Ti m e to ma ke an im pact H ave you ever wondered what life was like 100 years ago Or how funds and services are distributed in your area These may seem like two contrasting questions but I assure you they are directly linked Next year we will all have the opportunity to stamp our mark in history by completing a survey that has been taking place every ten years since 1801 The Census of England Wales Like any large scale production or task it requires planning and rehearsals In fact the Office of National Statistics completed a census rehearsal in 2019 to test all the systems and processes The rehearsal must have gone well as the Government are now recruiting 30 000 field staff across England Wales to help the census run smoothly and ensure the maximum number of people complete the questionnaire If that wasn t enough support to make the census a success they also have the law behind them As of 1920 it became compulsory to complete the census If you don t complete it or provide false information it could result in a fine of up to 1 000 and a criminal record If you still don t feel obliged to complete 8 the census you need to know that the information is anonymised and is used to help plan fund and run local services such as schools and health services Ever wondered how so many or so few supermarkets can be in one town Well the census data is used for this a supermarket chain can use the data to decide where to open another store If you re still not keen would it make a difference to know that the data can help support voluntary organisations such as the Mental Health Foundation to get information on the communities they are working within They use the data to plan services and support funding applications By completing the census you are helping in the education sector too Students and academics may use the data to support their coursework or research And finally if you are researching your family history the census is a great place to start But remember public access to the census is restricted under the terms of the 100 year old rule To make it even easier to complete 2021 will be a digital first census For the first time you can complete the questionnaire online

S m o ke Ala rm s C heshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging the public to have a think about the smoke alarms in their home Statistics show that one smoke alarm may not be enough to provide you with the best chance of escaping a fire in the home Most people know that working smoke alarms save lives They provide the vital early warning that allows for a safe escape a tragedy avoided However despite the majority of homes 91 per cent having at least one working smoke alarm smoke alarms only alerted householders to just one in every three fires in the home in England The most common reason a smoke alarm failed to activate was because the fire was outside its range Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service s Head of Prevention Nick Evans said We 14 all must make sure that we have enough smoke alarms in our homes and that they are in the right places If your whole home isn t covered you could be leaving it to chance and in a fire you might not get the early warning that you need The vast majority of us now have at least one working smoke alarm in our home but early detection and warning is vital to reduce the devastation a fire can cause That s why it s so important that you have enough smoke alarms and that they are in the right places That will give them the best chance of alerting you and your loved ones to a fire You should also make sure you have at least one working smoke alarm on every level of your home preferably in hallways and landings And placing smoke alarms near to sleeping areas and in rooms where there are electrical appliances could give you the extra warning you need The Service s five smoke alarm top tips A single smoke alarm is not enough install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home The ideal position is on the ceiling in the middle of a room or on a hallway or landing Consider fitting additional alarms in other rooms where there are electrical appliances and near sleeping areas Don t put alarms in or near kitchens and bathrooms where smoke or steam can set them off by accident Replace your smoke alarms every ten years Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service is also urging carers and people who keep a close eye on less able relatives to check that these homes have enough smoke alarms in the right places too Nick Evans added Don t forget to test your smoke alarms regularly They can only do their job if they re in good working order Cheshire Fire Rescue Service

Inb ox f u ll D id you know that in 2019 the global emails users topped 3 9 billion that is almost half the world population and in 2023 it is expected to grow to 4 3 billion With all these users then you can imagine this generates a lot of emails and you would be right in 2019 293 6 billion emails were sent each day some days when I look at my emails it feels like I have received most of them Email addresses have become as important to us as our home address or mobile phone number if not more important as we use them as our identity in the digital world we freely give out this vital piece of information and as such the thought of having to change them is as daunting as moving home or changing bank accounts The questions I get asked are should I change it How will someone get hold of me And how long will it take to update all my logins Let s look at the first one should you change your email let s go back to the huge stat at the start of the article 293 6 billion emails being sent each day how many of these do you feel land in your inbox If you are getting a lot of unwanted emails then you could spend some time unsubscribing from them Marketing emails from companies do have to give you an option to update your communication preferences and opt out of them if they don t they are likely not sending you legitimate emails and are either spam or phishing emails these can be reported and then you should block them You can report spam emails to the ICO ico org uk phishing emails can be forwarded to the National Cyber Security Centre at report phishing gov uk If you are getting a lot of spam or phishing emails then it is likely your email address is being passed around the internet this isn t personal it comes down to probability the more addresses they can target the more likely it is for scammers to succeed The reason why your email is 22 out there is because we all readily enter our email addresses into websites if the company is hacked the first data that they get is emails addresses these lists are sold around the internet To help stop all of these issues a change of email may be an option you don t have to delete the old address you simply start afresh For your old email I suggest you don t use an email program like outlook or mail to read them use the website version this will save you inbox being cluttered but means you can access them when you need to Now you have thought about a change comes the next question how will people get in touch with me this is a simple one you tell them you could send an email from your old account to family and friends to let them you know your new email or next time you talk to them let them know That s the personal contacts dealt with what about your logins to online companies and services for this I would suggest a list write down a list of all of the main services you login to social media streaming services and companies you buy from at the start you may only have a small list but these are the ones that you will be using most often then as you go along you will go to websites that you use infrequently and that will be your prompt to check your account and update the details while there you may have the option to update your communication preferences do you really need that daily email about an AA battery deal possibly not Just remember you have now started afresh with your emails don t let this inbox end up like the last think before you give out your email South Cheshire Digital

L o c kd own s tories Alli e Potti nger L ocal artist Allie Pottinger runs Watercolour Workshops from her Swettenham studio and at Gather beside the Town Hall in Congleton Lockdown has changed all of this Her first online class happened by accident Early on in lockdown a regular client contacted me to see if could give a virtual demonstration to her Wilmslow WI group I had only just heard about Zoom but quickly agreed and set about coming to terms with the online platform to see how I could make it work from my kitchen table I bought a clamp to let me position the camera at the best angle I changed the lights and started to test the set up on the rest of the family sitting in different rooms in the house I had to be able to let the group see the artwork but also to see my palette and to hear me clearly The event went well but from what I had thought 24 would be the local Wilmslow group turned out to be the whole Cheshire Federation of the WI There were 78 people in the virtual room all painting along with me It gave me the confidence to know that during lockdown I could still reach my clients and to offer them support for their art even though we could not be together I realised how important it was to stay in touch with my clients Watercolours have a wonderful effect on your mood you quite easily pass the time and get lost in the moment The act of starting and creating a painting can help with giving both escapism and purpose This has helped some of my clients with managing the mental challenges of isolation I have been very conscious communicating with my clients

Katy vi r tua lly meets I t s now been nearly six months since the government announced the lockdown and as our community started to open up physically so did new opportunities Self isolation had its downsides some of us were struggling to sleep due to vivid coronavirus dreams others were feeling as if they have no time to do anything despite doing nothing and some were struggling due to vulnerability loneliness or employment prospects Despite its gloomy appearance lockdown has brought a positive change too as people have more time to do what they love change their habits and explore new careers I meet virtually with local ladies Lanka and Vickie to find out their story Vickie was working in a busy doctor s surgery she experienced first hand the impact lockdown had on the mental health of the vulnerable people in the community In the early days her surgery made calls to elderly patients to check on their wellbeing and to make sure they had the basics and had that all important human contact with a neighbour or family member Lanka s situation was slightly different she worked in security and made cakes unfortunately Covid 19 nearly stopped her income overnight if it wasn t for a few cleaning jobs These became Lanka s lifeline in so many ways and she was able to keep this role up using all the correct procedures As lockdown became the new normal Lanka s clients would ask her for a little more support perhaps walking their dog doing some shopping or just a simple chat 32 The friend s talked about how their passion for caring for people could be turned into a business Understandably in an ideal world I am sure they would like to do this for free but they have to be realistic and you could argue that people shouldn t have to pay for services like this however we are all aware of the situation of local government funding and not everyone has family they can turn too One client would call Lanka her Angel so they decided to call themselves Home Helping Angels More than a quarter of people have considered a change to their careers relationship or home life during the pandemic according to the Office of National Statistics Lanka and Vickie have plans to grow their business into a team which they will call Angels They both admit this business idea would not have come about if it wasn t for Covid 19 and they look forward to helping as many people as they can in their new careers Katy

Grand m a s kitch en W ith the sun shinning and flowers in full bloom our precious bees have been busy making honey and I love to use local honey to make a delicious treat honey cake I enjoy a slice with a cup of tea Please look for a local honey producer it supports bee keepers and tastes better Method Preheat the oven to 180 C fan 160 C gas mark 4 Grease and line a 7inch cake tin Beat together the softened butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy Add the eggs sifted flour and baking powder and beat together with an electric mixer Add the honey and a few drops of almond essence continue to mix for a couple of minutes Put the mix into the prepared tin and bake for 30 minutes Without removing the cake from the oven cover it with a double layer of grease proof paper to prevent it from browning too quickly and then continue baking for a further 30 to 45 minutes Test the cake is cooked by inserting a skewer into it If it comes out clean the cake is cooked Remove from the oven and leave in the tin Mix the topping honey and lemon juice and pour evenly over the top of the cake Leave to cool before turning the cake out of the tin Beat together the cream cheese icing sugar and a small amount of lemon juice add more lemon juice as needed The icing needs to be stiff enough to 36 Honey Cake 175g softened butter 175g golden ca ster sugar 3 free range eg gs beaten 175g whole meal self ra ising flour sifted 1 tsp baking po wder 1 tbsp local cl ear honey Almond essenc e For the toppin g 1 tbsp clear ho ney Juice of a lem on Icing 150g cream ch eese Lemon juice 175g sifted ic ing sugar form soft peaks Too much juice will make the icing runny Spread on top of the cake and decorate with some lemon rind

Mi d d l ewi ch s h eritage W hich wharf is which Our Flight of Three Locks separates two distinct quaysides Yet five different names have been in use over 250 years A Middlewich muddle in the making Let s clarify Near Canal Terrace is Middlewich Wharf original centre of that all important canal administration The typical office had an agent and team including accountant and chief toll collector A wharfinger oversaw loading and unloading of goods During one month alone in 1832 November 208 boats are recorded as being loaded up here The engineer and his family resided in their own company provided home Elegant Canal House was a substantial Georgian cottage surrounded by large open courtyard decorative outbuilding various storehouses and stabling for horses Based here for the North Staffordshire Company s Canal in 1850 was Thomas Pointon listed also as wharfinger at Canal Wharf an alternative if somewhat general name Double duty By 1874 Thomas Ball was agent to the now called Trent Mersey Canal Still Canal House was very much on the town s rural edge bordering farmland In 1914 it was home to William Jones Middlewich s Canal Inspector Engineer And the other one Town Wharf likely gained its apt name still current because it was right in the heart near the principal street Since 1850 commodious new 42 warehouses allowed for the reception and transmission of merchandise Besides the three storey goods building was a two storey cottage in whitewashed brick and until 2005 a Toll Office It got ever busier Clustered around were all kinds of merchants and trades Wharfinger here in 1850 was William Henshall As it lay under the main A54 Kinderton or Town Bridge it acquired the extra address Bridge Wharf even though there is a bridge 169 carrying Brooks Lane at the other wharf too Matters were never straightforward In 1914 the blanket term Canal Wharf had the helpful Leadsmithy St added Interchangeable Apparently Even locals must have needed this clarity Agent then for the North Staffordshire Railway Canal Company and the Shropshire Union Canal Company was William Smith also collector at the T M Canal Office By the Second World War Middlewich s waterways were declining Canal House was still occupied in 1939 by Canal Inspector private resident John Ollerhead Leisure boat hire was to come later Another Yes Between Sutton Lane and St Anne s Road maps of 1938 show a St Anne s Wharf Middlewich Top Wharf does not seem to have rated an official mention historically On reflection would a simple Upper and Lower both then and now have been much easier Julie Elizabeth Smalley
