M i dd l ewi ch Memo r ies I ve been wondering for quite a while if there might be interest in a personal view of Middlewich and the many changes which have happened here over almost seventy years Now completely out of the blue Go Local has offered me the chance to find out Middlewich Memories will be exactly what the title implies reminiscences of a lifetime spent in this unique and to me endlessly fascinating part of the world This series won t be another re telling of the history of our town We ll leave that to the always excellent Julie Smalley who has been enlightening us on the subject in this magazine for many years Those who wish to delve further into the long story of Middlewich can find out more in the works of local historian Allan Earl who was many years ago one of my work colleagues at Middlewich UDC I ll be looking at how Middlewich has changed over the decades from scruffy smoky industrial salt town in the 1950s to the largely residential Middlewich of today remembering some of the people and places I ve known over the years looking at long lost buildings institutions and industries and considering just how and why Middlewich has become the place it is in the 21st Century I ll also be remembering some of the characters I ve known over the years and recounting some of their exploits Everyone has a story to tell and this town has always been full of memorable people who deserve to be commemorated Over the years I ve been involved in many aspects of the town as mentioned I have worked for the Middlewich UDC was one of the founders of the Heritage Society and publicity officer for the Folk Boat Festival I have been chairman of the Rail Link Campaign and editor of The Middlewich Diary I was even for a regrettably short time Middlewich s first Community Mayor I hope you ll join me here each month and enjoy reading these Middlewich Memories as much as I know I m going to enjoy writing them Because there s a lot more to Middlewich than you may think Dave Roberts Seddon s Salt Works Brooks Lane circa 1969 8

Te chn ol o gy Raspb er ry P i I t is not often that I read about a new computer and immediately order one but that is what I did when I heard about the new Raspberry Pi 400 What is it that makes it such an exciting proposition even for this old codger Firstly price For less than 100 you get a machine that can be used as a low power desktop PC and has amazing potential as an educational resource Secondly it takes its cues from the home computers of the 80s the computer is built into the keyboard Buy the kit for just 94 and plug it into a monitor or any TV with an HDMI input and you have a machine that can be used for office tasks like word processing and spreadsheets email surfing the web and even watching video at 4K resolution This model is the fastest Pi yet and is a very capa ble machine that even outperforms a Microsoft tablet costing 400 Do note though that it does not run Windows and compatibility issues might limit using it as a full office replacement or with schools remote learning platforms more on my website However it is what it could do in the hands of a young person that really excites me Not only does it come with all the software a child needs to for homework from primary to secondary level but also comes with a book and the necessary software to teach you how to program the machine and create your own 10 games and more After a period when schools tended to concentrate more on using computers rather than programming them nowadays referred to as coding and really understanding how they work the Raspberry Pi comes as a breath of fresh air and at a price where the goal of a computer for every child is realistic Like every Pi before it it has an expansion port that can be used to control other devices like lights and motors and react to switches and sensors so it can interact with the physical world which is more exciting and motivating for children than just onscreen action A wide variety of devices can be plugged into it from touchscreens to radio and TV receivers from robot kits and a camera to every thing you need for a weather station the sky is the limit More information can be found on my website at www goggleboxtech uk blog Andrew Gogglebox Tech

Ref le cti o n A New Year can bring new beginnings resolutions goals and promises But I never imagined it would bring another lockdown at least I hoped it wouldn t As we face it again I ve been reflecting on the last two lockdowns I know we all experienced them in different ways and faced personal challenges I only hope you have found the occasions to smile perhaps even laugh and cherish those moments as those are the moments to reflect on Home schooling was hard there is no other word for it There were tantrums there were tears and utter defiance but my children still love me Amongst all this laughter joy and new experiences We danced and sang in the kitchen to The Greatest Showman when we should have been doing maths We planted sunflowers watered them and watched them grow to over 6 feet Science We watched Horrible Histories the movie when we should have been studying History We got relatively fit through our daily walk around Middlewich and along the canal my boys refused to do PE with Joe Wicks Then came the lockdown birthdays my 40th did I tell you that Elvis called me my youngest 9th and oldest 11th Like many people I was disappointed to have my birthday in lockdown but it was probably the most memorable birthday yet I mean who else got a phone call from the King May saw us celebrating as a Country VE Day A perfect opportunity to teach History again which is one of my favourite subjects The day was tied up in a bow by a street party in our Close It was a success although it was tough not to hug my fabulous neighbours especially after a few Proseccos 14 Then came the summer holidays this time they didn t seem as daunting after all we had already stayed at home for three months what s a few more As a family we were unbelievably fortunate to be able to go on holiday in August After a short flight to Frankfurt followed by a three hour wait a three hour flight to Rhodes and a one hour taxi ride we arrived in Lindos It was worth every hour and we felt safer there than we did back home September came and the boys finally returned to school albeit a different setup but still they were being taught correctly Another short lockdown took us into December and the run up to Christmas It may not have been the Christmas we all had hoped and planned for as a country but we made it to Christmas When you look back on 2020 and perhaps even 2021 look for the happy moments look through your images saved on your camera reel or your social media photos and see all the great times you had I m not a believer in New Year s resolutions but I would recommend practising gratitude if you were to choose one Each day when you wake spend a few minutes to think about what you are grateful for It can be something as simple as I am grateful for this day I am grateful to have a warm house I am grateful for my health Think about what you have in your life Then write down just three things Do this every day and watch your mindset change your outlook becomes positive and in turn you will attract positivity and spread it like attracts like I hope you ve enjoyed my articles throughout 2020 and I hope to continue writing for you It s been a privilege and a pleasure being able to write for Go Local magazine Jody Woodbridge

Gra nd m a s kitchen Easy Ham Vegetable Soup Method Boil the ham in enough water to cover the joint 30 minutes per 500g plus 30 minutes Remove the ham from the water and set aside The stock from the ham joint will be used to make the soup If preferred you can use chunks of leftover ham and a ham stock cube In a large saucepan melt the butter and add the onion and leek cook gently until softened add the celery carrots potato and swede Mix together until coated in the butter Add enough ham stock to the saucepan until all the vegetables are covered add the lentils and bring to the boil Simmer the soup for about 45 minutes until the lentils are cooked and then add chunks of the cooked ham Season to taste Serve with warmed crusty bread and enjoy Simply delicious Ingredients Small joint of ham 1 onion chopped finely 1 leek sliced 1 stick of celery sliced 2 potatoes cut in large chunks 2 carrots cut in chunks 1 2 small swede diced 100g red lentils make sure they do not need to be soaked before cooking Knob of butter Black pepper to season W hen the winter days are cold and frosty a bowl of homemade soup can warm your soul this simple soup is delicious and one of our favourites 20

G o L o ca l me ets Il Pad rino A t the end of 2019 a new restuarant was opening in Middlewich in the first few weeks of being open we visited for a meal the food the venue and addition to our town was amazing 2020 has been a challenging time for restaurants but resiliance is in thier nature in this edition we meet Claire Alberto Halluni owners of Il Padrino Our Beautiful Italian Restaurant based in the heart of Middlewich stands proudly in the historic Alhambra building on Wheelock Street If you had asked me in October 2019 Are you doing the right thing opening another Italian restaurant my immediate answer would have been yes We had found a great location for Il Padrino and were excited to launch the restaurant later that month No one could have predicted the horrendous first year of trading that we were about to face But even now almost a year into a global pandemic that has shaken our business to the core my answer would still be yes Il Padrino is here to stay We offer such a beautiful dining experience with great home cooked food and a service like no other if I do say so myself I m proud of how far we have come and how in the most uncertain of times we have still been able to help others Throughout last summer we delivered free food to NHS staff for 15 weeks at huge cost to the business but it was something we felt we had to do That s what we are 24 about my husband Alberto always puts others first and finds a positive solution 2020 was a rollercoaster of a year which ended with our sister restaurant Don Alberto in Holmes Chapel winning The Go Local Keep Local Restaurant of The Year award from Cheshire Life That has given us a huge boost to move forward into the New Year with a positive outlook January s swift lockdown hasn t quite given us the start we expected but this will not stop us It will not deflate our minds and we will push forward We are pleased to still be able to offer our takeaways every Friday and Saturday night for the foreseeable future Lockdown has provided us with plenty of time for planning We have lots of exciting ideas up our sleeves and just hope we can get cracking in the not so near future First on the list will be a celebratory evening when the restaurant can reopen for dining This will entail live music a delicious set menu and people being able to book seats and dance the night away Lastly our wonderful staff deserve recognition for working under such challenging times They have all been so supportive and positive throughout it s incredible To our customers we thank you immensely for your continued support and community spirit Il Padrino is looking forward to welcoming you back in much brighter times

M i dd l ewi ch s h er ita ge C inema and restaurant visits this year Hope so Historically however what were social evenings on the town like a century ago Slip back to Edwardian Middlewich Past connects present in visible ways What better link than a Picture Palace Reeling locals in from 1906 Wheelock St s very own silent movie theatre A live pianist played along to film footage Variety acts were Music Hall style Popular but basic it operated from a disused Salvation Army barracks built 1889 Meanwhile dining out was finding favour in cities but with just 5000 souls not here although travellers putting up at the White Bear in 1914 could have dinner for three shillings and sixpence Nevertheless takeaway options came courtesy of the nation s fried fish dealers On the eve of the Great War seven operated here Were some of these proprietors your ancestors Lewin St offered three choices Richard Sant at number 4 John Royle at 61 and Thomas Blackham number 93 Joseph Maddock sold fried fish on Nantwich Rd and on Sandbach Rd was Mrs Sarah Hollinshead Dishing out at 80 Wheelock St was Mrs Annie Woodbine whilst Miss Sarah Ann Percival did the same at number 88 Directly opposite these last two managed by Arthur F Sutcliffe was the now called Middlewich Electric Palace Something even more exciting though lay ahead enter the silver screen Yes a picture drome A brand new entertainment venue opened in the heart 30 of Wheelock St thanks to businessmen Oswald Barker Whitehead JP and C Whitehead in February 1920 This followed 1919 s dreadful Spanish Flu pandemic Holding up to 560 eager cinema goers The Alhambra likely recalled a famous one of that name in London s Leicester Square Its swagged cement fa ade by Harry Wilkinson was topped by an equally applicable W By 1939 Middlewich had around 6000 people with appetites for both films and fish chips Again seven premises served up 49 Lewin St was Mrs E C Buckley Wilfred Jarman at 80 Kinderton St Harry Ellis at 5 Lower St and William Whitehouse on 11 Alexandra Rd 88 Wheelock St same address as twenty five years earlier now contained Miss Dorothy Price Likewise the 80 Wheelock St shop was kept going by Mrs Eliza A Hopkins still a takeaway today 20 Booth Lane was Mrs Henrietta Mault a name and location which long managed to continue tradition That picture palace barracks building Surviving Front and side elevations reveal its once public role And Middlewich s centre town crowd pleaser With neat circularity it became restaurants Julie Elizabeth Smalley
