Grand m a s kitch en W ith the nights drawing in it is time for something with a little spice to warm you up my spiced apple pear flan is delicious served with fresh cream or warm custard Method Preheat the oven to 180 C 160 C fan gas mark 4 Grease and line a 7inch loose bottomed round tin Put all the ingredients for the base in a mixing bowl and using an electric beater or a fork mix together Put the mix into the greased tin and level it out Arrange the apples and pears in 2 layers over the top of the base sprinkling half of the sugar half of the mixed spice and half of the dried fruit over each layer Bake for 1 hour in the middle of the oven or until the top is browned and the fruit is soft Remove from the oven and sprinkle the top with Demerara sugar while it is still hot Leave in the tin to cool slightly before putting on a plate Best served warm with cream or custard 10 Spiced Apple Pear Flan For the base 6oz 175g self raising flour er softened 4oz 100g butt 1 large egg 1 1 2Oz 40g lig ht brown soft sugar Pinch of salt For the toppin g 2 apples peel ed cored and sliced 2 pears peel ed cored an d sliced you can use any variety of fruit of your choice 1 1 2oz 40g gr anulated suga r 1tsp mixed sp ice 2oz 50g dried fruit I used fruits but you mixed vine can use sulta nas Demerara su gar to sprink le over baked flan

Tr y s o m e th ing new T his month I m going to convince you all to try meditation It s the perfect way to relax and unwind The practice of meditation has been around for 5 000 years and with 200 500 million people meditating around the world they surely must be onto something right If you look back through history anybody wanting to practice meditation would have to travel to the Far East or South Asia and seek out a teacher in the hope they would pass on their teachings That s quite a distance and cost Luckily the world and technology has progressed a lot Let s take a look at that progress with a meditation history timeline 1500 BCE Earliest documented records of meditation 600 500 BCE Meditation developed in Taoist China and Buddhist India 653 CE The first meditation hall opened in Japan and Japanese Buddhism began to evolve 15th 17th Century European exploration of the world takes place 18th Century Western scholars began to discover translations of the ancient teaching of meditation 19th Century Awareness of meditation grew in the Western world aided by the improvement of transport and communication across the countries 1920 s The novel Siddhartha and The Tibetan Book of the Dead was published attracting Westerners to the idea of Buddhism and Meditation 1950 s The Post War years saw The Vipassana movement in Burma also known as the Insight Meditation movement calming and clearing the mind for insight 1960 s The Beatles famously travelled to India in 68 to take part in Transcendental Meditation training Hatha Yoga and Transcendental Meditation gained popularity in America and Europe 1970 s The Beach Boys penned lyrics to their music and released songs about their 14 experiences of Transcendental Meditation 1980 s The Insight Meditation Movement took off in America 1990 s Deepak Chopra founded the Chopra Centre for wellbeing with David Simon In 2003 Deepak Chopra published The Spontaneous Fulfilment of Desire The book claims Through specific principles and exercises meditation at a time when world events may leave us feeling especially insignificant and vulnerable Deepak Chopra restores our awareness of the awesome powers within us With the rise and popularity of the internet mediation was becoming more and more accessible The creation of You Tube in 2005 helped to catapult meditation into the mainstream Five years later Headspace released the first meditation App for phones It has since been downloaded 11 million times and there are now 2 500 alternative meditation Apps available So you really can mediate anywhere your car garden bedroom at the kitchen table or even whilst walking And you can meditate for as long or as short as you want I enjoy my morning five minute deep breathing and guided meditation I make sure I m the first one up grab my phone select the meditation I want and close my eyes After five minutes I have a clear head and I m ready to start the day Meditation has proven health benefits too if you are feeling a little overwhelmed lost and anxious stressed or just need some time to yourself try mediation It s a practice that has been around for thousands of years well and truly tried and tested Even The Beatles tried it When we have physical symptoms of illness we take a tablet or medicine You have the medicine available to you right now whilst you are sitting in your chair reading this Why not give it a try relax refocus and enjoy the benefits it brings Jody Woodbridge

Mi d d l ewi ch Heritage Tr ust M urgatroyd s restoration year This year has really had its ups and downs Like most people we are caught up in the Covid 19 situation it s really affected our restoration of Murgatroyd s Brine Pumps and in some cases budget We ve gone from event planning for our official opening in April 2020 to virtual projects that reflect our progress and present a new website with archive images Middlewich Heritage Trust have released a new video produced scripted and voiced over by trust member Steve Broadfoot showing the construction and later history of the Murgatroyd s Salt and Chemical Works at Elworth south of Middlewich www middlewich heritage org uk murgatroyds salt and chemical works This presentation uses archive material donated to Middlewich Heritage and digitised as part of the Murgatroyd Brine Pump Project It replaced the Heritage Open Days in view of the delayed work however the site was not going to be ready to receive visitors anyway 20 Our hard working volunteers have been back on site working within the restrictions to complete works on vital elements of the project While contractors continue to fit us in the backlog of work We are now finally in the last stages of restoration and should be finished around the end of October Keep an eye on our website for progress www middlewich heritage org uk Even though it s been a tough year we can finally see the brine pump project taking shape from the jungle of plants and a makeshift door we now have a building standing proud re roofed new gantry repointed and restored The difference is something everyone involved should be proud of and I m especially looking forward to welcoming visitors on site from April 2021 Middlewich Heritage Trust www middlewich heritage org uk

Fitne ss S trength Training For Runners Part 1 Many runners avoid strength training based on myths like it ll make you slower it ll make you bulky or you ll overtrain if you use weights Let me put this straight and tell you that strength training is the most important thing you re not doing to improve your running performance and longevity Because of how strength increases occur you don t necessarily have to get bigger to get stronger Your muscles get stronger through two primary mechanisms more muscle and more recruitment of muscle fibre More muscle happens by increasing muscle fiber size The larger your muscle fibre the more force you ll be able to generate Normally this takes weeks to months to happen and there are two types sarcoplasmic and myofibrillar hypertrophy You will increase muscle with strength training but it won t be much unless your program is purely focused on hypertrophy muscle growth and you re in a caloric surplus consuming above maintenance calories The other way strength improves is through the nervous system this is the mechanism you re looking to really drive your strength adaptations as a runner Improving the nervous system through strength training can increase the number 42 of muscle fibres that are contracting during a movement increasing force production with the muscle you already have This is valuable since there is no increase in body weight with neurological adaptations Another benefit of training your nervous system is the improvement in motor control Motor control increases strength by enhancing the ability to contract the appropriate muscles at the right time this creates the most efficient and stable movement possible for a joint For example improving motor control of the hip musculature through proper squats and banded hip thrusts will allow you to use those muscles properly when running This leads to increased hip stability which carries down to the knee and ankle joints allowing you to push off the ground with greater force Neurological increases don t need much time to happen and can occur independently of increasing muscle mass With the right program you can strengthen muscles for running taking the strain off the joints and improving your running pattern Don t be afraid of gaining muscle or getting bulky because no one gains pounds of muscle overnight increasing strength can be fairly straight forward building muscle is hard To add muscle you would have to eat in a caloric surplus and train for specifically for hypertrophy with a much higher training volume But even if you gain a pound or two of muscle it will still improve your running If you re a runner don t fear strength training Phil Rigden ZERO44 PERFORMANCE

Mi d d l ewi ch s h eritage T o all and any newcomers to Middlewich welcome You re part of a richly historic town one of Cheshire s very oldest And still it continues to attract residents from elsewhere Heritage hunters are lucky here because even for long time locals there are sweeping backstories to discover One curious and consistent thing is how some locations manage to become quite central It occurs everywhere So does this town have such sites Of course Certain features repeatedly act as a kind of hub Middlewich s first such centre of activity was a pretty important one only a Roman army camp We are talking Harbutt s Field off present day King Street As long ago as the 1st century AD this salty spot arrived On The Map due to valuable brine resources coupled with the presence of Roman command It therefore got fixed into a broader network Not just military but trade and communication routes linking forts and settlements were like spokes of a wheel Interestingly this node and passage often occurs in nature too Why Harbutt s Field though The name itself has an intriguing history The field bit is easy as it is very obviously wide flat ground useful for all those soldiers and horses Previously it was called Harbour or sometimes Harboro Field Still slightly mysterious That s because it s a corruption 46 of earlier words In both Old and Middle English here referred to army and beorg meant hospitality or protection hence a herebeorg was an army shelter That fits After the relatively brief Roman phase came an influx of Anglo Saxons before the famed Conquest of the late 11th century However when Normans arrived to settle here they didn t choose the overgrown Roman site Instead they established a new town or node of their own across the river Newton That said the town expanded ever outward from there Former tracks were still used In fact greatly modified they still are Middlewich has some very old road systems Bring on the 18th century s Age of Canals The Trent Mersey s northern gateway is the Big Lock so called because of its greater width at this point leaving Middlewich right by Harbutt s Field A boaters public house with cobbled ramp leading to stabling for tired horses and adjoining commercial premises proved popular Check out the leafy decorated fa ade above the old shopfront This again became a busy hub within that local area Today s revamped watering hole is still gathering people all under the imaginary gaze of that ancient Roman army base Well if that s not a recurring centre point what is Julie Elizabeth Smalley
