Anne and I collaborated on several projects in Middlewich, where her commitment was always towards the betterment of the community. She was exceptionally hardworking, kind, and will be greatly missed. On behalf of myself, Matt, and David at Go Local, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Anne's family. As Christmas draws near, we at Go Local Middlewich are excited to celebrate the culmination of another remarkable year. It's been over six years since I took the helm of this magazine from Bernice Walmsley, who had wonderfully nurtured and expanded this special publication dedicated to our community. Middlewich, a town deeply ingrained in our hearts, has been home to our business for nearly a decade. During this time, we've made countless friends and felt the strong support of this incredible community. Despite the rollercoaster ride of past years, we remain eternally thankful for the unwavering strength and positive feedback from our readers and advertisers. This festive season, I'm reminded of the warmth and resilience of the Middlewich community, qualities that have been the backbone of our journey together. As we wrap up this year and look forward to new beginnings, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a joyous Christmas to each of you. Let’s embrace the festive spirit, cherishing the moments that bring us together. I eagerly anticipate connecting with you again in our January edition. Merry Christmas, and here's to continuing our journey in the New Year!01477 518 252 • golocalmiddlewich.comfor advertising information www.archpublications.comKaRemember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go Local!Go Local Middlewich is part ofArch Publications Charity Partner 2023/24

8NOVEMBER and December’s pre-Christmas period means postage, parcels, last dates for guaranteed deliveries… and how letters and cards seem to appear less often! A postal system has operated here since at least the early 1820’s. Its story over the past two centuries is surprising and really quite impressive. So, before email was invented, how did this town manage movement of messages? And who were those pioneering postmasters and postmistresses? Perhaps some were your ancestors.Middlewich’s mail services have always had changing roles – and locations. Exactly two hundred years ago Henry Chatterton was local Post Master. Schedules at fi rst were pretty simple. Post to and from Sandbach and surrounding areas would arrive and be collected at seven o’clock each morning, whilst for Knutsford district it was half past three every afternoon. Then, a major overhaul nationally made the mail service an effi cient - and highly popular – machine. And of course, in 1840 an important institution arrived - postage stamps!Selling those ‘Penny Blacks’, Middlewich’s Post Offi ce in 1850 was on Lower Street with female manager Elizabeth Nicklin. (Lower Street is long since demolished but prior to St Michael’s Way once skirted the parish church.) Collections and deliveries for as far afi eld as London and Ireland were now scheduled for a remarkable fi ve precise times each per day. The fi rst batch arrived at 4:30 am! That wasn’t all. Covering the ground, presumably in all weathers, a “foot post from Holmes Chapel”, arrives at 7,P.M. and is despatched at 6,A.M.’. Dedication.Relocation to Hightown by 1874 meant the Post Offi ce – now the modernised Postal Telegraph Offi ce - dealt also in money orders and operated a Savings Bank. Postmaster George Buckley oversaw an expanding, almost ‘open-all-hours’ enterprise. Banking and annuity business was transacted daily from 9 to 6… even on Saturdays until an astonishing 8pm. Around 1892 this work was continued by Mrs Annie Buckley when an additional product line - government insurance - was sold. By the time of the First World War, and with an even fancier new-tech title, the ‘Post and Telephonic Express Delivery Offi ce’ was under the control of Alfred Bee and had moved to Wheelock Street. Letters arrived from ‘London & all parts’ at a confi dent ten past three in the early morning, as well as three times each afternoon. The writing public was clearly very active, and their output increasingly far-fl ung. Customers were now advised their ‘letters should have Cheshire added’. Not long back the post offi ce was on Lewin Street before again re-establishing in Wheelock Street. More changes ahead? Defi nitely.Middlewich’s heritage...Juli Elizabet Sma e

12078Katy meets... Signature HealthARIANA Torti is our spotlight local professional this month, based at her clinic called Signature Health, located at Cheshire Lasers on Wheelock Street. Her expertise as a Naturopathic Osteopath caught my attention, resonating with me personally because of my ongoing battle with lower back pain.Ariana brings together the medical learning and hands-on healing methods of osteopathy with the pillars of naturopathy, founded on teaching individuals to feel the best version of themselves. She goes beyond symptomatic pain relief, treating the root causes of pain by providing tailored lifestyle and dietary guidance along with prescribing natural remedies. What really distinguishes her practice is her use of K-Laser therapy. Over her years of practice and training, Ariana has become proficient in this advanced, non-invasive technology, which is trusted by flagship NHS hospitals such as St Thomas’ and Guy’s Hospital, which ranges from treating post-operative wounds to chronic complex regional pain syndrome. Laser therapy, as discovered by a student of Einstein in 1967, uses low-level lasers to encourage cellular repair and ease pain across various conditions. K-Laser therapy has a wide range of applications: Relieves Pain and Inflammation; It’s particularly effective for a range of long-term conditions, including arthritis. Aids Muscle and Joint Recovery; It speeds up the healing of muscle injuries and helps joints regain function. Supports Soft Tissue Injuries; It’s helpful for tendonitis, sprains, frozen shoulder and induration following breast cancer treatment. Fosters Wound Healing; It helps reduce scarring of fresh wounds and speeds up the healing process following tissue inury or surgery. Tackles Back and Neck Pain; It provides relief for back and neck issues, even for chronic problems such as spinal stenosis. Repairs Nerve Damage; It’s beneficial for nerve-related conditions like neuropathies. Facilitates Sports Injury Recovery; It aids athletes such as Rafael Nadal in getting back to their sports faster or musicians and ballerinas to recover in between frequent on-stage performances. Manages Syndromes; It can treat conditions like IBS, carpal tunnel syndrome and plantar fasciitis.K-Laser therapy aids healing by; Stimulating the release of natural painkillers (endorphins). Lowering inflammation and swelling, helping the body recover more quickly. Speeding up the repair of tissues like muscles and tendons with collagen boost. Boosting blood flow to bring more oxygen to the affected areas. Minimising scar tissue formation for better recovery after cancer surgery for instance. Relaxing muscles to enhance flexibility and ease pain. The effectiveness of K-Laser therapy is subject to its frequency, and individual repair responses. K-Laser therapy is typically combined with osteopathic techniques and nutritional support, all orchestrated for optimal health outcomes.Ariana’s path to her current profession is deeply personal. Over a career spanning from teaching to global account management, she struggled with chronic pain and fatigue syndrome, which led to a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia. Unsuccessful with conventional medical approaches, she retrained to understand the root causes of her “Fibromyalgia” and support others with debilitating conditions, ultimately leading to her professional dedication. She holds a Master’s Degree in Medical Sciences from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine and has earned accolades in Visceral Osteopathy and Clinical Psychology. Her post-graduate specialism is personalised healthcare through genetic and digestive testing. Her warm and engaging manner makes it easy to open up, as I discovered when sharing my own back pain issues with her. The K-Laser treatment she demonstrated on me was reassuringly gentle and pain-free.Ariana’s rich background, beginning in Paris and stretching through London to her current base in Cheshire, is reflected in her diverse practice. She holds two clinic days a week at Cheshire Lasers, a renowned hub for health professionals with an excellent reputation.Ariana Torti’s personal health journey has informed her empathetic approach to patient-centred care, embracing a holistic approach to wellness that focuses on root causes and quality of life. Her work at Cheshire Lasers brings together her international experience and local respect, offering state-of-the-art treatments like K-Laser in a community trusted for its health expertise.Katy

20Winter plants with Brian Lowe...AS the seasons shift, the promise of shorter days and longer nights looms. But fear not, for there are ways to keep our homes vibrant and lively, even as winter takes hold. To uncover the secrets of winter gardening, I met with Brian Lowe at Sparks Lane Nurseries, a master of creating stunning floral displays that defy the dreariness of the colder months.Brian, amidst crafting vibrant tubs and hanging baskets destined for local establishments, greets me with a flourish of garden gloves. His creations, a symphony of colours and textures, are not just displays but stories told through petals and leaves. He introduces me to a selection of plants and flowers specifically chosen for their frost resilience. Our first stop is the winter heather, or Erica carnea. This modest evergreen shrub, brimming with small but vivid flowers ranging from whites and pinks to reds, purples, and golds, is a testament to the adage ‘strength in numbers’. Its petite blossoms en masse create a lively tapestry in gardens. Growing up to 50 cm, winter heather is versatile, thriving in beds, containers, and baskets, continuing its vibrant display until April.Next, Brian highlights the unsung heroes of winter hanging baskets: pansies and violas. These hardy blooms are perfect for the cold, offering a spectrum of colours from deep purples and blues to vibrant yellows and oranges. They stand resilient against frost and light snow, always eager to greet the winter sun. Their compact and bushy nature makes them ideal for hanging baskets, where they create a lush, overflowing effect with minimal maintenance. Regular deadheading and ensuring moist soil are all they ask for.Beyond their aesthetic appeal, pansies and violas also support winter-active pollinators, providing a habitat and food source. Their presence in your garden is not just a visual treat but also an ecological boon, reminding us of nature’s resilience. Finally, Brian shares his secret touch in creating his renowned baskets: a mix of ornamental grasses. These add an extra layer of texture and a splash of contrasting colour, elevating his designs to more than just floral arrangements but pieces of living art.As I leave Sparks Lane Nurseries, I’m inspired by Brian’s passion and expertise. His winter displays are more than just decorations; they’re beacons of life and colour, brightening the darkest of winter days.Katy

24Embracing morning pages...AS the sun gently rises, each new day offers the opportunity for a fresh start. In the quiet moments of an early morning, before the world cracks into full throttle, lies a powerful ritual known as ‘morning pages’. Credited to Julia Cameron, an American teacher and writer of many guises, morning pages is a practice championed by many.Simply put, morning pages invite us to engage in an unfiltered stream-of-consciousness writing that sets the tone for the day ahead. It helps you untangle the web of thoughts that may have accumulated overnight and opens space for fresh insights and ideas. How to Use Morning Pages- The aim is to write three pages of free-flowing thoughts as soon as you wake up. Without concern for grammar, punctuation or coherence, you let your thoughts spill onto the paper as quickly or as slowly as they form. The pages serve as a canvas for introspection and creative expression. The words are not meant to be justified or logical but rather raw, unapologetic thoughts.Penned words can create a sense of purpose for the day, act as a vessel to empty your head or a chest to collect inspiration from dreams. Seems like a lot, right?Benefits of Starting Your Day with Morning Pages - As with any form of journalling, there are many benefits, including:• Clarity and Focus: using morning pages as a brain dump clears mental clutter and paves the way for increased clarity and focus throughout the day.• Emotional Release: writing down your thoughts can be cathartic, helping you release lingering worries and promoting positive emotional wellbeing.• Creative Exploration: engaging in unfiltered writing encourages creative thinking and the discovery of new ideas, making it a valuable tool for anyone seeking solutions.• Self-Reflection: having a private space for self-reflection enables you to explore feelings, aspirations and desires without judgment.Try Morning Pages for Yourself - Before engaging in any other activity, find a quiet spot and dedicate at least 15 minutes to writing three pages of stream-of-consciousness thoughts. Focus on the process rather than the outcome, allowing your thoughts to flow freely without restraint. Try these questions to get started: what thoughts and feelings greet you as you wake? What do you hope to accomplish today? What’s been playing on your mind? What can you recall from your dreams?Morning pages is a practice that encourages you to embrace the present moment, releasing the mental clutter that may hinder productivity, creativity and enjoyment of the day ahead. Over time, it will improve creative flow and personal growth.Next month, we’ll look at the benefits of evening reflection writing..Anna WoolliscroftYou can find me on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook: @JournallingWithAnna

Days Out, Meals Out Reviews...AFTER flicking through the fantastic Go Local last month, I saw Plumleys advert and it reminded me that I hadn’t been for a while so I headed over to Plumleys for a look around their garden centre and to treat my mum to a yummy lunch.Plumleys is a family business located just outside the beautiful town of Knutsford. Owned and run by Gold RHS winning designer Andrew Yates and his wife Eloise. The garden centre is the home of a fantastic, large plant nursery selling everything you could ever need for your garden. Outside, there are bedding & pot plants, fruit trees, herbs, planters and pots galore. Inside, there are all the tools you would need to tend to your garden, whether it’s a new trowel or spade you’re looking for or some cute signs to label up your seedlings. The friendly, knowledgeable staff are on hand to help and advise should you require.Inside the shop we also had a good look around all the lovely home accessories and gifts they had on offer, it was a treasure trove of lovely items by the make of Gisela Graham plus many other gorgeously made items. They had a beautiful display of autumn and Christmas items in stock. There was plenty of choice of house plants, too, ranging from big palms to the cutest cactuses.Walking through the shop, you will soon get to the Cafe at Plumleys. This cafe has cosy indoor seating with a real log fire set in the middle. On warmer days, you can sit outside, which is in a large poly tunnel, so still protected from the rain. It’s a great menu, offering lots of choices. Including breakfasts, sandwiches and toasties but not just your standard fillings, I spotted a chicken, bacon and egg club! Plus their ever popular burgers and lovely warming meals like Bourguignon Pie and loaded fries. My mum ordered their quiche, which was salmon and dill, served with roasted new potatoes and creamed leeks. And on a day when it was cold and wet outside, this meal was seriously tasty comfort food.I went for Plumleys Welsh Rarebit. Granary toast loaded with Black Sheep Ale rarebit sauce topped with streaky bacon. The cake counter was rather tempting with treacle tarts, a white chocolate, almond and blueberry cheesecake and slices of school chocolate crunch. The Cafe at Plumleys was in the list of top ten cafés and coffee shops in Mid Cheshire in the Northwich Guardian in August and I can totally tell why.Obviously, I will be heading back soon, just so I can try out another yummy lunch from their menu...Jenny, Days Out and Meals Out Reviews Garden Centre, Home & Gift Shop and Cafe at Plumleys serving gorgeous food.Open Mon – Sat 9:30 – 4:30. 46SEASON’S greetings from The Navigation Inn. Several copies of this exquisite little Christmas Card have survived the 106 years since they were sent out during the Great War.We’re grateful to Pat Nancollas, a former Middlewich Carnival Queen, and Malcolm Hough of the House of Feathers who supplied the copy shown here. The card, which was sent from the Navigation Inn in Middlewich by Mrs Ida Malpass is tiny, measuring only 10cm by 7cm (approximately 4 inches by 2 1/2 inches), but its lack of size is made up for by the elaborate way it has been made. Its sentimentality is, perhaps, partly explained by the fact that the Great War was in its penultimate year. Many postcards of the same era also carry similar messages showing a collective yearning for some sort of security after long years of war.A card such as this would have been expensive to produce and purchase and only the well-to-do, or people ‘in trade’, such as Mrs Malpass, and her husband George, landlord of The Navigation from 1901-1928, would have been able to afford such extravagances. The Navigation Inn stood next to Middlewich’s old Town Bridge. It was a ‘stack pub’, very much like the still extant Big Lock and Kings Lock - i.e. it was built on two levels, with the lower storey on the canal and the upper one opening onto Kinderton Street/Mill Lane.LikeThe Big Lock, The Navigation provided groceries and provisions to the people working the boats and it is an indication of the isolated lives, away from normal society, that the boat people led that it was worthwhile providing a service here, so close to the town centre. Locals at both The Navigation and Big Lock were catered for on the upper, street level bars. The King’s Lock operated slightly differently, with facilities for both boatees and local people at canal level and stabling etc. for horses on the lower level. From 1890 until 1896 The Navigation was run by Charles and Hannah Dean, great grandparents of my old schoolmate Andrew Craig. An advertisement of the time informs us that the pub was ‘greatly enlarged’ circa 1895.The pub was demolished around 1930 to make way for the rebuilding of Town Bridge.Thank you for reading Middlewich Memories throughout 2023.I’d like to join Ida and George in wishing everyone in Middlewich a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories

54Let’s talk legal...THE dangers of getting divorced before you reach a financial settlement. If you decide to separate from your husband or wife, it isn’t uncommon to want to start divorce proceedings quickly so you can move on to the next chapter of your life, and so that you can achieve a final and binding financial settlement. However, if you talk to a divorce solicitor at Evolve Family Law, we will normally recommend that you don’t finalise your divorce until you have reached a financial settlement and you have secured a financial court order. This advice (and your decision not to finish the divorce until there is a financial order) is best taken before any divorce proceedings are even started, because it may affect who starts the divorce proceedings, and how they are started. This advice doesn’t mean that you can’t apply for a divorce. Instead, you should delay applying for the final order of divorce.Dangers of a divorce without a financial settlement and financial court order. Although you may think that the dangers of getting divorced without first reaching a financial settlement or securing a financial court order are remote, they could create significant difficulties for you.One risk is that your ex-spouse may pass away before you obtain a financial court order. This could be a major problem for you if most of the family assets are owned in their sole name, or if they have significant pensions, or if they are financially supporting you. The risks are:1. If your ex-spouse left provision for you in a Will made during your marriage their gift is invalid because of the final order of divorce2. If your ex-spouse died without making a Will (called intestacy) you will not inherit their estate under intestacy rules because you are no longer classed as their next of kin3. Whilst you may be able to bring a claim for financial provision against your ex-spouse’s estate the application could be opposed by the beneficiaries in the Will or the next of kin under the intestacy rules. Your claim would also be lower because you are no longer classed as a widow or widower4. If your ex-spouse had a pension you will not be entitled to the widow or widower’s pensionObtaining a financial court order. A financial court order can be obtained by agreement once you have secured your conditional order of divorce. Evolve can help you negotiate a financial settlement and apply for the financial order. If there is an agreed financial settlement there is normally no need to attend a court hearing to get the order. If an agreement cannot be reached a financial application can be made. A family judge decides on what, in their view, is a fair financial settlement. Obtaining the financial court order before your divorce is finalised protects your interests.Evolve Family Law
