March always feels like a time of renewal, when the days start to get warmer, and we feel more inclined to venture outside after our enforced Winter hibernation. In this edition we have a special article about World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st, written by Down Syndrome Cheshire, who a wonderful friend of mine Julie is the Chair – she is also the mum of Josh who has Down Syndrome and she is an inspiration to me. And with mothers in mind…don’t forget Mothers Day on the 27th!I would also like to send my regards to Jane Barker and Reg Jackson who are both retiring this month, good luck and all the best for the future.Another date of note I was intrigued to learn about is March 9th, which is “Made in UK Day". Founded in 2011, this is a day when we’re being encouraged to celebrate UK manufacturing by buying something made in the UK and sharing it using the hashtag #madeinukday. The organisers say that if everyone bought just one item made in the UK worth £20 it would be worth £1.3 billion in revenue! You can find out more by visiting www.makeitbritish.co.uk, plus if you’re a UK business owner there are free resources to download. That just leaves room for a reminder that the clocks go forward on 27th March. Whatever this month has in store for you, please take care. Until next time...Remember to tell our advertisers you found them in Go LocalGo Local Middlewich is part of

8Te chnology...We all know we need antivirus software, right? And it is an expensive business for AV vendors to keep their software up-to-date, so we should expect to pay for it, right? On the other hand, the vendors have to compete not only with each other, including free offerings. The result can be some underhand tactics to get you to pay up. A situation that made one journalist question whether some AV products weren’t as bad as the stuff they are supposed to guard against. (They are not: you don’t want a real virus, believe me, but there’s a point there.) Last week I came across a customer who had paid £70 for a year’s coverage for 10 computers (she owned one), plus extra for VPN, which she didn’t need. A quick word with me could have saved her £100.So what do I recommend for you? Do you need to pay anything? Firstly, Microsoft Defender is built into Windows and has improved to the point where it is not bad. It switches on automatically if there is no other AV installed, so you are never completely unprotected. The trouble is, it is not very comprehensive and can be confusing, so I still recommend third-party AV.TIP: Go into the AV program’s settings and turn off all the ads, offers etc. you can.Free AV acts as advertising for the paid-for programs. In many cases the AV engines are the same. What they tend to do is lack the extra protection such as screening websites before you visit them. And the pop-up messages urging you to upgrade can be pretty distracting – though paying up doesn’t necessarily stop them trying to foist other options onto you too. If you don’t want to pay a penny, go for Avast (avast.com) and studiously ignore the upgrade messages. My number one tip is: buy from Amazon. If you respond to an in-program renewal or upgrade message, you pay full price. Just buy licences for the devices (PCs, laptops, tablets, phones) you possess. E.g. for five devices, buy a 5-licence package. My top tips:• F-Secure Safe £18.90 – 1 PC, 1 yr (pcpro.link/322safe)• Kaspersky Internet Security £10.90 – 1 PC, 1yr (pcpro.link/322kasp)• Bitdefender Internet Security 2022 £14.99 – 3 PCs, 1yr (pcpro.link/322bit)Other licence lengths, number of devices, are available.Do I need a VPN?A VPN (Virtual Private Network) encrypts the entirety of your Internet traffic and disguises your location. If you use a laptop in a public location, you need one. If not – well, if you live somewhere like China and are an anti-government activist, then yes. Otherwise ignore the messages saying your IP address can be seen by others.Bitdefender FreeIf you didn’t get the message, this expired in the new year. I have installed it in the past on customers’ machines. Get one of the above, uninstall BD Free and install its replacement.Andrew goggleboxtech.ukUP TO £1,000 DEPOSIT CONTRIBUTION†5.4% APR REPRESENTATIVE*£199 SERVICE PLAN^3 YEARS’ ROADSIDE ASSISTANCEDRIVEN BY SOMETHING DIFFERENTTHE ALL-NEW ŠKODA FABIA*At the end of the agreement there are three options: i) pay the optional final payment and own the vehicle; ii) return the vehicle: subject to excess mileage and fair wear and tear, charges may apply; or iii) replace: part exchange the vehicle. With Solutions Personal Contract Plan. 18s+. 12We all know about tower bells, tolling out across the countryside. Not so many of us are acquainted with their smaller, older cousins, the hand bells. Perhaps the main advantage of hand bell ringing is the playing of tunes, which is well nigh impossible with the big bells. Paradoxically, the St. Michael and All Angels Ringing Team (SMAART) was formed as a result of a demonstration in 1999 to the local Mothers’ Union by George Bailey, then a tower bell ringer and choir master at St. Michael and All Angels church, Middlewich. His demonstration provoked interest amongst the members, resulting in a team being formed. With help from a neighbouring, established team SMAART developed steadily and started to give performances in all sorts of venues, including Tatton Park, Little Moreton Hall, for various community groups, care homes and even in the foyers of Asda in Winsford and Tesco in Middlewich.Happily no musical knowledge is required, just the ability to count to six, eight and even up to nine! Sometimes this proves more challenging than you might expect and practices are always punctuated by peals of laughter! We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly and enthusiastic team and like nothing more than to share our love of hand bells. We meet each Monday evening from 7pm.As mentioned above, hand bells have been around for a very long time and certainly existed during the Roman Empire. However, it was not until they had moved into the church that they became associated with music making, perhaps as a simple accompaniment to chants. By the 19th century tune ringing was well established, with large teams and hundreds of bells entering prestigious competitions. Unfortunately, this declined during the fi rst half of the 20th century, but since the 1960s there has been a distinct revival, with over 1700 teams registered with the Hand bell Ringers of Great Britain and many more around the world.Over the years we have expanded our range of bells to cover almost three octaves, and have also invested in hand chimes, belleplates and mallets to provide a bit of diversity. As you might expect, after more than 20 years we have an extensive catalogue of music, ranging from classical to folk songs, hymns, carols and much more.We have at last resumed our regular practices at Willowmere in Middlewich and are looking forward to playing for an audience again. If you are interested in fi nding out more about us, or joining us, or if you wish to see if we can play for you, please contact Chris Overton on 01606 215124. World Down Syndrome Day is nearly upon us, and plans are underway for residents, schools, businesses and community groups to celebrate by raising awareness and funds throughout the county. The campaign, led in our region by the charity Down Syndrome Cheshire, is marked annually on 21st March which signifies the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes the learning disability.Down Syndrome Cheshire was originally set up in 2007 by a group of local mums who all had babies with the syndrome and wanted them to thrive and grow to live the life they choose. In the early days the small group met to support one another and share advice and information. Those babies are now teenagers, and the charity has continued to develop to support in the region of 270 families in and around Cheshire by providing information, advice, education advocacy, speech and language therapy, family support, sport, activities and training. The charity has won numerous awards and was most recently named as Charity Group of the Year 2022 at the Community ReAwards. Julie Duff whose son Josh has Down’s syndrome, is Chair of the charity. She encourages families to get in touch for the first time, “We’ve been through that journey, we’ve walked in their shoes, and we can really take a lot of the fear out of some of the emotions that they might be feeling if they have or are expecting a child with Down syndrome.”Following years of not being able to fundraise due to the pandemic, the charity has big plans for World Down Syndrome Day 2022. Businesses, community groups and individuals are being asked to fundraise by wearing colourful socks, filling a sock with loose change to donate or by taking part in a sponsored Tri-Challenge to tackle three different sponsored activities to clock up the magic number 21. Challenge ideas include walking 5k, running 5k and cycling 11k to clock up 21k or doing 5 star jumps, 5 burpees and 11 squats combining a total of 21 moves. Down Syndrome Cheshire CEO Lawrence Caygill explains, “The reason why our fundraising campaign is focused on the number 21 and colourful socks is because people living with Down’s syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 and chromosomes look like socks!”All of the money raised will be spent on the charity’s work to support people who have Down’s syndrome in Cheshire.Sock it to them!

24wheeliewheeliewheeliegood fungood fungood fun2020 was not a good year for most businesses. The financial strain of being in and out oflockdown caused so many businesses to close permanently. However, business was boomingin the cycling industry with record bike sales in 2020. With a lot more people working fromhome, only able to go out to exercise, many started taking to outdoor pursuits to stay inshape. Thankfully, we were blessed with a beautiful summer and cycling was an opportunitymany took advantage of to gain some much-needed freedom.Although bike sales went through the roof, it was soon cut short when reduced workforceswere unable to meet demand. Bike components became almost impossible to find and therewas no certainty on delivery dates. With more a more cyclists in and around Middlewich, it seemed like a great opportunity to launch acycling club. To serve the local community andsupport cyclists of all abilities. Whether theywant to cycle competitively, get in shape,or just come along and enjoy the socialrides, everyone's welcome. BeforeMiddlewich Cycling Club, if you wantedto join a local club or group you had totravel to Winsford, Sandbach, orHolmes Chapel to get out on a ride. That could add another 10 milesbefore you even start your ride. Why Join? Why Join? Why Join?Meet new friends, indulge yourcycling hobby, and represent the clubwearing our branded clothing.Sponsor discounts - ask the club for details!Get a discount with our partners, like 10% off at The Little Lock Café in Middlewich.

26I’ve been taking a look back at the Middlewich of 1970 and finding out that, as the saying goes, the more things change, the more they stay the same.1970, announced UDC Chairman Wilfrid Faulkner, was to be ‘A Year of Progress’. The Civic Hall had opened the previous September (on my 17th birthday, to be precise), and the town was looking forward to the opening of a new fire station and a new County Library.Interestingly, the site originally chosen for the library was behind the council offices on what is now the ‘Civic Centre’.The Council was much taken with the idea of building - wait for it - a swimming pool, and included a sum of £2000 in the provisional estimates for spending that year.More mundanely, the General purposes Committee placed an order for two gross of galvanised dustbins at 36 shillings each, for resale to the public at £2 each.In May Councillor Harry Dale took over as UDC Chairman at the age of 59. Middlewich, he said, echoing his predecessor’s brave words, was ‘On the Brink of Great Things’.Which didn’t prevent Middlewich life from continuing as normal. In June a ‘rampaging gang’ broke windows in the Council offices and, on another occasion, notices were taken from doors on the ground floor. Council officials reacted in their usual laid-back fashion. Surveyor Donald Stubbs took it all in his stride: ‘It looks as though we will have to paint notices on the doors,’ he said.‘Mac’ Telfer raised the subject of a Swimming Pool again in July and said that councils in some areas were able to provide pools at a very low cost by ‘joint community action’. A figure of only £9000 was quoted. The council referred Mr Telfer to the Swimming Baths Sub-Committee.The Fire Station finally opened at 14:13 on the 4th August 1970 and had its first call out at 14.15, just two minutes later. The council was much aggravated by motorists who insisted on parking on the new fire station access road, ‘Civic Way’. Councillor Faulkner asked, ‘what use is there in the town having a fire station if we can’t get the fire engine out?’.Councillors always get to the nub of the matter.I’m grateful to the late Albert Appleton and Bill Ward for some of the information in this article.Dave RobertsMiddlewich MemoriesMiddlewich Fire Station Open Day 2018

281st March is a tasty date in this year’s list of festivals. Does it ring any bells? Well, it might. More silence, or at least a softer soundscape, was formerly the norm, even though Middlewich had its rowdy annual fairs, thronged weekly markets, and not-so-occasional public nuisance. Peals from bell towers acted as a clock to regulate citizens’ lives. The tower at Middlewich’s parish church was erected around 1500. By the middle of the 16th century St Michael’s already had a peal of four bells. By 1711 there were six. Besides chiming for services there were other reminders. A curfew bell meant time to cover fires (from the French ‘couvre-feu’) and go to bed. Passing bells sounded when it was time for the soul to move on.And the first day of March 2022? It marks Shrove Tuesday. In the Christian calendar this begins the observance of Lent, the lean season leading up to Easter. Fasting was encouraged, for the practical reason that little fresh food was available by the very end of winter. As a final celebratory gesture before the sacrifice, all eggs and fats were to be used up. Hence, the custom of pancakes. In the same spirit, but with vastly different connotations, the word ‘carnival’ possibly arose from/a Latin term meaning ‘farewell to meat’. The French carnival of Mardi Gras is a joyful excuse to have fun before the fast. It translates, somewhat less glamorously, as ‘Fat Tuesday’.And this is where the appealingly named ‘Pancake Bell’ came in. Rung each year at around 11 a.m. or in some areas noon, it signified the hour to shut up shop for the pre-Lenten holiday - whilst housewives cooked pancakes. By the time confessions had been heard in church those floury feasts would be ready to enjoy. This quirky, but sensible, tradition lasted in many places well into the 20th century. Scarborough continued it into the 21st.Besides church bells, also ringing came the burly bringer of news, catching attention with a handbell. A conduit for official and occasional royal proclamations, town criers had plenty to say that the timekeeping bells could not. In fact, this office-bearer’s functions were quite diverse. If need be, he might make a handy strongman to assist in law and order. And as for ‘oh yea, oh yea’, like many words this is an English version of old French oyez meaning ‘listen, everyone’.Although unlikely to hear that appetising Pancake Bell, quite likely many of us will be ‘dutiful’ and use up those last ingredients.Julie Elizabeth SmalleyMiddlewich’s heritageEasy pancakesIngredients100g plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml milk1 tbsp sunflower or vegetable oil, plus a little extra for frying. 32As a company director or business owner, there are many responsibilities, some regulatory and some legal. One that rarely gets any consideration but is of great importance is what would happen to the company should the inevitable happen and you pass away (the word inevitable is used purposely because we will all pass away, we just don’t know when) or potentially even worse for the business, what would happen if a co-director/owner were to pass away. As an employer, there are further legal responsibilities but also having staff there is a moral responsibility to ensure they are paid and for that to be possible the business must be able to continue and produce a financial return for staff wages, directors/owners dividends/wages, reinvestment and investors. So when relaxing tonight with your family, ask yourself these 3 questions. 1. What thought and plans have you got for your role, the affect on the running of the company, shares in the company, if you were to pass away tomorrow? 2. What thought and plans have you got should your business partner or a co-director pass away overnight? i.e what would happen to their shares3. What though and plans have you got should you, or your family or fellow director were to lose mental capacity? With these questions in mind, let’s look at a case study... Andrew and Brian run a successful building business, unfortunately Andrew fell off his bike and suffered severe head injuries which initially resulted in loss of mental capacity. Ordinarily, in this situation bank accounts would be frozen including those in joint names. Imagine Brian trying to continue running the business whilst he cannot again access to the business bank accounts so he cannot pay suppliers, subcontractors, employees, the company’s creditors or even Brian’s wages. Similarly, Andrew’s family would equally have suffered not been able to get access to his bank accounts to pay household bills but also have no control over the treatment Andrew was receiving. But what unlike many other business Andrew and Brian had planned for the future so they had arranged Lasting Powers of Attorney. So with Andrew having lost capacity, he had appointed both his business partner and accountant as his attorney’s to continue with his responsibilities within the business, they had also taken prudent financial advice which along with the Lasting Powers of Attorney allowed the business to continue. Equally, by planning ahead it had allowed Andrew to appoint his spouse and children (aged over 18) to look after his personal finances and to direct the medical professions on what care he wanted and what his wishes were. Again with prudent financial advice and the Lasting Powers of Attorney Andrew’s family had one less thing to worry about. If instead, Andrew had passed away, without any planning it would have been a nightmare situation for both Andrew’s family and for Brian. Now consider if Andrew were going through a divorce, his soon to be ex-spouse would have received his estate including his share of the business. Andrew’s ex-spouse could now elect to get involved in the business, do nothing but take their portion of the profits or even look to sell their portion of the business to a competitor. Again, Andrew and Brian had plans within his Will, so upon Andrew’s passing his part of the business and/or shares got passed to Brian and with financial planning Andrew’s loved ones and not his spouse received the estate in line with Andrew’s wishes. Also by having plans in place it gives peace of mind both to directors/owners, shareholders and other financial institutions who have an interest in the company. PLANS like these mean business can continue, employees can keep their jobs and businesses can flourish.David Burgess, DPB Will Writing ServicesWills & Business...

36Imagine being able to access important community services to get information on employment, training, health and wellbeing – in Middlewich twice a month, without having to catch a bus to Crewe or get a lift. Somewhere simple to get to, whatever your age and whether you have a job or not. Somewhere to go if you just need some advice and there are lots of organisations all in one place…Well, imagine no more because this has become a reality. It is the idea of the lovely Nicky from the Middlewich District Foodbank and the work of Lucie Ferneyhough, Cheshire East Councils Community Development Officer.Middlewich Hub is part of SMASH, which stands for ‘Sandbach, Middlewich, Alsager, Scholar Green and Haslington’, and from March twice a month in the Methodist Church, Booth Lane, there will be drop-in sessions for residents to attend for advice, support and a cup of tea.Lucie has so far enlisted 16 organisations to be involved, and more are signing up all the time – these include Middlewich Town Council, DWP, Citizens Advice Cheshire East, NHS, Social Prescribers, Everybody Sport and Recreation, Family Services, Foodbank, One You, ANSA and Employment Projects. The location of the Methodist Church has been chosen due to it being on the edge of the Cledford estate, which has the highest levels of deprivation in Middlewich. The idea of having the Hub here is so those that need it most can access it easily and will not require public transport or a car to get there. This new and exciting hub is still very much in the early stages, and the first sessions are planned for March. The plan is to split the organisations into two groups: Health and Wellbeing and Employment, Education, Training and Benefits. We will hold two sessions per month on a Wednesday, and we will alternate between the morning and afternoon. The absolute aim of the Hub is to support the residents of our community. Even if you think this might not be for you, is there someone you know who would benefit from coming along? They may be a new mum or dad feeling isolated, or perhaps they’re struggling to manage or understand the current increase in cost of living. Maybe they need money management advice, maybe they are at a junction in their career, or maybe they are elderly and feeling lonely. Tell them about the Hub, where there will be a friendly face and they can find out what help and support is available.KatyGo Local meets...Wednesday 9th March Health & Wellbeing 9.15am – 10.30amWednesday 23rd March Employment & Education 1.15pm –2.30pmWednesday 20th April Health & Wellbeing 1.15pm – 2.30pmWednesday 27th April Employment & Education 9.15am - 10.30amWednesday 11th May Health & Wellbeing 9.15am - 10.30amWednesday 25th May Employment & Education 1.15pm – 2.30pmMiddlewich Methodist Church, Booth LaneSESSION DATES
