6AT the start of the first ever Folk & Boat Festival in June 1990 the mood was one of apprehension, hope, expectation and sheer pride that our town, of all towns, was planning such a move into the festival world. We were, of course, told by the experts who haunt every pub in Middlewich that we were wasting our time and that ‘it will never work’But this negativity only made us all determined to make the event a success whatever happened. And if you don’t know you can’t do something, you do it anywayDave Thompson recruited me as compère for the event, presumably because he couldn’t think of anyone else who didn’t mind spouting nonsense into a mike for hours on end.I agreed, on the strict understanding that I would not, under any circumstances, be a member of a committee. That worked out well; after my first committee meeting I went home puzzling over the fact that I had, somehow, become publicity officer as well as compère.The man responsible was John McAteer, who did more for Middlewich in the relatively short time he was with us, than so many people realise. The Folk & Boat Festival was just the start of his work in the town and he was determined that it was going to happen.‘It’s definitely going to happen’ he said, and that was that. You never argued with John, you just got on with it. ‘Just Do It’ was his favourite expression. And we did.Looking at the line-up for the first event is interesting, if not astonishing: It consisted of Bernard Wrigley (The Bolton Bullfrog), The Middlewich Paddies, The Token Women, The Boat Band - and me.The Paddies started the Festival on the Friday night, there was a talent contest on Saturday afternoon, a concert with Bernard (and me) on the Saturday night and a singaround on the Sunday. And that was it, the whole schedule. There was a pleasing, amateurish, make-it-up-as-you-go-along feel to the Festival in those days. It was inspired by the annual Middlewich Carnival, by various other Festivals we’d visited, and by the sheer enthusiasm of all those involved.I know that the pioneering spirit of 1990 can’t ever be recaptured but I wish the organisers of the much slicker, professional and commercial Folk & Boat Festival of today the very best. Here’s to the next thirty years!Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories

10THE Go Local is a family business, my husband and I work together every day; it’s not always easy but I wouldn’t change it for the world, and I am always happy to meet other couples who are in the same situation. So, it was great to spend some time with Gavin and Leigh Cotton, who recently took over ROK Plumbing Supplies, a Plumbers Merchant and Bathroom Showroom in Middlewich - another married couple who spend 99.99% of their time together. Gavin was someone I knew long before he took over ROK Plumbing as he owned a bathroom fitting company called Wych Developments and would always post enviable bathrooms he had completed on his social media. I would take inspiration from his installs and imagine how my own bathroom could look, with the latest colours, styles and designs. Gavin says he was always learning and developing his knowledge and skills, but unfortunately his body couldn’t handle the physical work and after nearly 20 years in the trade his back began to suffer. Now, I am a big believer that everything happens for a reason, and Gavin used to go into ROK Plumbing based on Midbrook Way, off Telford Way, nearly every day for parts and a chat with the then owner Geoff. During one of their conversations, Geoff happened to mention he was ready to retire, and Gavin had a light bulb moment – he decided to take over the shop. ROK Plumbing Supplies and Bathroom Showroom has been open for five years selling everything a plumber or someone handy at DIY would need. They are open to the trade and the public and because of Gavin’s years of experience and knowledge he can help and guide people to make sure they are getting the best part for the job in hand. The Cottons have big plans for the bathroom showroom; it’s very nearly complete and it will be updated regularly as trends and styles change. So far, they have some lovely displays in place, and Leigh has added her own touches so you could imagine how they would look in your own home. Customers can bring their dream bathroom to life as Gavin can measure up the client’s space and Leigh has a wonderful eye and can work with them on designs, as they have a catalogue of bathrooms for every taste and requirement. They can then work with the client’s plumber or introduce them to a fitter to get the very best out of their budget and space. Leigh and Gavin have been married for 10 years this year and have three children together. Leigh is Middlewich born and bred and Gavin is originally from Winsford. As with so many of the businesses I get the honour of speaking to for the magazine, the importance to them of living in, working in and supporting the town is so clear to me. They are a lovely hard-working couple with the motivation to grow their business and do it by being as helpful and knowledgeable as possible, and I am sure their future is bright.KatyGo Local meets...

14WATERWAYS stalls, stands, traders… Middlewich Folk & Boat Festival is back! Yet the scene could also apply to Town Wharf in its 19th century heyday. Who helped that happen? James Brindley. Inspired and ambitious? Definitely. This 18th century engineer envisioned a national ‘Grand Cross’ - the natural rivers Trent, Mersey, Severn and Thames joined by artificial canals. Part came right here through Middlewich. Here’s a whistle-stop historical tour…The pioneering Trent & Mersey Canal was initially called the Grand Trunk. Now meeting it at near right-angles the Shropshire Union (Middlewich Branch), built slightly after, was first the Chester & Ellesmere. Then it acquired the Wardle linking section. Complicated? Yes! Name changes were made by canal companies and subsequent mergers, or later when combining with the new railways.Middlewich did well. By 1850 townspeople were informed of ‘commodious warehouses’ recently ‘erected for the transmission and reception of merchandise’. This town merited its own Canal Office with agents to manage the transhipping wharf ‘near the principal street’. Haulage cranes commanded the towpath, moving goods under the supervision of Thomas Pointon, first wharfinger to occupy the on-site cottage. Businesses soon clustered around. Bricks, tiles, lime, or coal? Town Wharf could supply it all. Pubs were squeezed in, including The Navigation whose premises were positioned right by the old, very narrow canal bridge.By 1874 there was boat-building too. An innovation at this time was James Cockshott’s fly boat express service from Middlewich ‘to and from Derby daily’. And it wasn’t all heavy duty shopping. During the Great War, ladies could visit a dressmaker at Canal Wharf, albeit near a less glamorous-sounding ‘sack and bag dealer’.Yet surprisingly Middlewich might have gained a third cross-country waterway. The Trent & Mersey was thriving – so its promoters had competitors. Middlewich’s key location meant much speculative surveying of land for further possible routes. In 1837 the company received a letter stating intentions to connect Middlewich by water with… Altrincham. Accessing the Bridgwater Canal there, it was claimed, would shorten the distance to Manchester by eighteen to twenty miles. The ‘ruse’? This scheme for an additional canal linked only with the Shropshire Union, avoiding the Trent & Mersey altogether! However, not entering the T&M at all required erecting a large aqueduct. It didn’t happen. What a different Middlewich townscape had that petition been successful! Back on Town Wharf nowadays the wharfinger’s cottage and main warehouse remain, but derelict. In 2005 the toll office completing this important little triangle was demolished. The FAB Festival returns – alongside our fabulously historical waterways.Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritage...

18NO matter how long you have been a part of the Middlewich community, there is a very good chance you have some form of connection to the community centre, whether it is attending a mums and tots group, the youth group, Sunday school, Brownies, a birthday party, or even a wedding reception (our very own David Roberts had his there). The hall on Queen Street has been an integral part of our town since 1975.One man who has been involved from the start is Reg Jackson. He has decided the time has now come to retire from his formal role as Secretary, and it would be fair to say that the centre wouldn’t be what it is today without him.In the early 1970s, Reg was a member of the Parochial Church Council. Reverend Cox had just joined the church, and in Reg’s words, he was a little annoyed there was no church hall, especially given the size of the church itself. Reverend Cox worked hard to get some grants, and with the help of some friends managed to get the money together from local and national government to build the community centre.Reg did have his own small agenda for opening a hall for the church he was a part of: he was a big table tennis player and he always had to play at another church hall. He always felt a little naughty having to use another hall, instead of being able to support his own. He had even been spotted by a previous vicar, who had asked why he was there! So, when Reverend Cox formed a town committee to build the community centre, Reg stepped up to help support it.The centre was built in the garden of the then Vicarage, and like most builds, the original quote and what they based the grants on was not quite enough. Luckily, two local groundsmen dug all the drains for free, and they did a lot of fundraising themselves, including newspaper collections for recycling. This meant the final bill was around £18,500 – however that didn’t include all the volunteering work that went into this build. More realistically, the cost was closer to £30,000 – about £260,000 in today’s money. The centre was opened by the Major of Congleton Borough Council in 1975 and everyone was very happy that the hall was booked nearly every day for local clubs and community groups as soon as it opened, and this has very much been the case for nearly 50 years. All that time, Reg Jackson gave his time to the centre as Secretary. He has volunteered for the benefit of the Middlewich community, and now it is his time to retire. The centre will always be an important part of Reg’s life (and his wife Pam’s). He knows every little nook and cranny and probably has an interesting fact or tale about every brick and piece of flooring, and he will now be remembered as the club continues into the next 50 years with his own plaque near the front door, which rightly says ‘Without your dedication, this centre would not exist’.I hope Reg enjoys his retirement; he is such a lovely man. All this time he has given something special to the community of Middlewich and you might not have even realised this when using the centre for one reason or another.Good luck for the future Reg, and thank you from The Go Local xKatyThank You Reg...

25THE 2022 celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70-year reign with the Platinum Jubilee is one of the UK’s major historic events. But although 70 years on the throne is certainly an impressive accomplishment, it has to be said that 96 years of life are perhaps even more so. Her Majesty is the world’s oldest monarch, following the death of His Majesty King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia at the age of 90. So, what have those 96 years been like? The war and the armyQUEEN Elizabeth II was born and named Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary, on April 21st 1926. That means that she was 13 years old when WWII started, 14 when her home in Buckingham Palace was bombed in 1940, and by the time the war ended, she had already become a Junior Commander at the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) and was training to become a mechanic. As a member of the ATS, she was also the first female of the Royal family to be an active-duty member of the British Armed Forces. And on May 8th, 1945, dressed in that ATS uniform, she snuck out of the palace with her sister Margaret to join the people celebrating the end of the war in the streets of London. In 1985, speaking to the BBC about that night, she said, “I think it was one of the most memorable nights of my life.” Today, Queen Elizabeth is the last surviving head of state to have served during the Second World War.FamilyTWO years after the end of WWII, and six years before she would become queen, Princess Elizabeth was betrothed and married to her distant cousin – Lieutenant Phillip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy. They were married in 1947. He was formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark and, just before they were to be married, was titled Duke of Edinburgh, earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich by Princess Elizabeth’s father. In 1952 she became queen with the passing of her father, then in 1953 was crowned Queen Elizabeth II. At this point, she had already given birth to two of her four children – Prince Charles and Princess Anne. Ten years later in 1960 Prince Andrew would be born, and Prince Edward in 1964. Now, in 2022, those four children have given the Queen eight grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren.The world around herQUEEN Elizabeth II has lived through many changes in the world around her. Many argue that this century actually saw the most change for human civilisation. Especially in terms of technology. She saw the world go from radio and black and white televisions to smartphones and royal social media pages. But, all in all, she has been said to be quite a progressive and embracing monarch as the world changed around her. She was early to email, sending off her first one in 1976, and in 2012 recorded her Christmas message in 3D. The best way to analyse her approach to change is her own words. “Change is a constant,” said the monarch as she addressed Parliament during her Golden Jubilee in 2002, “managing it has become an expanding discipline. The way we embrace it defines our future.”Find out how Middlewich are celebrating on the next page...Looking back at 96 years of life

All women are welcome to come along. Or check out their Facebook page, search Middle-Wyches WI Middlewich Crazy DaisiesKATIE and I started up the group Crazy Daisies in October 2021 as we wanted to plant wildfl owers to help pollinators and the wildlife. We both have a passion for these kinds of things; our gardens already have wildfl owers, ponds and bug houses. However, we wanted to get some wildfl owers around our town to make it look nice and also get the community to come together to make a change. We were hoping that 1 or 2 people would join to help too, to our surprise, a week after starting the group we were totally overwhelmed to see we had over 100 members. Next, we needed to fi nd areas to plant offi cially, we always carry spice tubs full of native British wildfl owers in our bags and pockets in case we see a bit of bare unloved soil we can scatter on, so we contacted Ruth and Steve from ANSA. They met up with us and said they would prepare an area on the fountain fi elds park for us to plant. This was perfect as we could get the children involved too. So we advertised our fi rst seeds scattering day, the 20th of March, which was also the ‘National Day of Happiness’. We wanted the community and especially the children to join in scattering seeds and have a happy day. We create beds of different colours and varieties of fl owers. We had a bed called happiness, one in red, white and blue for the Queen’s Jubilee, one in blue and yellow supporting Ukraine and then the last bed we let the children choose, the winning name was raining fl owers. On the day we had a bug hunt for the children as we wanted them to see how many bugs they could fi nd then, and we plan to follow up with another once the fl owers are in full bloom, so that they can see the difference their hard work has made.It was great to see the community come together for this day, when we arrived at the park there were already loads of families waiting to help. The wonderful Devlin, Nantwich Town Crier, opened our fun day and at the height of the day there were more than 500 members of the community, young and old, we never in our wildest dreams thought that would happen. Our local Councillor Garnet Marshal summed it up when he said ‘the heart of the town was in the park today’.Since the success of this event we followed it up with another at St Michael’s Church and currently, we are running the Crazy Daisies Sunfl ower Challenge, to support our pollinators along with supporting Ukraine. All details of these events and how to join can be found our Facebook page, facebook.com/MiddlewichCrazyDaisiesCommunity matters...(L-R) Beryl Swash, Mandy Copley, Donna Caffyn, Pam Farrell (Captain, B Team), Joy Leathwood, Paul Cochran (Landlord, White Bear), Bernice Walmsley (Scorer), Vicky Leathwood (Captain, A Team), Gill Gaskill, Susan Leicester.

38Recently on a trip to Scotland we decided to break up the journey and make an overnight stop in Lancaster, where we happened across a great hotel called Lancaster House.Part of the English Lakes group, Lancaster House is a short distance from Junction 33 off the M6 and is a 10-minute drive from Lancaster city centre, located next door to Lancaster University Management School.Having stayed in an English Lakes Hotel before, my expectations were high, and this hotel lived up to them. Lancaster House is a 4-star dog-friendly hotel and is surrounded by fields. Our room was more like a suite with a sliding door separating off a bedroom and seating area with balcony doors opening up to let in the fresh spring air.We had left our two furry family members (and our son) at home, so we had the enjoyment of our spacious room with two large TVs, a beautiful deep free-standing bath, and fluffy robes all to ourselves! Once we had settled in, we made the short drive into the city centre for a wander round.Lancaster has a fascinating, varied and ancient history, the city’s first recorded name, Lancastre, meaning ‘Roman fort on the River Lune’ is recorded in the Domesday book in 1086. Of national importance is Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building which sits in the centre of the city on a hilltop. It is a small city and, being compact, easily explored. There are a variety of museums – the City Museum in the Market Place (in the old Town Hall), the Judges’ Lodgings, Doll Museum and the Maritime Museum, to name but a few. We spent a few hours exploring and found a cosy pub for a drink before we headed back to the hotel for dinner. We ate our evening meal in hotel restaurant the Foodworks; the food was lovely with a great selection of wine on offer. Tired and very relaxed, after our meal we had a nightcap in the bar by the open fire and enjoyed the atmosphere of the other guests chatting away.In the morning, my husband went down to the hotel’s pool for a dip. The leisure club includes a heated pool, indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a sauna, steam room and a gym. After a perfect breakfast, we packed up to continue our journey. I promised myself this gem of a hotel wouldn’t be a stop-off point from now on, more of a destination. It has everything we need for a break away, and we would be back soon. Sometimes the best places are the ones you find by chance, and this is one of those. 42IF you have been to Wheelock Street recently, you may have noticed some changes to a building that has been empty for quite a while.Since Eric Alcock closed its doors nearly a decade ago, the large building opposite the post office has been gathering dust. Now local couple Lillie Pragnell and Doug Carter are breathing new life into it with some very exciting plans. It is clear from chatting to Lillie that this project is so much more than the four walls of the building. This is about the community she wants to grow and nurture.I meet Lillie in one side of the building which will be a showroom for partner Doug’s company Cheshire Doors and Bifolds. Her side of the property will be completed any day now. Lillie has a soft north of the border accent having been born in Edinburgh, and she proudly tells me Middlewich is her home. She has lived in the town for 10 years, and the moment she arrived, she felt settled. She and Doug are bringing up their four boys here and now they are investing their passion and businesses’ future in the heart of Wheelock Street. Lillie’s plans were originally slightly smaller as she wanted a local base for her estate planning business Carter & Co. However, after a chat with the landlord of 48-52 Wheelock Street, they changed things up and Wheelock Business Hub was born. The aim of the hub is to be a co-working space for small business owners to rent a desk or meeting room, to get individuals out of their home offices and link like-minded entrepreneurs, bringing them into the town centre and using the local facilities. The meeting room will be able to hold training sessions, networking events and workshops, and they can arrange equipment and lunches from local suppliers. The desk rental will be bookable on their website; it will be on a first come, first served basis and available by the day. The hub will have everything a small business needs: fast internet, tea and coffee and, most importantly, the opportunity to mix with other local businesses. One of Lillie’s priorities was to bring together a power team, and so far, it’s looking good, with her own estate planning business specialising in wills, trusts, lasting power of attorneys (LPAs), asset protection trust and funeral plans, and she has two other permanent residents renting offices: a mortgage broker and financial advisor: “I want the hub to be a financial one-stop shop – we just need an accountant and we have the perfect team!”As we sit and chat, I can hear the builders working next door, and we are surrounded by shiny new desks and chairs ready for their home in the Hub. It’s clear Lillie wants to see Middlewich thrive, and opening this project is going to bring back to life a building on Wheelock Street that has been closed for such a long time, but not only that; it will also bring people into the town. Whether they are clients visiting their services or local entrepreneurs renting desks, I see the positivity this will bring into Middlewich, and I wish her and Doug all the best.
