2Welcome & Contents!07541 600 131 • golocalmiddlewich.comfor advertising information www.archpublications.comKa x Love paper, please recycle after readingChristmas is coming… I know that is stating the obvious, but it can’t be ignored! The great news is that, fingers crossed, it will be a more ‘normal’ year this time round. The Christmas light switch is back on 3rd December at the Bull Ring, with entertainment, rides and fireworks, and we also have a concert celebrating the season on the 4th by the Middlewich and District Concert Society at Middlewich Community Centre. On the 11th, Comedy Night Live returns to The Turnpike with a quality line-up of three fantastic professional comedians, and throughout December all of our eateries are doing special Christmas meals, including the Kinderton, who have a festive afternoon tea, sharing platters and tasty two- and three-course options. Plus, don’t forget that Santa’s sleigh will be winding through the streets of our town – I am sure you are as excited as I am to see the big man himself! Finally, I want to mention the reason why we have changed our paper. We are constantly looking at how we can provide a sustainable publication. Our goal is to work across our entire supply chain to help reduce our carbon footprint. The simple change of paper stock can help us achieve this goal, it means less raw materials go in to producing the paper. This in turn reduces the transportation weight, so more can be shipped in the same volume, both before and after production; and for our delivery team, they can carry more copies for the same weight, reducing the need for more drops, and finally our magazine is fully recyclable. These small changes can have a big impact on sustainability, but the beating heart of Go Local remaining the same.I hope you enjoy reading this edition, you have a lovely Christmas and New Year, and I will see you in 2022!!In this editionGo Local meets... 6Finlay’s Rocket is a new children’s picture book by the local author and illustrator team of Philip Latham and Ian Hill-Smith, who collaborate under the collective name of Hillstart Publishing. It is the story, told in humorous rhyme and packed with lively full colour illustrations, of young Finlay and his plans to build a rocket by repurposing items from his dad’s shed. His ambitions take an unexpected turn when a bit of extreme weather rolls in.Philip is originally from Sandbach, and Ian grew up in Holmes Chapel, and both have been settled in Middlewich for over twenty years. Around five years ago, while helping to start a literary festival in the town, the pair discovered that they had complementary skill sets, and it just so happened they lived 4 doors from each other. The seeds for Hillstart Publishing were sown.Over the subsequent years Philip and Ian have run a number of interactive workshops based around Philip’s stories and Ian’s artwork, encouraging the young people of Middlewich to embrace and explore their creativity, but there was always the desire to take things a step further and get published. The first lockdown allowed for some time and energy to be expended on this ambition. Ian finalised his illustrations and they started investigating how to make Finlay’s Rocket into a reality. It seemed sensible, whatever the ultimate course of action was to be, to have a physical copy of the book produced, if only as a prototype to show agents and publishers.Following a conversation with another Middlewich resident – Ant Harding – who already had a book in print, Ian was pointed to a printer who specialises in self-publishing, and began the journey into paper stock, laminate options, page dimensions, binding types, bleeds and spot UV varnishing. The other consideration was how to afford the project. As they investigated printing costs, it became clear that the best option initially was to self-publish a small run and see how that went, and the best way to do that with some security was to offer the book as a reward through a crowdfunding platform, and so they ran a kickstarter campaign through August 2021 and secured 125% funding for an initial run of 150 books, which arrived at the start of October.Philip and Ian will have stalls at the Christmas Fairs in Middlewich (Willowmere and the Civic) on Saturday 4th December, and Holmes Chapel and Northwich on Sunday 5th December, where they will be happy to chat and personalise a copy of Finlay’s Rocket for you. If you would like a copy, but can’t make it to any of those events, you can visit their website where you can shop, find out about (and book) workshops, and keep up to date on upcoming projects by visiting their website, www.hillstartpublishing.comKatyGo Local meets...

10My Name is Beth Walker, I’m 19 Years old, I live in Barnton, Northwich. All my life I have loved the idea of being able to give back to others that needed it most, but when I was younger it wasn’t something I realise the impact off until I grew of an age that understood the impact I could have of created if I pursued this. At the age of 15 I lost my best friend, my guardian angel, and one of the most beautiful people in my life, My Nana Jean to cancer. At the age I was during this, I truly couldn’t understand why this would happen to someone as kind as my Nanna. Day after day I would ask this question, and as I grew a little older and could grasp a better understanding, I began to realise that, how I felt when I lost my beautiful Nanna Jean, happens day after day to so many incredibly kind and beautiful souls that do not deserve that. That was where my passion began, by supporting and fundraising for The Christie Charitable Fund. Not long after beginning my new job at Coulby Conduct and getting to know the team, they were truly intrigued by all of the things I had done over the past few years as fundraising for The Christie Charitable Fund. They we’re so supportive, understood my passion recognised the importance of it and instantly wanted to support me in every way possible. My Goal is to reach an incredible £10,000 for The Christie by the end of this year, which I am pleased to say I am well on my way to. I have recently hosting my annual charity ball which raised just under £1500! I also want to highlight the work my colleagues are doing to support my fundraising, Coulby Conduct Estate Agents will be donating £10 for every house completion! This is absolutely amazing and I couldn’t be more grateful to have a phenomenal company not only support me inside work, but support me outside too! So please do think of them if your are thinking to selling your home.Beth WalkerColby ConductCommunity matters...Eleri Booth we wish you all the luck in the world as you leave Waters Edge. 18Business news...In the last edition I looked at networking and shared some tips on how to get the best out of building your network to start and grow your business. In this edition I want to talk about start-ups. There has been a significant increase in new start-ups joining the FSB over the past 6 months. Unfortunately, a staggering 80% businesses will fail in the first 2 years, here are some reasons why and tips on how to try and limit it from happening to you.Starting out in business, can be a very scary and lonely place. Do not feel you are alone. Please reach out, the FSB has offers support and advice as well all the documents you will need going forward.Darren GallimoreThe Federation of Small Businessesfsb.org.uk1. Lack of cashCash is king. Plan a method to make it easy to get paid promptly Then be careful not to extend yourself beyond your cash limits.2.Lack of clear vision and uniquenessYou must be clear on what makes better than your competitors, ensure you know how you will add value to anybody working with you.3. No planPlan what you will achieve in the next 12 months, set some concrete goals and metrics that you can measure your success by.4. Relying heavily on one or two big customersDo not get complacent if you land one or two big accounts always market yourself and try to cultivate a diverse customer base in case your big customers suddenly disappear.5. No marketing platformYou need a clear marketing plan so research into which marketing platforms will be the most beneficial to you, but do not over extend yourself by doing everything at once.6. No performance informationEven if you feel your business is too small I’d suggest ALL businesses should look at performance data. Go back to your business plan, and see what key indicators will you use to measure your progress towards your goals? Define them and then measure them regularly.7. Not acting on market informationDo not fall in the trap of assuming you know what your customers want and not listening to what they are actually saying. Regularly conduct market research with your customers and make a plan to act on the information you get.8. Poor managementLeadership starts at the top. I see business owners who cannot let go of the day to day minutiae of running their business. Delegate. Build a team you can trust and delegate anything someone else can do so you can focus on working on your business.9.No data security backupImagine loosing all the data regarding your business and customer base. Do not assume it could not happen to you, cyber attacks are on the increase. Make sure you have a data security plan in place and regularly back up your data.

22The question ‘is estate planning a worthwhile exercise?’ is a bit like asking whether it is a good idea to use a map or satellite navigation to get to a destination you have not been to before. As with almost every aspect of life it is better to plan as normally planning saves you time or money or both. Ask yourself...If you aren’t sure if estate planning is a worthwhile exercise, ask yourself some questions:• Do I want the best for my family?• Do I want my family and friends and any charities receiving legacies to receive as much as possible from my estate?• Do I want my estate to pay the minimum required in inheritance tax to the government? If you answer ‘yes’ to each question then estate planning is likely to be a worthwhile exercise for you, depending on the potential value and complexity of your estate. How do you estate plan? You don’t necessarily have to make a new Will to estate plan but a private client solicitor will need to look at any Will and consider it and your current personal and financial circumstances. For example, your Will may be fit for purpose but if your estate is likely to be subject to inheritance tax you may be advised about the option of lifetime gifting or placing assets, such as shares in a family business, in a lifetime trust. If you have a Will, your solicitor can check that you are making best use of spouse tax exemptions or of gifts to charity in your Will or look at whether insurance monies or pensions will pass under your Will.Estate planning isn’t just for the mega wealthy...Some people think estate planning is the preserve of the landed gentry or lottery winners. That certainly isn’t the case as it is normally the average family that finds itself paying inheritance tax on the death of a loved one. With estate planning potentially more of the estate could pass to family who could really benefit from a legacy to buy a house or renovate their existing one. Alternatively, more of the estate could have been left to a charity of the Will maker’s choosing. Evolve Family LawLet’s talk legal...

38Photos. Who’s not intrigued by seeing misty and mysterious ‘black-and-whites? Familiar places, but unfamiliar times. Nostalgic interest is strong, as social media regularly proves. So, what do old prints of Middlewich Past reveal? And how did the fashion for photography develop?Although it was mid-19th century when this novel science got going, not until the 1890’s did images become plentiful. We’re lucky that Edwardian Middlewich (early 1900’s) is surprisingly viewable. Parades were huge occasions - such as summer 1904 when Middlewich held its Rose Queen Festival. On this July day the camera captured a Wheelock Street thronged with white-frocked ‘lady dancers’. Onlookers packed out the pavements where many shop windows, typically, were shaded with large awnings. Neighbouring Queen Street’s terraces joined in with floral festoons… impressive. But the lane then was still so narrow that just twelve souls could stand abreast - most of them being children! Shrewdly, photographs of these joyous celebrations were made into postcards which could be purchased as a keepsake. Picture postcards were also very much for handwritten correspondence – and arrived with their text-like messages usually the same or following day! In November 1934 the unveiling of the Bullring’s War Memorial was a major, certainly more sombre, event. Photos show unbelievable numbers of people filling the town’s streets, including 7th Battalion Cheshire Regiment soldiers, Territorials, bandsmen, all kinds of civic officials, clergy, and members of the public. Hightown had been redeveloped to create this lasting monument. The pictures are perfect proof. Most photographed spots in Middlewich? Hightown, Wheelock Street shops, and quite often its commercial hotel the White Bear, the Council School, and local grand houses. The town’s industrial importance was also dutifully recorded for posterity, depicting railway, canals and salt, especially Murgatroyd’s in Brooks Lane, and Seddons. Conversely though it’s often ordinary citizens and lifestyles that are most compelling. Keen observers will spot styles in clothes and cars to help to fix date ranges, although sometimes controversially. The featured photo references local Motor Engineer Frank Cliffe, whose proudly painted haulage vehicle looked ready to tackle any load. In 1939 he was operating from Nantwich Road, telephone number 84. Thanking Marjorie Pace for this family photo. For a dozen or so glimpses of Middlewich in 1950, visit the website of the (enormous) Francis Frith Collection. Like any town, Middlewich’s archive is probably scattered amongst personal collections. Yet when combined it is a part of heritage worth preserving. Ongoing photographic exhibitions can only get more interesting as they expand. 42Middlewich High School... After a well-earned Half Term break our students and staff have come back refreshed and energised. We started the term off by encouraging everyone to take part in the Samaritans challenge of Jog 30k in the month of November. By doing this it helped us to raise awareness of the Samaritans and how they can offer support and guidance on ways to support our emotional health and wellbeing. It was also a great opportunity to allow us to look at the positive impact physical health has on our mental health. Wellbeing Wednesday activities have been launched at MHS this year and we have been taking part in activities throughout the term. Students have been keen to contribute to our sessions; our most recent session was a Mindfulness listening activity recorded by a very talented Year 10 Mental Health Ambassador student, Clayton Parker playing “On the road again” on his ukelele. We have also achieved The AcSEED Award 2021, this is a quality assurance mark presented to schools that have made a substantial effort to support the mental health of their students. It encourages and rewards the provision of high-quality emotional wellbeing services, from the broad provision of information right through to appropriately targeted intervention. Based on best practices, the scheme defines a set of standard criteria that all schools must meet in order to receive the award. The presentation took place with our Mental Health Lead Mrs Brown and our Mental Health Student Ambassadors.Extra-Curricular activities have been in full flow and the success of our Football Teams and our Cross-country teams have been amazing. It has been lovely to see the students taking part and enjoying themselves and most of all having fun in their teams.Fridays have most certainly been the highlight of my week, I have been able to host my “Hot Choc with the Head”Over the last term I have had over 100 students join me who have been recognised for their contribution to school in different ways.We have launched the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme this term for our Year 10 students and we are very excited to be working with 18 students that have decided to start working towards their Bronze Award. The application window may have closed for students looking to join us in September 2022 but it is never too early to look ahead. We would be delighted to invite current Year 5 families to come and have a look at our school and see what we have to offer. 44This year’s Bonfi re Night was a fantastic success. As ever a lot of pre-planning and hard work ensured that we had done as much as possible to make it run smoothly. The usual avenues of publicity were followed, but this year we entered into dialogue with Go Local to take out a front cover spread to advertise the event in association with the most widely distributed publication in the town. We believe this paid off handsomely and awareness quickly grew that the event was back on after a year’s absence. For the fi rst time we were offering pre-paid online tickets and sales soon started to grow, ultimately exceeding our wildest expectations. Furthermore, we were offering cash and card payments on the night and the response was phenomenal. People started arriving early and continued in droves. The process of checking in pre-paid tickets caused us some headaches before and during the evening, but we sincerely hope people were not too disappointed to queue on the night - our apologies go out for this and it is an issue we need to review ahead of next year. The weather certainly threatened briefl y but other than the gusty wind playing havoc with the bonfi re it didn’t spoil the event. The fi reworks were truly awesome and we thank Fantazia for such a magnifi cently orchestrated display. It was the best anyone from the cricket club could recall. The external catering vendors were kept very busy with an excellent and varied choice of food and drink. The fi rst Bonfi re Night organised by the cricket club was in the late 1970’s. It was intended as a fund raising event to support junior cricket at the club and to see the club through the winter period where very little income can be generated. It was a homespun affair, buying and setting off the fi reworks by players and volunteers. The event was repeated and became an annual fi xture, becoming ever popular with the local community. The success and growth through the early 1990’s led to the realisation that the fi reworks display required the involvement of a professional organisation. For many years we have engaged Fantazia Fireworks and their displays are always fi rst class. This has proven to be a very wise decision. We always, however, build the bonfi re ourselves on the day via our members and volunteers. The bonfi re monies get us through the winter period - it remains our last source of income until the new cricket season gets under way each April. The lockdown periods have been exceedingly tough and without grants from local government we would have found it extremely diffi cult to survive. Our Treasurer, Steve Gill, has skilfully guided us through those tricky months and we are confi dently looking forward to the next season. This year’s successful bonfi re has underpinned that to a very large extent. As a committee we are in the process of updating our development plan for the next fi ve years. We would dearly love to refurbish and modernise the clubhouse which is now showing it’s age. Piecemeal repair and maintenance in line with our limited funds keep it functional, but recurring costs are always having to be met just to stand still. The ground is in very good shape and we must maintain that constantly. Furthermore we are always looking to support all our cricket teams. The junior section is a phenomenal success under the expert watch and extreme hard work of Junior Coordinator Richard Clorley, but we cannot be complacent and must continue to invest in support of our current and future youngsters. We are also wanting to support girls and ladies cricket with some clear successes already last season. The senior teams also will be supported as far as possible to start rising up the league structures after several disappointing seasons.Middlewich Cricket ClubBonfire at the Cricket Club...

46In 1960, at the age of eight I was, for a very short time, a member of the Church Choir at St Michael’s Church. As Christmas drew near it was decreed that members of the choir should walk all around the town singing carols.I don’t recall there being any other motive behind this festive goodwill gesture - collecting for charity may have been involved but I was only eight at the time and wouldn’t have been interested even if someone had told me.We wandered around what was at that time still a smoky little industrial town singing festive songs to anyone who would listen and eventually, after making our way along Nantwich Road , found ourselves at Manor Lodge, where we dispensed more carols in return for mince pies and Tizer. Our ultimate destination lay at the far end of the carriage drive at the Manor itself, at that time the home of Mr E.K. Willing-Denton and family. You can still make the same journey today but the difference is that, once you get a short distance along it, the carriage drive turns into Kerridge Close and then Greendale Drive. Both these modern interlopers are built (more or less) on the alignment of the old drive. In 1960 it was carriage-drive all the way to the Manor. In my mind’s eye I can still see us making that journey all those years ago, dressed in traditional Victorian costume and carrying those candle lamps on sticks through the snows of December. But there, of course, my mind’s eye is playing tricks on me, as it always does. We weren’t in Victorian costume (nor even dressed as choirboys - it would have been a bit cold), we didn’t have any lamps, candle or otherwise, and, I don’t think it was snowing either. We made our way through this then rural part of the town, passing through what children now call ‘Mystery Wood’ and along the tree-lined drive to the Manor itself. There we were met by the Willing-Dentons who plied us with more festive fare. More mince pies, and more Tizer with, no doubt, cups of tea for the senior members of the choir, if not something a little stronger.Just a little idle memory, but it still haunts me every time I walk past Manor Lodge, particularly at this time of the year.Dave RobertsMiddlewich Memories
