M i dd l ewi ch Memo r ies S alt of the earth My Dad Arthur Roberts was born in 1906 and lived all his life in Middlewich in New King Street Nantwich Road and from 1959 until his death in 1972 in King Street just across the road from where he started out Most of his working life was spent at the Middlewich Salt Company later to become Cerebos Ltd where he was in charge of the generators which powered the vacuum salt plant predecessor of the one which British Salt has operated in Booth Lane since 1969 Some Sunday mornings Dad would be called out to the works to attend to the generators and I d go with him and stand and watch in awe as he calmly and methodically pulled switches and watched dials and meters to ensure that all was well I ve used and been fascinated by switches dials and meters ever since but mine have usually been concerned with playing records rather than making salt Dad was self taught like many in the 1920s and 1930s learning electrical engineering by correspondence course I used to look at the row of text books which stayed in the family for years very impressed that anyone least of all my Dad could not only understand all this arcane theory but also make a living from it Through the decades leading up to the late 1960s the traditional open pan salt works dotted around the town in Pepper Street Wych House Lane and Brooks lane were closed down and production concentrated on the vacuum plant at Cerebos and from 1969 at British Salt the most modern salt making plant in Europe There was though one crossover point between the old and new technologies At Cerebos there was a modern open pan facility which instead of a coal fire used a giant heating element powered by steam from Dad s generators It was Dad said like a giant electric kettle and could run for days on end producing tons of open pan salt Dad was a part of Middlewich and a part of its salt making tradition and one day he took me on a tour of some of the relics of old Middlewich and told me about what had once been here But all that s for another time Dave Roberts Arthur Roberts 1950s 8

N EAT vs Cardio fo r fat lo ss I t has been thought the key to weight loss is getting in the gym doing endless hours of boring cardio in the attempt to get rid of that unwanted body fat we have another solution but that s a different story NEAT is short for Non Exercise Activity Thermogenesis simply meaning the calories you burn throughout the day through daily activity walking to work using stairs cleaning the house shopping etc Everything you do throughout the day requires energy Therefore the more NEAT you do in a day the more overall calories you will burn We now know that weight loss put very simply comes from calories in vs calories out Therefore it doesn t matter how you go about moving more whether it s hours of horrendously boring cardio or simply increasing your daily expenditure Personally I would much prefer to walk more throughout the day get outside etc Therefore which is better for weight loss doing extra cardio or increasing NEAT Simply put either As long as you are putting yourself into a calorie deficit you will lose weight Whether you do this through added cardio in the gym or increasing NEAT is up to you From experience I recommend keeping cardio moderate where possible and increasing your NEAT Cardio is a tool and isn t always needed I d always recommend strength training before increasing cardio Another reason why I suggest limiting cardio is that 1 2 hours of cardio a day on top of strength training and a calorie deficit will most likely cause fatigue and under recovery 12 How to increase NEAT Walk to work Always take the stairs when possible Take a walk on your lunch break at work Get outside when possible A brisk morning walk is a great way to start the day Get on your feet or bicycle for short distance journeys rather than always driving Use a tracker to measure your daily steps and activity anything above 10 000 steps is great Take away points cardio is a very important tool for weight loss and can be used in most cases at some point Slight change in your daily routines and being more active can have a massive impact on your weight loss If you do have the opportunity throughout the day to get out and move more then go for it For some this isn t always possible For people working an office job and unable to get on their feet much then sometimes additional training is needed but there are FAR more efficient methods than walking on a treadmill for an hour ZERO44 Performance reopens April 20 for information on weight management strength conditioning or personal training get in touch Phil Rigden ZERO44 Performance

G o L o ca l me ets I f the last 12 months have inspired a life change in you perhaps Andrew Johnson s story will give you the confidence to follow your dreams Andrew describes himself as a Middlewich man born and bred Although he was actually born two minutes away in Byley he moved to Nantwich Road when he was five He went to Park Lane Juniors and the High School and he spent his youth in the Big Lock and Newton Brewery Andrew s mum still lives in Middlewich and he enjoys popping back to pay her a visit He is proud of his roots and when he comes back he is fascinated by the new developments He does recall feeling like he knew everybody when he was growing up and he s a little sad that that s changed over the years but that s progress for you Andrew had a long career in the motor trade and even owned a chippy but it was a life changing motorbike accident in 2002 that made him take stock It took him a few years to recover and during this time he would enjoy holidays with his family on the Ll n Peninsula It was one sunny day when he was enjoying a bike ride with his wife Lynne that they came across an old dairy farm which had been empty for 30 years The farm Bryn Tawel was looking unloved 16 and needed some work but Andrew could see past that With 11 acres of beautiful Welsh land and views of Bardsey Island Snowdon mountain range and Whistling Sands he knew this was where his future was going to be spent They took ownership in 2006 and spent the next five years clearing land working on the farm buildings and making it home They also got planning for their caravan site which Andrew describes as small quiet and perfect for couples and families Bryn Tawel which translated means quiet hill is located on a small country lane and is a short drive from Aberdaron Each caravan pitch has a wonderful sea view 16amp electric hook up and water The site can also accommodate a small amount of tents and dogs are welcome There are showers and toilets and a separate grassed area for games When you speak to Andrew his love for Byrn Tawel is very clear He said Why would I want to be anywhere else I am looking out to sea as I speak and the sun is shining over the green fields it is beautiful Establishing the caravan site has enabled him to share this beauty and people return year after year He is looking forward to opening up again soon and they have opened their diary for bookings It is only a 2 hour drive from Middlewich a journey Andrew his wife Lynne and his son James know well and they would welcome visitors from their home town to experience their little part of Wales Katy

Gra nd m a s kitchen Easter Treats Ingredients Cake Recipe 2 Large eggs Butter softened Golden caster sugar Self raising flour 1 4tsp Baking powder 1 Lemon Topping 4ozs Butter 8ozs Icing Sugar 1tbsp Cocoa powder 3tbsp warm water This Easter why not bake a treat for your family This simple recipe can be made with help from younger and older members of the family adding their own creativity to the designs It could be your own family Easter bake off just be creative Method First of all weigh 2 large eggs in their shells Use the same weight as the eggs for the butter sugar and flour In a medium sized mixing bowl add the softened butter sugar eggs sifted flour baking powder and the juice of half a lemon If preferred you can also add the zest of the lemon With a food mixer mix the ingredients together for 2 to 3 minutes until you have a smooth batter Put 12 paper cup cake cases into a muffin tin and spoon the mixture into the cases Bake in a preheated oven 190 C Fan 170 C Gas mark 5 for 15 to 20 minutes until well risen and golden brown You can test if they are cooked by inserting a skewer into the middle of a cake If it comes out clean the cakes are cooked Remove from the tin and cool on a wire rack For the chocolate frosting put 2tbsp of cocoa powder into a bowl and mix it with 3tbsp of warm water Allow to cool In a bowl beat 4ozs of softened butter with a fork until smooth then add the sifted icing sugar Mix together and add the cocoa mix until blended to make a creamy chocolate frosting 18

M i dd l ewi ch s h er ita ge A pril brings Eastertime and also St George s Day Yes but how does this relate to Middlewich s heritage Well George was world famous for slaying dragons So Remarkably there was once a time when this very town was plagued by its own fearsome creature A dragon no less The criminal at large lurked in the mossy ponds and marshes of Moston just far enough not to be actually seen very often Risk to the public was reputedly quite significant though because its appetite was not limited to distressed damsels No our home grown version happily consumed all such persons as he laid holde on Even more odious this dragon was a baby eater Help If ever Middlewich needed an action hero it was now or thereabouts Legend is rarely precise about dates but we are talking c 16th century Nobility obliges a protective function to the community it presides over Here the Venables family held this aristocratic honour So like St George himself it fell to one Thomas Venables to deal decisively with the troubling issue He didn t waste time hearing tell of considering the pitiful and daylie destruction of the people without recovery not regarding his own life did in his own persona valientlie courageiouslie set on the said dragon when first shot him through with an arrow and afterwards with other weapons manfullie slew him at which instant the said dragon was devouring of a child T h o m a s clearly took a belt and braces approach His p ublic spir ite d act became legendary locally Incorporated 22 Photo from Middlewich Heritage Trust onto the Venables family coat of arms was a heraldic crest to remind future generations of its heroic lineage The crest comprises a fishlike blue winged dragon or wyvern whose body is pierced by a golden arrow just as it is about to swallow a fair haired child The creature s image is set against the blue and white banded Venables shield St Michael s Church guards this heraldic screen dated 1632 Moston indeed has a Dragon s Lane Ground there is prone to water logging the landscape features Moston Long Flash This narrow lake continues to lengthen as a result of underground brine runs Did the dragon dwell here Unlikely The lake didn t appear until the 19th century It s the classic symbolic battle of good and light triumphing over evil and darkness re interpreted for time and place As April days become brighter the legend is quite fitting Legend Or do we really have valiant Thomas Venables to thank for keeping us dragon free Julie Elizabeth Smalley

L o ckd ow n sto r ies M arch 2020 we all remember the announcement that schools would be closed What a twelve months it has been As parents we have felt the pressures of home schooling and the worry about our son s future as I write this Archie has returned to school the pressure has eased but not gone away we are acutely aware of the challenges of learning he will face So in this edition we have bee speaking to Amanda Rose from Kumon Northwich to find out more about their services what has happened to tutoring during lockdown and a surprising story of a delayed celebration My name is Amanda Rose I am a Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner with a plethora of childcare and education related qualifications My vocation has always focussed on the empowerment of children young people and adults After taking voluntary redundancy from Cheshire West and Chester Council in August 2011 I invested my redundancy in establishing Kumon Northwich Maths and English Centre recruiting a team of likeminded people who over the last six years have empowered many many children young people and adults to achieve in maths English or both The celebrations planned for the centre s five year anniversary were abruptly halted when the Government announced the first lockdown and with it the suspension of face to face classes The centre was mothballed and moved lock stock and barrel to my home where I commandeered two rooms one for maths and the other for English My husband Andrew and I along with two part time members of the team began the process of remote learning to comply with the requirement to stay home and save the NHS 24 By March 31st the majority of our family members signed up to the new Kumon Northwich online Zoom classes and so began our six day a week online weekly Kumon Zoom classes Our wonderful students have progressed through their one to one or family zoom sessions appearing like clockwork for their weekly class Students knew which work they are required to undertake during their Zoom class and were confident of receiving the just right level of support that allowed them to remain independent self learners It has been a privilege to be allowed into our student s homes on a weekly basis and further affirmation of the trust that is an integral part of being a member of the Kumon Northwich family Time slotting regular communication and ongoing feedback have always been key but this has been a little trickier during the second lockdown with the schools online teaching and now the additional challenges as schools reopened to all pupils from the 8th March But our priority continues to be the progress and achievement of each and every student as well as the well being of their whole family When in centre classes reopen there will be the option of a weekly in centre learning in one of our Covid 19 secure bubbles with a one way system signage temperature checks masks and hand sanitising all in place or a weekly online zoom class However our families choose to continue their learning we can wait to support them and we will quietly celebrate our 6th birthday of empowering our students If you are interested in finding out more about Kumon Northwich you can contact Amanda on 01606 76468

Wo rk of a rt T he Beer Emporium Bottle Bank in Holmes Chapel is An award winning craft beer shop bar offering 550 bottled beers wines spirits ciders to drink in or take away and 12 draught ales from the world s best breweries Over the last few months Middlewich artist Ian HillSmith has been adding a splash of colour to the walls with some of his wonderful art Ian moved to Holmes Chapel when he was 10 growing up here before moving away to university begin life outside of the family home He moved back to the area some 20 years ago settling down in Middlewich It was through a change in circumstance that Ian turned his passion from a hobby into a profession having injured himself while working at a special needs school The now or never question was asked Ian has been painting ever since Ian s early work was largely based on caricatures portraits done to commission but these days he is focused on making original paintings prints of the artwork he creates himself This change has allowed Ian to express himself more visually put down on canvas his interpretation of the subject matter It is not just the use of colour that makes Ian s painting special but how where texture is added from 32 his brushwork Relishing in the freedom to add so much more to a piece of art Ian s work has been transformed each new piece vibrant edgy full of life The mural at The Bottle Bank came as a result of doing a similar piece of wall art at its sister bar The Beer Emporium in Sandbach In Sandbach incidentally where Ian s also known to pull a few pints on a regular basis his remit was to capture the essence of the Emp how it has integrated its small but perfectly poured pints into the community It was only when chatting with Hope about making a wall at the Bottle Bank more exciting the question was asked if Ian could feature some of the more popular drinks loved by their customers Ian s creativity further developed the scene ultimately finishing with it representing 44 different brewers vintners distillers all having a convivial drink at the bar alongside a few nods to the village location clientele This labour of love took Ian more than 125 hrs to complete something that is evident in the level of detail he went into You can find more about Ian and his artwork on Facebook by simply searching for Ian Hill Smith Artist where you can see buy a number of his pieces you can try to identify all 44 images the next time you go to the Bottle Bank

Powers o f Atto r n ey W hat are They and Who Needs Them As individuals we have great powers which we take for granted Powers include the right to select where and what medical care is administered to making financial decisions signing documents with matters relating to money and property So if an individual loses Mental Capacity they are treated as a vulnerable person therefore those powers are suspended This means following loss of capacity diagnosis any bank account accounts in that individual person s name would be frozen preventing access to any money Similarly if an individual were to lose capacity and needed medical treatment doctors would make the final decision in the best interests of the person the family and loved ones would not have any input Fortunately you can plan ahead to protect yourself by making Powers of Attorney this is where you appoint loved ones or friends to act in your place There are two types of Powers of Attorney one protects Financial and Property decisions and the other Medical decisions It should be noted that upto 2007 Enduring Powers of Attorney existed and only protect Property and Financial decisions In the event of an individual losing capacity and not having a Lasting Power of Attorney in place loved ones would need to apply to the Court of Protection to apply for a deputyship this is both costly and time consuming 42 You can select anyone to be your Attorney provided that they are aged over 18 and have mental capacity themselves You can appoint as many attorneys as you like although for practical purposes it is best to stick to a maximum of about 4 For both Powers of Attorney most people appoint their attorneys from people closest to them You could choose spouse adult children aged over 18 close friends or godchildren It is important to choose people who are you know well and whom you trust to make sure your wishes are made Lasting Powers of Attorney are registered with the Office of the Public Guardian this can take a while but once registered they are ready whenever and should the individual lose capacity Enduring Power of Attorney on the other hand are signed in advance but not registered until needed therefore causing a delay when needed the most Who should make a Power of Attorney With Dementia affecting 1 in 12 people aged 65 and above and by the age of 80 it s as much as 1 in 6 age is a major consideration Other things to consider include stroke brain haemorrhage tumours and cancer or the effect of a serious injury for example 5000 motorcyclists are seriously injured on the road every year many suffering lifealtering head injuries Basically any one over 18 should be considering making Powers of Attorney however in reality it is predominately the over 60 s Dave Burgess DPB Will Writing Service
