There have already been plenty of plaudits for Her Majesty’s stunning achievements, so I won’t try to compete. Suffice to say that I take my hat (or crown) off to an amazing lady who has shown such stamina and determination to keep true to her promise “ … that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong.” I only hope that I can still be as healthy and active in my later years! Also this month I’m looking forward to the weather improving and finally being able to spend more time outdoors with my family. May is Local and Community History Month, which is designed to increase awareness of local history. Since our local communities are so important to us as a business, I need no further prompting to get out and about and explore the history of our area. We are very lucky we have the talented David Roberts who writes about our social history and memories and Julie Smalley who digs deep into our rich past for the Go Local and all their articles can be read on our back catalogue on our website www.golocalmiddlewich.com.Although we only have the one Bank Holiday this month (the late May Bank Holiday having been rescheduled for early June to celebrate the Jubilee) there are still plenty of other major outdoor events happening in our region. To me it feels like we’re making up for all the missed opportunities of the last two years, and I for one intend to make the most of it.Whatever May has in store for you, I hope you get to relax and enjoy some quality time with friends and family.Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go LocalGo Local Middlewich is part of

6RUN Middlewich was set up in January 2015 as a free running club to bring the community together in a positive, safe and healthy environment. The idea to allow any wannabe runner to fall in love with running and enjoy the freedom and freeness of running in our beautiful town.We run our Couch to 5km (C25k) programme twice a year for anybody looking to get into running, with many of our regular runners starting off this way.Covid saw us running on our own, in 2s and then had us separated into groups of 6 which evolved into groups of similar paced runners and now each of our paced groups is run by an LIRF Run England certified coach who will be there to help and support you all the way.We understand that you may have questions, several of them may be... I don’t know where to start? I haven’t run for years? I don’t want to hold anyone up? My gammy knee, ankle, hip, ear, wonky toe nail wont be able to take it?After 7 years we’ve heard every excuse! So why not try running? With summer approaching its time to make a positive change, you’ll be welcomed into the running community and encouraged to reach your personal goals.Running in a club is also very social, you meet new friends along with finding something that’s simple to do but enjoyable. Each time you run you’ll get a little bit fitter and better. There’s no judgement from anybody and we can support you to challenge yourself! You will find that you’ll run with people who are there for all different reasons, whether its to cope with stress, build up distances, train for races or just to get up off the sofa. Best of all running isn’t an expensive sport, all you need is a pair of trainers and a willing heart. So if it sounds interesting and you want to join us we meet twice a week on a Tuesday’s at 7.15pm and Saturday’s at 9.00am. We meet at Middlewich Leisure Centre (behind the High School). Our runs are typically between 5km-10km but there’s always someone up to go a bit further… And we have groups to suit paces from 5 mins to 7.30min/km.You can find out more about the club and contact us on our facebook page (facebook.com/groups/runmiddlewich) and our website (runmiddlewich.club)Run MiddlewichRun, therapy for your soul...This May 15th sees the return of the Holdcroft Nissan Run Middlewich 5km race event and Family Fun Run. TREE surgery. Can’t anyone do that? How hard can it be if you’ve got a ladder and a chain saw? It was a question I put to Oliver Turnbull, the owner of OJT Tree Services, understandably I knew he would have strong views on the subject.I find people hacking at trees worrying for a number of reasons, notwithstanding the obvious dangers and risks involved with tree work, a cut is not just a cut. How a tree’s branches or limbs are pruned or trimmed has consequences for the whole tree. For myself, being a tree surgeon doesn’t just involve the proper felling or pruning of trees, it’s a whole field of knowledge involving tree care, planting, disease/decay management, root removal and stump grinding. When undertaking works we consider it important to recognise that trees and humans share similar physical characteristics.Arboriculture is a science, Arborists are called tree surgeons because their business bears a resemblance to how a doctor, or surgeon, work on people. They diagnose, treat and operate to heal or prolong life. Trees are living organisms. Both people and trees stand upright with a crown on top and limbs stemming from a central trunk. In addition, the tubular branching pattern of our lungs resembles the root system of many trees. Both are mostly water, sharing similar physical characteristics, but every person and every tree is unique. And just as surgery on humans involves recognising and diagnosing diseases and how to treat them, a qualified arboriculturist has to apply those same skills to their patients using their knowledge and experience - without the benefit of their patient being able to talk to them. There is evidence that trees communicate with each other, store memories and respond to attacks. Sadly, like us, they also suffer from stress and disease. So cutting into any part of a tree needs to be just as informed, considered and be precise. Incorrect surgery can be detrimental to the health of a tree and therefore compromise its regeneration and even its longevity because improperly pruned trees are unable to heal themselves.Professionally trained and qualified tree surgeons use methods and practices conforming to the natural physiological processes of the tree. A tree that has suffered at the hands of someone without this knowledge will manifest signs of stress which an experienced and expert tree surgeon will immediately recognise. So, the next time you look at the trees around your home, and think I have a chainsaw and a ladder, ask yourself first “do I have the knowledge?”, if you don’t, put the chain saw away and call a professional. 18I arrive early for my appointment with Phoebe, riding school and education manager of Higher Farm, equestrian centre and livery on Byley Lane, Byley. I am greeted by a young person who is expertly grooming a horse, and we get chatting. We talk about their past and they admit school was a struggle; they had been moved around because of behaviour and other personal issues. About 12 months ago, they had the opportunity to come for riding lessons and then Higher Farm took them on full time, giving them the opportunity to learn in a non-formal educational environment, not only the expected subjects of English and Maths she is also taking an equestrian qualification too. I must be really careful because I don’t want to identify the young person – that’s why I have been vague – however, I can honestly say this individual clearly has a glow about them. They tell me that in the past they would have never chatted to someone like this, but their confidence is growing and they feel respected and valued at Higher Farm.Phoebe arrives and before we make our way into the office, she helps the young person onto the horse so they can head off for a hack. It is clear there is a bond between them. Phoebe admits that when she was younger, she had a hard time at school and as a teenager, and it is those experiences that help her relate to the young people they support.I remember that only a few years ago Higher Farm was a dairy farm. It was sold and then it seemed to change overnight into what it is today. It wasn’t until we spoke to Phoebe about advertising in our magazines that we realised they do so much more than just lessons and livery. They are also a CIC (community interest company), which is a special type of business that exists to benefit the community rather than the owners. They do this by offering an alternative provision for young people who have become or are at risk of becoming disengaged from mainstream education or training. Participants aren’t required to have previous equine experience, just a passion to learn and a desire to re-engage. The main aim of the programme is to develop the young person in communication, confidence, teamwork, building relationships, perseverance and responsibility. As Phoebe and I talk, her passion and motivation is visible. At the moment they have two young people; however, they want to grow the scheme and when I ask what their limit will be, she smiles, holds her hands out enthusiastically and says, “As many young people as we can.” Her aim is to develop a residential setting in the near future; Byley is a beautiful location and Higher Farm is set on slightly raised ground, so from the back you can look out over the Cheshire countryside. They want to build small pods, taking advantage of the view, for the young people to use for their needs, whether that’s education, counselling or just some quiet time.We head out of the office so I can experience the view for myself, and I get to meet some of their horses out in the fields. I am not a ‘horsey person’, but even I can’t resist a stroke of the long nose of a friendly brown pony with a blond mane, and I can Go Local meets... Higher Farmcompletely understand how the horses help young people. There have of course been official studies done on the benefits of equine therapy, but just being there in the fresh air with them, you can feel their calming influence.I get a tour of the farm and see the riding school arena, which is booked for a special training session today; they have about 30 of their own ponies for children to learn to ride on. They also have stables for individuals to keep their own horses and do livery (it’s a bit like a 5-star hotel for horses). We make our way round the side of one of the main barns where their equine therapy unit is based. A horse is having his feet cleaned ready for a session in their water treadmill. This is a large unit with a treadmill base; the horse then stands within it and it fills with about a foot of water (although this varies depending on the horse’s needs). The horse then walks as the treadmill moves, which helps them build muscle, recover after injury and generally improve their fitness. They also have something called a combi floor, which is like those vibrating plates you see in some gyms; this helps with muscle recovery and the horse stands under warm lights while enjoying the benefits. If you want to have a quick look at the farm, there is a café which is open seven days a week called Cobby’s. The have an old bus set up for rainy days and a choice of healthy meals and drinks.I am blown away by Higher Farm (and Phoebe) and what they have achieved, and their future plans are inspirational. They have so much going on and the alternative provision they have already offered to two young people in such a short period of time has been life-changing. They don’t shout about it, though – it was me that asked them to do this article. They do it for the good of the young people and not for any business reasons – their stables and livery keep them busy enough!Katy

28WHAT happens to a piece of land when the supermarket occupying it closes down? Currently that’s quite a question. Better known though is what was there before. Whereas ground above Southway was once sandpits – Newton Bank’s story in particular is more dramatic. Its plotline involves a pair of local horticulturalists in the 18th century, one of the country’s finest stately homes - and a dashing duke. Now known for groceries rather than gardening, early 19th century Newton Bank was mostly open woodland west of the town. Here Moses and Robert Reid traded as “nursery and seedsmen”, in business since 1787. They grew roses, conifers, and various trees for sale. By 1850 Moses Reid also had premises in Pepper Street. Ten years later the firm was sold: to an enterprising 29-year-old gardener from Derbyshire - William Boosey. The buyer was from Chatsworth House - seat of the Dukes of Devonshire. There young Boosey worked under Sir Joseph Paxton, renowned garden designer and architect. They produced luxury varieties of fruit for the tables of country houses. When the 6th Duke died early in 1858 it prompted Paxton, then Head Gardener, to leave Chatsworth. Quite likely this combination of events caused William too to seek fortunes elsewhere. Though an Essex man, Cheshire’s wealthy gentry estates were a natural destination. So, the Booseys (William married one of the housemaids) came to Middlewich to take over Reids.By 1874 he was ‘nurseryman, seedsman and florist’. As well as Pepper Street, ‘Middlewich Nurseries and Seed Warehouse’ had offices at High St, Northwich. Proud advertisements read “These extensive Nurseries contain a large assortment of FRUIT, FOREST, and ORNAMENTAL TREES and SHRUBS (extending over thirty acres), and are easy of access to Middlewich Station.” To encourage customers “PRICE LISTS FORWARDED (POST FREE) ON APPLICATION”.The story doesn’t end there. In civic life William Boosey became Chairman of the Local Board and a County Magistrate. In 1896 a lease was granted from the curate at St Michael’s Church, Rev Charles Mayall, for a secluded old cottage and stables by the river Wheelock. “Brookfield” had two elegantly long carriageways accessing both Nantwich and Chester Roads. Nowadays these drives are only just traceable as the formerly very rural site finds itself absorbed into the Glastonbury Drive area. The protagonist of our pre-supermarket story became a beacon of the community. And this patch of landscape? It supported the growth of one of the oldest continuous commercial operations in Middlewich. For many in the town the words ‘Boosey’s’ and ‘garden centre’ still evoke nostalgia.Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritage...

Lewis, was at that time, a little run-down and run to seed but still kept trim and neat for the dwindling number of people using the sparse service of four trains per day between Crewe and Northwich.Dad decided that, before the train service was withdrawn, we ought to make one last valedictory journey to Crewe. Family legend has always had it that we were on our way to see the Queen who was opening a shopping centre in that illustrious railway town but, unfortunately, research for this article reveals no such Royal visit happening at that time. Perhaps my mind is confusing this occasion with an earlier one. Whatever the reason for our visit, though, I’ve always been grateful to Dad for letting me be one of the last people to travel the line on a regularly scheduled passenger train. I have travelled on the route twice since those days; once in 1999 on a diverted Inter-City 125 and again in 2008 in the Cheshire Gardens Express, the first steam train on the line for forty years. So, on that historic day sixty-three years ago Dad and I stood on the Crewe-bound platform waiting for ‘The Dodger’. The closure notices were already up at the station, and on the grimy windows of the train when it finally puffed its way into the station. The few remaining services were to be withdrawn on New Years Day 1960.Like the station, the train itself was looking a little the worse for wear. The seats in the compartment had been slashed and the stuffing was spilling out of them. Dad muttered darkly about ‘teddy boys’, those sinister pioneers of anti-social behaviour, who went round terrorising decent folk and wreaking havoc everywhere. We got on the train and puffed off in the direction of Sandbach. Even at the age of seven I knew that we were travelling into history.Ironically, the Middlewich line was to get busier and busier with freight once the passenger service had ended. The line is still there, awaiting its much needed revival as a passenger route. I’m looking forward to travelling to Crewe on it once again. Let’s hope I don’t have too long to wait.Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories
