? Well, it’s the coin part that counts. This connects us directly with Middlewich’s long story – not only to the late medieval town but a modern street-name too. And not red, but silver… Cue a little archaeology on Lewin Street’s west side, opposite Wych-House Lane. Underneath the present day surface are deposits from settlement as far back as the 13th century. That shows just how long the area has been busy! Preserved within earthy layers was a small yet deceptively signicant item: an old penny. In changing forms, the not-so-humble penny had circulated as Middlewich’s heritageHistory article byJulie Elizabeth Smalleypretty much the standard coin for day-to-day transactions since Anglo-Saxon times. Important? Yes, because this one, dated to around 1280 and made of silver, was of early ‘long-cross’ design. So why ‘long cross’? To make ‘small change’ minted pennies could if required be cut in half (for ha’pennies) or even quarters (to create farthings). Opportunists saw chance to prot by clipping edges and melting down the collected silver to sell on. As it was illegal something had to be done, hence bringing in the longer-limbed Christian cross motif, with rounded ends. This time the image was made to extend right to the rim - a version which continued to be issued for just over 200 years. The particular coin found in Middlewich was from Scotland, then a separate monarchy ruled by Alexander III. His English counterpart Edward I was known, unatteringly, as Hammer of the Scots. What adventures and travels might this penny have had? Today in the same place the coin was recovered stands… Longcross Court, a tting yet slightly mysterious nod to an intriguing local nd.Whoever lost that silver penny from over 700 years ago might have thought luck wasn’t on their side. Fortunately though for those who love links to the past, we have solid-object reminders of people who were living, travelling and working here before us. Middlewich has a wealth of artefacts from its extensive history, this article marking an amazing number 125 in the series exploring it. Also, anyone on social media will surely notice, from more recent times, fascinating photographic records, which I love. Let’s keep on sharing and exploring! Happy New Year 2024!

14Quite often, the new year brings a renewed focus and positivity for all of us. We look to the next 365 days as a chance to press the reset button and change some of our lifestyles. It is, traditionally, a time of change. For businesses, it is no dierent. I’m not saying that if your business is running a coee shop that you should decide to open an estate agency suddenly but whilst the mood of change is front and centre in your thoughts, it’s a good time to dust o your original business plans and see what can be achieved and what has to change. It can be small things like looking at your shop front outside. Anything that can be made just a little better? Even a small improvement is an improvement. Have you looked at your branding recently? A fresh look for a new year can be a positive thing and act as a springboard for other plans. But also, in this digital world, staying connected to the community you Take a fresh look at your business in 2024 Rich Wilcockmost likely serve, looking at your social media and understanding where it can be improved can work wonders for engagement. It acts as a window into your world and no matter what kind of business you run, people will be interested in what you’re oering if you show them. In fact, 86% of loyal customers will refer others to a business and many of those will do that via social media now.And as we are all in that mood for change, now is the time to look at the things you’ve been putting o for a little while. Revisiting your processes internally is a good start. Where can those little things you do every day be improved. It never needs to be huge wholesale changes, we all know how busy we are running the actual business and often, it is not needed, but taking a step back can certainly mean taking a step forward.Fundamentally though, take the opportunity to write down some goals you want for your business for 2024. A resolution if you will. It doesn’t even have to be something so rigid. A word that you want your business to encapsulate for the year ahead can be just as eective. But write them down nonetheless and make sure you look back on them at stage through the year. Focus is important. As a community, we have a role to play. Near where I live, there is a farm shop which proudly states it serve the best apple pies in Cheshire. I’ve meant to pop in as I’ve driven past for the last four months and buy one. Alas, I’ve yet to do so. So, take this opportunity during the traditionally quiet couple of months and visit some of the fantastic businesses we have in this part of the world. I know I’ll be tucking into an apple pie this weekend.

20If you are a parent or grandparent involved in a child arrangement order application there is a legal requirement to keep the court proceedings condential. At Evolve Family Law our solicitors understand that in an age of sharing how we feel, parents may feel there is nothing more natural to post on social media about the court proceedings concerning their child. It might be to vent frustration at the contents of their ex-partner’s court statement or to express disbelief at what was said at an interim hearing of a child arrangement or specic issue order application.Problems with children law proceedings and condentiality are not limited to social media posts. If you have received a report from a CAFCASS ocer tasked with making a recommendation on the future living arrangements for your Let’s talk legal...Evolve Family Lawchild, and you don’t agree with the report, it is tempting to go through the report with a family member or a friend over a coee or beer. You may not intend the conversation to go any further but invariably something is said and it eventually gets back to your ex-partner.You may think ‘so what’ as what you said was true but it is the sharing of court papers, such as statements or reports, or revealing what was said in children law proceedings that could get you into trouble. That’s because court rules forbid any party in children law proceedings from disclosing information about the court case unless authorised to do so by the family law judge. The idea behind the rule is to protect your child from gossip and to keep what should be private to you and your family condential. As family law solicitors we recognise that it can be stressful to be involved in children law proceedings and you may feel the need to sound o. Often the consequences of revealing statements led in court proceedings are unintended but it can change the approach of the court to a child arrangement order application. For example, a judge might question your approach to parenting more closely if they think you have outed court rules on condentiality and cannot see the harm this may do to your child.Keeping condence is hard work but as family law solicitors it is something that is ingrained in us. If you can’t trust your family lawyer to keep things condential then who can you trust? What we say is that if you are involved in a children law application, or you are a grandparent or friend being used as a sounding board, it is crucial to keep the secret, whether or not you agree with the court condentiality rules and the reasons behind them.

24It was my sister in laws big 40th birthday, so she was after a special place to celebrate with her friends. It was an easy decision when wanting a place a little bit dierent and that extra bit special. Chimichangos, with its fabulous decor and equally fabulous food, stands out on Middlewich’s high street as a great place to eat.We attended for a mid week meal. It’s a cute little place that doesn’t have a lot of tables. This isn’t a bad thing as it adds to the ambience, but you do have to make sure you book because of it.The small and cosy atmosphere got lled with laughter with our group, as we do like to have a giggle. The fact that we were all donning massive sombreros while sat at the table did add to our jokes. A cheeky mid week cocktail was the perfect start to our celebration, and at Chimichangos, they have a fab selection to choose from. It’s hard to know where to start when describing the food. It’s a Days Out & Meals Out reviewsJenny,Days Out and Meals Out Reviewsplace that prides itself on everything being made in house. With such bold and interesting avours. If you like things spicy, then you won’t be disappointed. Their chilli beef packs a punch. The starters selection is impressive with homemade nachos (none of that opening a packet of crisps), street tacos, prosecco battered haloumi, spicy squid or chicken wings are to name a few. There is a starter to suit every taste. The mains equally have a great selection. I personally went for the chilli beef enchiladas. It was gorgeous, and my sides of garlic mushrooms & spicy rice complimented it perfectly. All the mains come with a choice of 2 sides & you can choose your lling too. So whether it’s a Burrito, Chimichanga, or a Quesadilla or after, you can then choose between nine dierent llings, including beef, chicken, and a few veggie options.Their avours are amazing. You could never say it’s bland, that’s for sure. If you don’t like spice, they do have milder options. Watch out, though, as the portions are massive. Most of us managed squeezed in a pudding. The classic Mexican desert of churros is what a lot of us ordered. There is also sweet nachos and a homemade chocolate fudge cake to choose from. The children menu looks great too. They have an option to join in on their own mini Mexican burrito or they can play it save with chicken chunks or pizza. The kids menu is served till 7pm so its makes the perfect place to come for a family meal. Its a great place to introduce your kids to new and interesting cuisine.• Yummy Mexican food, cocktails and sombreros• Pre book your table• 11 Wheelock St, Cheshire, Middlewich CW10 9AG You can nd more reviews on my Facebook page & Instagram, search ‘Days Out and Meals Out’078

30Imagine transforming the entire mood of a room with just one unexpected stroke of colour – on your ceiling. That’s precisely what we did in our new home. Recently moving house presented us with the perfect, albeit exhausting, chance to give our new place a thorough makeover, painting it from top to bottom. Our journey through each room was not conned to just the four walls. We saw our ceilings as blank canvases, waiting to be infused with life. Our colour choices were adventurous: deep sage greens echoing the tranquillity of a forest, pastel purples like the soft light of dawn, dusty pinks reminiscent of blooming desert roses, and warm greys as comforting as a rainy afternoon. Taking the bold step to include the ceilings in our colour story transformed each room, oering a narrative in hues most wouldn’t dare to attempt. As visitors came and went, they quickly grasped the To paint, or not to paint, that is the ceiling!Dave Robertsimpact of our somewhat unconventional choice. This got me thinking: why is such a design choice considered unusual? Shouldn’t it be more common? Decorating your ceiling, often referred to as the ‘5th Wall,’ is a trend that’s gaining traction in 2024.For spaces that are poorly lit or have low ceilings, softer whites or pale pastels can work wonders. These shades, especially when they complement your wall colours, can create an illusion of space and light. On the other hand, for a touch of luxury, deep blues or rich greens can add a sense of glamour. A glossy nish on ceilings can dene a space, enhancing architectural features and creating a sleek, modern look. However, it’s important to remember that surfaces with more shine can show imperfections more easily, so a smooth, well-prepared surface is essential. When it comes to choosing between glossy or at nishes for ceilings, it largely depends on personal preference. However, the reective quality of gloss paint is benecial in bouncing more light around a room, which can be particularly advantageous in darker spaces. Before you embark on painting your ceiling, consider these factors:• Evaluate the style that suits you: Bold colours aren’t a necessity. Even light or earthy shades can have a signicant impact.• Consider the room’s size: Darker colours can create a cosy feeling but might not be suitable for smaller rooms as they can make them appear smaller.• Think about the lighting: Dark colours can absorb light, so ensure your room can maintain a pleasant ambiance.• Be bold if you wish: Rooms with warm, ambient lighting can be excellent candidates for bolder ceiling colours. In summary, painting your ceiling is a daring yet rewarding choice that can vastly change a room’s atmosphere. It reects personal taste and can add a layer of sophistication to your decor. So next time you plan a room revamp, don’t overlook your ceiling – it’s a canvas that oers limitless creative potential!

I particularly liked the mediation approach supported by Eluned and Evolve.’’SB – 2 weeks ago‘’The service was excellent from the very first phone call, visit to the office and via email. Chris responded in a friendly, timely manner and answered my questions fully and in such a way that was easily understood without lots of legal jargon. Chris asked the right questions to explore the answers to ensure that nothing had been forgotten or missed. I would fully recommend using Evolve Law and in particular Chris.’’Anonymous client - June 2023‘’Rachael made me feel at ease and welcome from the offset. 36“Happy new year”. I must have heard that said a dozen times if not more in the last few weeks, of course I always smile and exchange pleasantries, but within that brief exchange I take a moment to look at the person and wonder, will they really have a happy new year? With 1 in 4 adults now known to be struggling with their mental health, I know the chances are that during my day I’ve wished a happy new year to at least one person who’s struggling. I often wonder how dierent the world would be if mental ill health was visible. Maybe a small mark, or blemish, just a subtle sign that someone was struggling.Would we treat it dierently? Be able to identify and manage it sooner? Would there be adequately funded services? Would less people lose their lives? Would people wear their mark as a badge of honour; proud of their survival instead of shameful of their suering? Whilst you might not be able to see if someone is struggling you can sometimes notice it when they talk. So I’ve started taking a little more time to ask people if they have plans for the year ahead, what they’re looking forward to, and it’s opened the conversation of what i’ve been up to and what I’m looking forward to, and of course I often lead with what’s planned for BTG, it’s like a gentle nudge, that if they’re not quite ok, they don’t have to speak to me about it, Can you help? Vicky,Bridging The Gap Mind Mattersbut there’s a condential service right there that’s available if they need it. One of the hardest yet most exciting parts of BTG’s growth in the last year is the development of our team and our individual roles.I used to be the person wearing all of the hats which I knew was never sustainable as we grew.Relinquishing some of that responsibility would be both relieving whilst also slightly heart wrenching. Like watching your child get all grown up!So I had to make a decision about whether I wanted to sit at the top and oversee the goings on, or be on the ground doing the day to day operations. It was a no brainer for me, I love helping people. It’s not possible to put into words the fullment and pride that comes with contributing to what we do here. Knowing you helped save someone’s life, every person is a daughter, brother, father or friend. It’s a feeling that can’t be bought with money, it’s non comparable and you just don’t get it, until you do. It’s what I’ve known I wanted to do since I recovered from my breakdown and founded the charity. So it is what I do. My main role now is physical therapy onboarding and public relations.I still get to directly help people, I travel all over the UK hand picking the most incredible community focused gyms and local groups and register them to provide sessions for us. I also do a lot of mental health speaking events for local businesses and organisations. These usually result in 1 or 2 people getting some help through the charity. If you would be interested in hosting a talk for your team please do get in touch. As the charity continues to grow we’re looking for more volunteers to assist us, if you have some exible time available and are looking for something incredible to do with it, just visit our website www.BTG-mindmatters.org.uk and ll out the “get more info” form expressingyour interest. Take a look at www.BTG-mindmatters.org to complete an application.Do you or someone you know need support with their mental health?

40You can still go ‘Down Bill Hewitt’s’ and it’s still a pleasant walk from King Street to the Big Lock. The public footpath which once ran across the middle of the area has been diverted to run alongside the River Croco and still retains a lot of its charm. The area is now lled with housing, with the roads being given names which reect the Roman heritage of the area; Hadrian Way, Samian Close, Flavian Close, Fossa Close etc, and people living in these modern houses are actually living in the oldest part of Middlewich, the Roman settlement which grew up along the fort’s access road. Industries serving the fort lined this road and my Dad, Arthur Roberts, once dug up the lawn at number 33 King Street (much to my Mother’s dismay) to prove the point. For many years our Middlewich’smemoriesDave Robertsgarage was lled with boxes containing hundreds of wedge-shaped Roman nails from the iron works which once stood there.Dad was one of the founders of the Middlewich Archaeological Society and he can be seen in our photo, kneeling alongside local schoolteacher Ken Laundon, investigating a site in King Street in 1968. Dad is on the right. This site, too, has since been built on.Early excavations in the area were led by J.D. Bestwick of Keele University and our town has been described as one of the most extensively researched Roman settlements in the country.Obviously one of the reasons the Romans built their fort here was because of the close proximity and availability of brine to make salt. When Bill Hewitt’s was our playground there was a more recent but still long-disused manifestation of this industry, in the form of the ruined remains of the Kinderton Salt Works alongside the river. Historian Allan Earl tells us that this works, which had been disused since at least 1898, was supplied from brine pits in the area by a unique and complicated system involving a pump driven by a waterwheel. In the 1960s the works was nothing more than a pile of rubble and supplied ammunition for the periodic King Street vs Webbs Lane battles, in which kids from both streets would hurl stones and bricks at each other across the canal. Why this happened I never knew but I joined in because, to coin a phrase, when in Rome, you do as the Romans do!
